PS3 Dev CGI Artist hates on the PS3

Now I’ve spoken with people who are on the technical side of the PS3. I’ve also talked with people on the technical side of the XBOX 360. The consistent comment I am hearing from people on my end is, “The XBOX 360 is better”. They are saying that it is capable of just doing more. (shrugs) Now take that for what its worth.

In closing, I started of VERY excited about the PS3. I was very confident that it was going to just destroy the XBOX 360 just on the name SONY alone. The more time that goes by the more I am becoming doubtful. Everything I’ve developed or seen developed has yet to be “next gen”. The poly counts are not really any higher, im not seeing sub surface scattering, im not seeing much HDR lighting. (or they are faking it and not really doing it), I’m not seeing next gen fluid dynamics or object dynamics. We dont have a controller, there is no network code and there is no box.

We're actually discussing this article in another thread. Keep in mind people, according to this article there are only 5 PS3 dev kits in the US.

Why are you guys so hypersensitive? He's just voicing his opinion. Granted, my avatar tells my side of the front lines with ease. However, not everything has to be confrontational. Some other people echo his thoughts, others don't. We shall find out come February where everybody is with this system

Hypersensitive?I don't even care actually.
It's just that I really don't understand those people that lose time of their life in making up articles to trash a system they don't like.

If the article is real (and I have a hard time believing it given the comments on dev kits), then yah it sounds like this guys team is pretty damn bad.
 
True or not...it really doesn't matter. The PS3 has plenty of horsepower...if there is a problem, its probably more related to being more difficult to program for than what some might have thought.

when will this stupid "lazy developer" talk end. Especially annoying because it comes mostly from people who don't have a clue about development.

Yes, I'm sure that everyone in the industry that hates on the PS3 is an "Xbot in disguise", but any negative Xbox 360 dev comments are legit.

I'd imagine that any article that said the 360 only had 5 dev kits in a territory, at any time, would've been met with the same results.
 
nice! very nice! I'm a developer myself and I had previouslly a conversation with a friend that is actually working close to both next gen consoles and his view differs to what I am reading right now!

What I can say is that structure or programming wise the 360 is a much more friendly console, yet again so was the xbox compared to the PS2.

Only time will tell.

Consensus simply isn't allowed to exist on B3D ;) So I'd be interested to hear why you think that.

I'd also say that it's not exactly a reaffirming statement given that there are just a handful of posters there who really know what they're talking about, let alone have direct access to the hardware - and in particular, the latter, rarely venture into explicit comparison between the systems.

Add in agendas boiled over from ati vs nvidia PC debate, alongside the usual console advocates, and..anyone can probably find words to take away that they like.

There are some amazing gems in there.

We received one of 5 PS3 dev kits in the United States some time ago.

We were the only company to my knowledge that showed something that ran it live on the box. Even then it was a scripted event. You could not pause the camera and fly around the scene. So if you saw the demo once, you saw it again the exact same way the second time.

Where is the final system? When is it coming out? No one knows and in the mean time people in the industry are starting to get just a little salty. I mean I was at e3 2005 and PS3 was almost no where to be seen.

I was one of the few artists selected to work on it for the demo. My job was primarily asset creation.

As a lurker on the Beyond3D forum, I can definitely agree with this.
 
I can't wait until next year. 2nd gen PS3 games and 3rd gen 360 games! Mmmm....

It's going to differ from developer to developer. Some will exploit the PS3 better than others. Namely, the ones who are used to multi-threads and 1st party developers.

Question. Is the general "buzz" lately that the PS3 is not as powerful as it seems or is harder to develop for than Sony had previously stated?
