PS Vita Found On Sony's E3 Site, Now Removed

2. The success of the Wii doesn't make this an automatic home run. Nonsense words are not a guarantee of success(lol, Zune).
Vita is not a made up nonsense word like Zune or Wii. Although I'm not sure if it works for or against it. Plenty of popular brands are named using made up words.

Seriously? A thousand plus posts about the name of the thing?

Who really cares what it is called?

Playstation and Wii could very well be the two dumbest names in product history but it didn't stop them from doing well.
Even though you've been registered long enough to be here for it, you must not remember the "Revolution = Wii" name unveiling thread.

Hell the Gamecube was nearly named Starcube until NOA begged & pleaded in the 11th hour

It's dumb and not because it sounds dumb (though the haters are still primarily kneejerkers and probably didn't actually think it through). Basically, "vita" gives certain images primarily: vitality, energy and health. That's what's dumb about this. If Wii had been called vita there wouldn't be a problem because it would fit the image of active energetic play-styles and health (Wii-fit, Vitality sensor etc). NGP doesn't do that. It's identity seems more like it's just a powerful console-like handheld. Maybe they might make a case if that is indeed the name at E3 but unless this thing has a shake-weight and pedometer attached to it I really have no idea what they would be going for.

Also, no way NGP would never have ever worked as anything other than a code-name. It would date itself as soon as it's released and acronyms without meaning only work if it's already well-established and never referred to in full (YMCA, IGN etc.)

I think we should wait to see how Sony positions andmarkets it before we start saying the name doesn't fit. Remember they included 3g in one mode for reason (and some are saying it wont be fore multiplayer) I think they might play-up that "Near" functionality and the Live area. There has to be reason why the marketing execs chose this name and not any other. Sony may position way differently than the PSP2, thus they chose not use the "PSP2" moniker.

They will push the social networking more than the games, that's the angle on 'Vita' right there. Expect 25 minutes of Facebook and Twitter and text-chat.

if sony wants to expand past the gaming demograph and into techie/hipster/women/ipad/android/etc territory, it serves them well to give it a catchy name like "vita" rather than simply attaching a number like it were a sequel ("PSP2")

im thinking this is what the marketing team was figuring:

vita = life

you use PS Vita everyday of your life

thus it becomes part of your everyday life?

ipso facto? that kinda of reasoning
im just talking outta my ass but that might not be too farfetched sony marketing came up with that

Even then I don't see the "vitality." The decision to not go PSP2 likely would likely be because PSP had a bit of stigma in non-Japan countries and they want something new. That's fair, but call it the Playstation Freedom or something. Something that represents what the system is. Goofy can be catchy, but it needs some symbology to back it up. They better not think of just dropping this without explanation.

Well actually vita doesn't mean only life.

It's a part of the body too.

This, but I ignore how it's called in English.

...Okay, I'm gonna disappear. xD

wow, i love it!

it just gives me lots of energy and helps with my menses! i recommend vita to everyone. strong enough for a man, but made for a woman.

but with psp-level battery life it will forever be hooked up to life support

that's no life i want my portable electronics to live

NGP sounds like a Nintendo console anyway. PSV is alright, but spelling it out sounds awkward. I hope they find something catchier or just stick with PSP2.

EVERYONE will call it the PSV, if it really is "Vita". That's why the name is dumb.

I mean if that's what happens, so be it, but why even brand the thing.

Wii was a symbolic word. The idea was that it was international, could be spoken easily in a number of languages (not "ekkusu bokkusu"). In English it connotates the English pronoun. "Wii would like to play." Not accidental. Also note the two i's representing people that bow at the end of every commercial. It had meaning and it represented what the console embodied.

Vita = life if you expect people to know Latin or speak a Romance language. Otherwise it's what you see on an energy drink, short for "vitality" or "vitamins" which while of the same root don't connotate the same way. Do you believe they named it for Europeans first? Or are they being avant-gaurde using Latin for product names?

I don't see why anyone would call it the PSV over the Vita.

I think it's a good distinctive name, and I believe it's wise of Sony to start giving their products proper names rather than just version numbers. However there are clearly problems with the word Vita if the 1000 posts in this thread mostly arguing over how to say it are anything to go by.

This'll be fun to say in Japanese.

VWEETA

it'd either be "beeta" (ビーター) or "buita" (ヴィーター)

Except, oddly enough, Japanese. Japan has no "Wi" letter or sound in their alphabet.

no native, modern words use a "wi" phoneme, but it's easy enough for japanese people to pronounce as ウィ. almost the same sound, just no rounding of the lips.

anything with V is an entirely different matter, though obviously it only sounds strange to foreigners and not japanese people themselves - they don't know or particularly care that we don't pronounce "DVD" like "dee bu-ee dee", unless they're speaking in english, so i'm sure they wouldn't be bothered about how other countries say "vita".

in much the same way that we don't care about accurately pronouncing a latin word with the original v sound, actually.

Vita is hardly an outlandish name compared to "Wii" back in 2005/2006. Does no one remember the insane backlash over that preposterous name? It's easily become a household word since.
Wii is still a stupid name. PS Vita sounds like a homeopathic suppository. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, but it doesn't sound all that gamey to my ear.

I think that's the point. They want to make Vita into some kind of lifestyle choice, a lot like the Wii actually.

Out of curiosity, is SCEA teasing NGP @ E3 as much as SCEE appears to be?

All I've seen on GAF over the last few days have been teaser ads for it from SCEE. First time I've seen them advertise their E3 presence like that.

Can you screen cap those ads if you happen to see them again? I've never seen one for some reason

not that i like Vita very much, but i must admit that after initial shock, it is starting to sound 'familiar', like happened with wii years ago. So in the long term the name , if it ends being this one, won't be an issue any more.

May be because their us marketing head left, and Andrew House is covering for all.

I think it's probably targeting euros cos it's a SCEE campaign. Or maybe just me. Preaching to the choir! ;)

It doesn't really say much, just an animation with 'The Next Generation Portable, A Gaming Revolution is Coming' and then the bit in the screencap with a link to their youtube page.

Maybe SCEE is pushing it because it's going to come out in Europe this year, omg, secret unlocked /wishful
