PS1 games with widescreen? What?

So I bought Tomb Raider II from PSN just on principle of loving Anniversary, and being told that TRII is supposedly awesome, but this thread isn't about TRII, or at least, not the game proper.

When I loaded it up, and it got to the loading splash screen, I noticed that Lara and the logo looked very... squished....

So I went into the PS button options, and tried widescreen, and voila!

(For comparison. Seems the original logo's proportions don't really match up 1:1 to either :/)

I didn't know what to think. Since when had PS1 games supported widescreen? I further tested to see if it was just me being weird.

Nope. Game looks awkward w/o widescreen as well.

Doing a quick google on "PS1 widescreen games list" and its variants brings up very few results, with a few people listing things out, alongside other undetailed features like dolby surround, but no solid wiki-esque list.

It seems to trigger automatically, though, unlike PS2 games, so I'm not sure what to think about this. :S Did you guys know that some PS1 games had widescreen?

Not PSX, but there were several Saturn games that supported 16:9, such as Panzer Dragoon Zwei (and I think the first one too?). I was very surprised when I decided to do a quick replay earlier this year.

Perfect Dark is one of the few N64 games I can remember that had 16:9

the N64 has a handful of widescreen games as well, no 480p though (to the poster above).

The N64's Multiav out cap's out at S-Video (RGB in PAL consoles) which is 480i.

The expansion pack let games run at 640x480 but it's still an interlaced output.

I'm pretty sure both Majora's Mask and Perfect Dark 64 can display in 480p.

No, the N64 was completely incapable of displaying a progressive signal at all. Games were rendered by 320x240, with a small amount being able to do 640x480 (480i) thanks to use of the expansion pack. Games also only used 16-bit colour.

If you're referencing to N64 VC releases on the Wii, all N64 games display at proper 480p, with an additional bump to 24-bit colour.

Wipeout 3 and Wipeout 3: SE, both have a widescreen option in the game. I often play this game in 720p through an emulator, with lots of AA, looks great and the aspect ration is correct :D

Usually, I just look for circles in the picture to see if the footage is supposed to be in widescreen or not.

In this case, the (X) button seemed a bit sqished in the original image, but looks more circular in the widescreen mode.

Nights did too!

Why her hair longer in widescreen than the top one (non widescreen)
:lol :lol

Honestly, I think clipping is the cause. I'd have to load the game again to check, though :lol

GUIs are never a good place to start to check whether or not something's "supposed" to be widescreen or not. That's the least reliable way to check for widescreen.

edit: oops, meant to edit the other post :S

I'm glad I'm not the only one that does that when typing fast. I still have figured out why though :lol Guess it's just muscle memory from so many words that end in ion?

I've always thought Tomb Raider II looked a bit off, even when I bought the game way back when it first came out. I thought it was just one of the quirks of being a Western game, to make her look thinner or something.

Just saw the mistake now, to my defence I wrote it before my first coffee. Anything i do before my first cup of coffee in the morning, I do not stand responsible for :lol

No, there were some games that supported 16/9 for PSX.

As for OP.

I noticed this in japanese psx games I downloaded from psn as soon they've shown on hk store.
I thought that maybe they "fixed" it for 16/9 but it could be a resolution output thing.

Could be a compromise thing.

none of these older games support 16x9 natively. there was no concept of a 16x9 signal back when they were made (over rf, composite or super-video cables). even 480p isn't a widescreen format by definition. the game can render with an aspect ratio that makes a 4:3 screen look correct when stretched to 16x9 at 480p (like god of war 1 and 2) but it's still only rendering a 4:3 screen worth of pixels.

i've noticed some games don't look bad when stretched out even though they weren't intended to be. i played through metroid prime 2 stretched to widescreen and it looked pretty normal. that's probably the case with these games.

Does MGS1 supports 16:9? I cant find my copy so I can't check it out by myself :/

What? Then why some games had 16:9 modes? Like Psygnosis Formula One from 1996.

Disgusting.

Worms Armageddon supported 16:9 too, and you were able to see more more space. I plated it at 16:9 even if my TV was 4:3.

Just saved me some trouble :P I remember the Dreamcast one supporting 16:9 and was gonna check

no, it doesn't. On a related note, Twin Snakes supports progressive scan, but doesn't support widescreen.

I agree, disgusting :P

So I went into the PS button options, and tried widescreen, and voila!

That's the PS3's emulation doing the scaling you toolbox, not the game supporting 16:9

And yes you can do that on all PS1 games on the PS3 and PSP

Sony even promoted a widescreen crt for use with the playstation here in Sweden.

cant find any pictures of it, but it was like 15-16" i think..

You're definitely wrong.

I remember Goldeneye having a specific "16:9" option in the menus. Other games listed in this thread (PD, NiGHTS, etc.) also definitely had menu options for widescreen in-game.

EDIT: Well, actually, I think I see what you were saying now. It's still the same amount of pixels, just with a bigger field of view and proper aspect ratio.

Did you just totally ignore all those pics or what?

um, he's right. I have FFVII and FFT from psn and you can choose widescreen from the PS button menu. That option was not available on the original releases.

Are you sure it's widescreen? I dunno, it looks stretched to me. I think the abnormally thin-with-huge-tits Lara is as intended.

The X button is correct in the higher picture, you're just stretching it and she's thin.

yeah i agree
