PS2 Karaoke games - Singstar? Karaoke Revolution?

I'm in the market for one (1) of these games. What are the pros and cons of the two series and which of them should I get?

Also, can I use the Xbox 360 Rock Band USB mic?

Get Singstar.

I'd recommend Singstar 90's or Singstar Legends. Some amazing tracks on there. Legends has got Rocketman, Life on Mars, Reet Petite, Ring of Fire.... great, great songs.

If you have an eyetoy try revolution. You can make some funky looking avatars with your face mapped onto them. Looks really funny when they get on stage.

Singstar has static displays and music videos. It uses custom microphones

Karaoke Revolution uses a scrolling pitch/lyric bar, has customizable characters, actual gameplay beyond a score, and covers of songs, so you can drown out the vocals. Plus minigames and more true duets. It uses any USB microphone.

Both support the EyeToy.

Karaoke Revolution supports the EyeToy Cameo. (Which is a program that's included to make a 3D model of your head)

Singstar lets you save your performance, take pictures, video, audio, and alter the playback. On a PS2 and Euro PS3s (Or any software BC ones) you can switch Singstar discs without rebooting.

Singstar games are easier to find and cost less.

(I own every single one of both, released in the US)

Neither of those are out in the US.

singstar >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> karaoke revolution

enough said, if you want one - get singstar (now even for ps3 aviable), karaoke revo loses in the core gameplay quite bad.

I think it honestly comes down to the song list. Go look up what's in each of them and pick the one that has the most songs you like. Everything else is gravy.

And yeah, you can use the Rock Band USB mic with K-Rev but not Singstar.

not sure what type of music you like. In waiting for Singstar PS3 in the US, i recently picked up amped and the 80's. Amped IMHO has the best collection of songs on it.

I don't own Karaoke revolution myself, but I tried a japanese version. If that's the same karaoke revolution, it seemed to me that KR is more "hardcore". You only have the background music, not the vocals, so the difficulty was far higher, especially when you don't know well the songs.

I think they're targetted towards very different peoples.

The Japanese (Konami developed) version of KR is totally different to the western (Harmonix developed/Konami published) one.

As for which to buy, it totally depends on the songs you want to sing I guess, but buying PS2 Singstar now wouldn't be a bad thing as you can use the mics on the PS3 version as well (if you choose to buy it later) and several recent non-Sony developed singing games are also now starting to use them.

Can't you do that in Singstar too? I've never played it, but that's the whole idea of karaoke. Sing instead of the original lead, not beside him, right?

Karaoke Revolution Volume 3 is the best Karaoke game ever; bar none.

Sony ripped Harmonix off with Singstar, so why would you want the rip off?

I could nto disagree more. KR >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Singstar.

KR's sing system and party modes are way more fun ..it is made by harmonix..nuff said

( I cannot speak for the new ps3 version of singstar) One thing though the American idol version of KR sucks.

On the PS3 version (and the first PAL Singstar game) yes, but not on other versions.

The reason on PS2 is that they couldn't get hold of the master tracks of every song that they wanted and it was restricting their song selections (since Singstar's selling point is authenticity, with the original artists and videos rather than using covers). For the PS3 version they came up with a software solution that works fairly well.

That's good to hear, thanks.

loved the first KR, was looking to get at least Vol 3, and Party, any suggestions on where to find them so that it doesn't cost me my left testicle? SOme of the online prices are ridiculous, especially for the PS2 versions. Also, I can't check the BC list from where I am are the Xbox games BC on 360?

No, none of the KR's are BC, which is shit (but I think it has to do with all the DLC for KR Party + KR 1).

KRV3 is amazing. It's worth the high price of admission for it. I used to have every KR, but I sold them all except for that one. I mean, it has the Beatles on it! The Beatles!

Anyways, karaokerevolution.net might have some copies for sale, check it out.

It also seems like Konami is remaking KR: American Idol for the PS3 so...

HMX developed KR's:
KR Volume 1
KR Volume 2
KR Volume 3
KR Party
KR Country

Secret Level Developed:
KR Volume 1 Xbox

Blitz Games Developed:
KR American Idol

In short, avoid the Blitz Games ones and pick up the others.

i've played KR Party, havent had a chance to play Singstar but picked up some old ones today so will sing it up this weekend, will be able to get a decent idea of which i like better. I was drawn towards singstar because they dont use covers, but the use of a cover band gets you a better selection and features (since singstar cant get master tracks quickly they cant just shut off voice). Its a trade off

On the topic of KR V. 3 (which I agree is the best karaoke game on the PS2), has anybody else had problems playing it on a PS3? All the other KR games work fine on mine (60 gig) but KR would fail to pick up the mic signal. So sad.

Well, found a copy of KR Party at Gamestop for $20, so I snatched it up. Seemed worth it since I couldn't find a cheaper price online. I'm amazed at the song selection, but I have a question, does it have any sort of single player mode other than quickplay? I tend to enjoy a progression in my games, and while quickplay is cool, something else might be nice. Mayhaps I'm just missing it.

Hopefully I can find KR3 as it looks badass.

If I remember correctly, KR:Party's single player mode is the least fully developed of the series (not that the other games' single player is anything mind blowing). It's mostly focused on party modes. Hence the name.

The only people recommending KR are those who haven't played Singstar. Granted the US version of Singstar doesn't have the wide range but it's such a polished product you really cannot overlook it.

The person reccomending KR (Me) has played both KR + Singstar to death. KR is far superior as it's actually a game and not just a "sing over this music video.".

Why buy Singstar when you can do the exact same thing by watching MTV Classics or something?

I've seen all of the KRs have problems on the PS3 in duet mode. If one person is singing too loud, it's going to be picked up by the second mic.

Also, note that KR is pretty much unplayable on LCD TVs (at least mine) because of horizontal refresh lag screwing up the scrolling text.

I have a US PS3 60 gig (i.e., hardware BC), and I can switch Singstar discs without rebooting. My friend has a US PS3 60 gig and he cannot. Don't know what's up with that. Was Sony selling Euro PS3's in the US?
