How decent is the Blu-Ray player on the PS3? I want to get a player, but I am thinking about just getting a PS3 because it's a bit cheaper and there might be a game down the line I might want to play. Is it a decent enough player, or should I just get a stand alone Blu-Ray player?

i've not yet watched a blu-ray on it, but from what i've read it's pretty good. what's probably a bonus is that it can easily get updates so if there are any major problems found with it, they can be addressed, and so far Sony has done a pretty excellent job at addressing issues found in the PS3 software and adding new features.

As far as I know, it's still the best BD player, regardless of price, and still cheapest too (equal in price with another standalone player).
The best BD player on the market, and will probably remain the best for some time to come. Only problems are inconsequential issues like no time display on the front of the unit, all but the most expensive multi-remotes are incompatible with the PS3's Bluetooth system, and the system fans (which are very quiet for me, I can't hear them at all from my couch, I would have to be watching the movie a foot from the screen to hear it even when the movie soundtrack is silent).

The PS3 supported the highest version of BD-J when it first came out (which is why it was the only player to support The Descent out of the box), and it's the only one on the market now that will be able to support the final BD-J spec come October.
I liked how Robert Heron put it the other on DL.TV. It was something along the lines of "since consoles are powerfull computers, they make perfect high definition players". I am not using my PS3 has a Blu-ray player yet (only DVD) but I can tell you that the video playback for DVD is far supperior than it's predecessor!

its great as a blu ray player, especially if you have a large 1080p tv
has good games like resistance, motorstorm and ng sigma
not to mention super stardust hd, which might be my favorite downloadable game for any system

The last update added true Dolby TrueHD support (the PS3 would decode the TrueHD track into an uncompressed PCM track), so there's always improvements.

The PS3 is actually a really great Blu-Ray player. Full support for 7.1 uncompressed sound over HDMI, deep color over HDMI, 1080p support, 24hz support if you have a high end tv that can sync at native film rate, and lots more. It's a fast loading player, it supports a nice Bluetooth remote that Sony sells, and on top of that, you can also play games.
And there are games.. a good double handful of PS3 games, and thousands upon thousands of PS2 and PS1 games.
If you're at all interested, I'd recommend jumping on the 60gig unit before supplies dry up, because it does have better PS2 backwards compatibility than the later models will have.

Of course, it's always possible things have been refined since the initial 3 SPU info. Regardless, I'm simply saying we just don't know at this point. I might work, it might not.

as far as feature set, no other BD player comes close to the PS3....it is the most flexible/upgradable BD player for sure
