PS2 Classics on PS4 already looking incredibly thin on the ground?

From the outset it looked like a weird move. Only a select amount of titles, no transfer from PS3, and crazy pricing whichever way you sliced it (and I suppose if you're a daydream believer, no disc support)

It's been a few months since they launched, and the service has been updated at a snail's pace. I've been vocal in the past about how Sony puts really low effort into its Classics range, particularly in some regions. If you look at the total amount of PS1/PS2 Classics released over the PS3's lifetime in Europe for example, it's actually quite embarrassing.

The problem also seems to stem from the fact that a LOT of high-ranking PS2 games already have a HD remaster on PS3, which would;

1) Be more effort to port
2) Make an inferior "upscale" New Classic seem out of place

I guess I just find it weird Sony bothered in the first place if they were again going to massively not bother. Any excuse to charge 4x as much for GTA as they do on iOS perhaps.

I get to play Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 again on my PS4. I am not going to complain.

Outside of that, don't we already have like 15-17 games? Is that really that slow of a release schedule?

I know what you mean. Like, what happened to KOF2000? They announced it months ago and there's been nothing since.

I had like 12-13 titles on my list that I wanted, and 7 of them have already been on there, so I guess I've just been lucky.

But yeah, I did expect atleast one or two per week.

They are probably being smart about it. Drip feed games, give them time to breathe and sell some numbers rather than dump 50 games at a time. Not sure why there is a problem with price when work is being put in and they are full games. Just wait for the right price if you have to as there will be constant sales.

They have trophy support.
That alone makes the port a little hard than just run on PS4.

They can spend the time they need to make a quality port.

The titles they've been putting out have hit a sweet spot of things I'd like to go back and play, so I'm fine with it. There are already more PS2 RPGS on there than I have time to play.

I got to play Rogue Galaxy on my ps4. I dont really have anything to complain about, adding trophies and doing q/a takes some time i hear. its only been like 2months since ps2 b/c started and weve got 15games soooo

I've always been curious how much money these "classics" make Sony. It's always felt like them throwing us enthusiasts a bone. Outside of the Final Fantasies and GTAs, I can't imagine a Dark Cloud or Legend Of Dragoon selling a lot.

They likely have a lot of titles in progress and close to ready, but will be announced as pre-order bonuses or a play it until the new one comes out. I could see that happening for games like Kingdom Hearts, when we get a release date I fully expect to see PS2 on PS4 games as part of the trailer.

They need to get on this ASAP, get more people on the Persona 5 bandwagon.

Persona would be another good one.

According to the Developers, it takes about 2-3 months to implement trophies for one game.

@shadowtabako Deciding what the trophies should be takes 1-2 weeks (plus extra time to get them approved). Programming is about a month.

@shadowtabako Testing them after programming can take another 1-2 months depending on how long the game is!
Have patience.

They're going at a good clip if you ask me, 1 every couple weeks is pretty reasonable. We've also gotten a good idea of upcoming games thanks to ESRB.

Also I know people have a problem with it not being cross buy with PS3 but I will say that I've bought a lot of PS3 classics for barely more than a dollar so I can understand where that's coming from. And Rogue Galaxy and Dark Cloud 2 are worth way more than $15 imo.

Snail's pace? Seriously? How many old games do you want released a week?

Have you been in a Virtual Console thread?

Anyway they add trophies to these games, for one thing, which is not an insignificant bit of work with old games

I mean, it's been less than two months and I already have these in my collection:

  • GTA3
  • Vice City
  • San Andreas
  • PaRappa The Rapper 2
  • Twisted Metal Black

I think they've done a decent job so far. I kind of like the one-a-week approach over wait a month and get 3-4, but I certainly wouldn't object to a big dump of PS2 classics at some point. I love the performance, resolution, and AA gains, not to mention trophies and shareplay.

It sucks to see the process slowed down and made more expensive by a feature I actively ignore by turning it off. But oh well. Hopefully in the long run we'll still see a lot of games on the service.

My hope is for at least 2 classics a month but realistically we will probably only get one a month. Unless they increase the size of the team working on them.

Wait I just checked there have been 16 games in 2 months, that sounds like a good amount if you ask me.

To be fair a good number of people will buy these games because of the trophy support, plus there isn't really a downside to adding them. And it's not like they're just putting up the games the exact moment they're ready.

I think they've been keeping a great pace. Dark Chronicle isn't even two weeks old, and I doubt many have completed that yet anyway.

Still, the sooner we have the Ape Escape games, the better.

Takes time have to up the res make sure the music is licensed properly. Add trophy support. Debug so the trophys don't make the old games bug out.

I'm just waiting for those SMT raidou games to come out so I can finally finish them. Everything else, eh, I have too much of a backlog to replay old games.

It started ~1 month ago. Maybe wait a bit?
And Sony can't bring every game they want to the PS4. 1st party? Yes! 3rd party? Not if the publisher doesn't want to.

So just wait and see what's coming. This isn't a No.1 priority feature with a 200 men team behind it. The games are coming.
(But it's not like 20 games a month....)

I mean, I got the three big GTAs from the PS2 era for ~$17 in total. That hardly felt like scam pricing to me, but to each their own.

They seem to be figuring out their market for the PS2 catalog over the past seven/eight weeks. A lot of them now launch with a PS+ discount that drops the price to $7/12. Seems fair enough to me.

I wish I could get the old NHL 2K games along with NHL hitz...but the licence expired so there's no way now.

I'm fine with the pace though I really want an upgraded GODHAND; still, the stuff they've released thus far I can't complain.
