PS Vita general advice thread, part 3 | Veni, vidi, Vita

If I may be allowed to pose a technical question here:

Does anyone here know what is the memory footprint of the OS on Vita and an external link to confirm the claim?

Also, can it be shrunk like the PS3 OS footprint via firmware updates?

Looking at Journey, I must say it doesn't look technically taxing enough not to be ported to Vita with ease. It's a game that should be experienced by as many people as possible.

Sony should be able to optimize for space and time to accommodate more features. The apps can request for more/less memory on the fly. Shuhei mentioned that the web browser behaves this way right now.

And like Rayman, the OLED screen might even make it look better in some ways. I am really hoping they port this, but I do not have my hopes up.

Gravity Daze feels so good.

Exploring is awesome. When I thought I got all the collecting things, I find even more when I turn the world upside down.

Also, aced my first couple challenges when I got the hang of them. Speed challenges are a bit harder though.

That's not only for the game's sake.

Vita is in trouble and Sony should realize that it needs everything they can throw at it. Especially, something like Journey on PS3 is way cool, but won't change anything now, but the same thing also on Vita is a lot bigger, cause that's something you don't have on 3ds and that's the type of little touch that defines a portable.

Anyway i made some useless photos with my fav hobby right now, to see what something would look on Vita :p

It's hard to take a good photo of the vita to show off the colors and density, but you get my point :

Used some screens from the dif emus thread on gaf.
Lots of April Fool material ;)

So I took my vita on the drive to the gym thinking I could get some new locations in near. Was I supposed to do a scan there as well? The 3G didn't connect for some reason

What game is in the second photo? I haven't played that one.

Legend of oasis. I put it cause it's pretty pixel art.

The perfect kind of forgotten game that probably sold 30-40k on saturn when it was released and would be a wonderful fresh port on Vita! And there are so many games that would feel fresh in this generation.

I got the official PS Vita earphones today and they sound a lot better than their pricetag would suggest. Very clear and surprisingly deep bass. Right now the treble can sound a bit harsh at times, but I have only been using them for a short time.

This is coming from someone using Etymotic ER-4's on a daily basis, I also own a Sony MDR-888 (with paper filters and silent caps removed) and full size AKG headphones. These sound better than what I remember the EX-71's sounding like.

At this price you won't be disappointed even if you are used to good audio quality. Make sure you use the right size sleeves, because when you don't get a good seal they will sound very thin an harsh.

I'm looking forward to finding out if some burn-in time will do anything to the sound.

I'm hoping the Sony DRXB22IP's turn out that nice. I'm looking for items that can double duty on the iPad when buying Vita accessories, and the DRXB22IP has both the cord mic from the Vita earphones as well as the Apple remote.

how much was the Vita earphone?

20 Euro, I suppose it is twenty dollar in the US?

Are you sure these work with the Vita as well? Looking at the specs they have 9mm drivers vs 10mm on the Vita ones, but 5 to 23000 Hz vs 20 to 20000 Hz (which sounds like a made up range anyway), and 103 dB vs 99dB sensitivity. From those specs they should sound nicely detailed, maybe slightly less deep bass going by the size of the driver, though the frequency range suggests otherwise.

Yep, 20 Obamabucks.

I just ordered them a minute ago after reading your post. I have read many good things about them even from people who desire good sound from headphones. They will be way better than any pair of earbuds I've ever owned, so I'm not going to worry sound quality anymore.

They are completely plastic BTW even though they look convincingly like metal. The music of Motorstorm RC and Montezuma sounds really nice on them, some killer bass there.

I used the smallest sleeves at first, didn't get a good seal and was surprised at how amazingly horrible they sounded, I couldn't believe it after reading the positive reviews. Then I put the medium ones on and it was a world of difference. They have some quite powerful bass, maybe too much for audiophiles, but this works nicely for games (and also for movies I imagine).

Guys how is MLB the Show? I wanted to try out a baseball game and havent played one in years, I have seen favorable reviews, but wanted to see some user feedback...

I was going to go out to the store and bu this today until i realized the Canadian version has Jose Bautista on the cover so now Im going to try and score a copy of that one (Favortie team is the blue jays)

I, um...well not now I'm not.

I'm clueless about the 9/10mm thing, they won't work why?

And I don't want much bass either. This is mostly for movies, many of them being very old and having a lot of dialog that you have to strain to hear at times (no subs). I picked those as a stab in the dark because of good reviews, the mic, and remote. Do you know of any out there that would be better suited?

One thing, my sources are all DVD, so no uncompressed audio.

Those are some nice April Fool's pix (esp. SotC)

Personally, I don't think Sony are in trouble with Vita yet, esp. as they are still selling PSP alongside. A full transition will phase out the PSP out PSP development as more and more devs finally get their hands on $99 Vita SDKs. It'll take time and a price drop during Christmas will aid the sales. If not the price of the console itself is dropped then we should at least expect price cutting for memory sticks.

Personally, I don't know if bringing in $0.99 games will benefit the platform. Like PS minis there may be way more crap than cream of crop. One thing (I don't know if it's done already) Sony could do is drop the charge for patching games and shorten the turn around time.

I am sure that the future of Vita will be better than the fate handed to PSP. However, shifting paradigms of mobile gaming means both developers and Sony would need to diversify their gaming portfolio to succeed.

Should I buy Tactics Ogre? Everything I've read about it has made it sound complex as fuck. How much of a learning curve is there? How difficult is it when compared to something like Advance Wars?

It gets as complex as you want it to be.

Take advance wars, add in a whole bunch of unit types and each of them is an rpg character. You don't have to micromanage their stats that much to have fun.

Get it fo sho.

People in the TO thread complained that archers were too overpowered so anyone wanting to enjoy the game should not use them. I had one archer and the battles were hard as shit. I should not have taken that advice.

I will go back to the game soon though.

I, um...well not now I'm not.

I was just going by someone else's comment earlier that his Vita earphones didn't work with his phone and not seeing a reference to the Vita on that Amazon product page. Maybe the other way around works without problems.

Like Wazzim said I was talking about the size of the speakers, generally larger speakers have deeper bass (lower frequencies), but this doesn't always have to be the case.

I'm not sure yet if the powerful bass is coming from the music of those games or if the earphones themselves are emphasizing the bass frequencies. The sound of speakers often changes during the first period of use as well. The Vita earphones are very clear sounding, so understanding dialog should be no problem. The ones you ordered should be fine, with their high sensitivity they should give good volume as well.

Should be okay, generally Sony headphones are clear sounding, Sennheisers can be a bit veiled sounding.

If you're never played a Japanese SRPG before, TO will be pretty mind boggling to begin with. As you're not just learning the game, but the genre too. The basics are pretty straight forward, but all the classes, customisation, levelling and equipping takes a fair bit of learning. The games does have an in-game tutorial/manual that explains everything, which I used extensively for the first few hours.

If you've previously played Final Fantasy Tactics and the like, there is still enough unique stuff in TO for it to take a few hours to sink in.

TO is one of my favourites game this gen, so I would absolutely recommend it. If you click with it, you'll be engrossed for dozens of hours. If you don't like it, well, it was worth a try.

I love using archers in Tactics, but then Calculators or whatever they were called just destroyed everything if you could get their casting speed sped up a bit.

Has anyone confirmed whether this actually works or not? If I'm using a EU account but wanted to play PSP games purchased on my American account is this method valid?

i've done it.

I have a EU vita

I loggued first on my US account

I used the method to go on my japan account

The only real problem is that you have to re enter your WPA-WEP key each time you "reset"

But your US stuff was playable on your JP account or vice versa?

Edit: Well I just tried it and it didn't work for me with the PSP game I tried. That sucks.

I think it only works for some demos and free stuff and not anything you have to pay for because that requires the account it was purchased on?

There's a what now? Bloody hell, was wondering why none these games are receiving any patches past 1.01. It's not a crazy amount is it? Is that for all sony games?

Looks like it's not just sony and apparently ... http://www.psu.com/forums/showthrea...e-cost-of-patching-a-game-on-XBL-and-PSN-Ouch

..it costs $40, 000. -.- At least we can expect significant or crucial fixes in the patches that do come.

Do you think they will stay in well when running? Looking for a new pair, myself. These ear clip-ons I have are terrible for staying in. I think they're Sony too, actually.

Bought the Little King's Story Vita yesterday but I won't open it until I finish KH3D. Don't want to add stuff to my backlog. Also, preordered Persona 4, too bad June 14th is so far away.

The only games I'm mega hyped for right now are LittleBigPlanet and Gravity Rush. I hope Sony announces some real badassery at E3 for this thing. In the mean time I can grind away at Wipeout's elite passes.

Also the clip in my official Vita "Case" broke, so I bought a new one, and picked this one, with space for game carts:
