PlayStation 3 Firmware (v3.10) Update Preview

Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.

This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.

Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:

The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.
The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.

PlayStation 3 Firmware v3.10: Facebook, Friends List Details

Hi Guys, just wanted to give you some more detail on the main features of firmware 3.10 for your PS3. Hopefully you will have seen the American video previously posted that demos some of these features. If not check it out here.

As shown in the video and the screenshots below, the Photo view on the XMB has been improved. Your photos are now shown in a grid format rather than in one line to make it easier for you to skip straight to the photo you want or browse an album quickly.

We’ve added some links to the worlds most popular social network site, Facebook.

If you want to show your friends what trophies you’ve earned or brag about your gaming prowess, simply go to account management, under PSN, and turn this option on to share your triumphs with your friends

You can also share information about your PSN Store purchases if you want. Turn this on the same way and you will be asked each time you purchase from the store if you want to share it on Facebook or not. Let all your friends know what you’re playing and get them to join you online.

Television lovers in other parts of Europe can now enjoy faster access to catch-up on TV with the addition of the following on-demand TV sites to the XMB over the next few days...
  • Spain: RTVE, Antena 3 and LaSexta
  • Netherlands: NOS
  • Czech/Poland/Hungary/Bulgaria/Romania & Slovakia: AXN/Animax

No need to watch catch-up TV on your PC anymore, enjoy it in the comfort of your living room and on your big screen.

We are working on adding more of these as soon as we can

You will also see in the screenshot below, and the previous video post, that the next stage of the Friends list update is complete and, as you can see, only the profile that’s selected has the coloured box.

This brings us to the final part of the main updated features which is that you can now customize your PSN profile with your favourite colour. Just open up your profile and click X on the upper left tab to get the colour pallet and to choose your colour.

This is the colour that your profile will appear as on all your friends PS3’s.

Ok, everything from that leak, now I want to know if there is anything useful in this update or not.
 
Good to see them adding some more social integration w/ games... that might actually get some legs under it now.

And yeah.. Wario's right.... For free.

We can change the fuckin' color on our fuckin' names. Do we need something else?
 
Needs more stealth updates. I recommend the following:

- Hide ticker
- Hide store icons
- Hide HOME icon
- Hide stupid photo app icon
- Make XMB icons smaller
- Calculate size of stuff in game folders
- Copy All option to game saves
- MKV support!
- Black PSOne memory card icon (they have like every other color but not black yet they do for PS2?)
- Ability to rip our already owned PSOne games to the hdd (I can dream!)
- Background download of game updates
- Return the game bootup jingle sequence thingy!

If none of the above is included I'm gonna keep right on trucking along with 2.80!

I only have 1 game with an online mode and it was already dead the day I got it... day 1! :lol

Whaaat? Advertising where it once wasn't is inconsequential o.o?? Besides I listed a buncha things they could add that I'd like! If they're gonna add stuff I don't, they could meet me halfway and add stuff I do want!

...so you would rather avoid things that really have no impact on your gaming experience at the expense of any online functionality?
 
I hope they make a game dedicated xmb in the future that simply ignores all those menu options that you can do anything with without quitting the game. It might be faster.

It always amazes me how some people can be annoyed by such inconsequential things. The Store icon, really? It's bothersome to have an easy to access link to where you can add more content to your system? It boggles the mind.
 
They should allow an option to change the font size, also files should be greyed out instead of disappearing. I don't know how anyone can think that was a good idea.

Its the way I feel.. what are you contributing if your talking about crap to someone else in another game. Its the main reason I prefer playing on psn to xbl

You should re-read your original post again. Particularly the part where you say "team chat"

Why are you assuming that everyone using cross-game chat will be playing online games in the first place?

Because they usually are. Plus they use it to cheat. I hate that feature with a passion.

the lack of a GREAT feature is the main reason you prefer psn over xbl? do you have any idea how dumb your reasoning sounds?
 
I like the way they changed up the Friends List. It's better looking now. I can't wait to change the color of my PSN ID. Though, Sony if you are listening to feedback, make use of the space that is in the PSN ID. Put trophy information there please, that would be nice, thank you.

They said avatars were coming in a few months. That was when 3.00 launched back in August. I want all sorts of cool avatars, because I'm getting tired of the ones that have been there for ages.

it makes sense. If you play with a lot of randoms and they're all in party chat, strategizing is impossible, as they can't hear you.
 
I hate Sony's "coming soon" bullshit. It's a fucking FW update, not a product to be sold. No need to dangle the shit in front of the audience. Just drop your stupid lil vids and release it the same night.

Right, but thats the fault of the people you're playing with, not the feature itself. Its not like you find a lot of strategizing in random matches anyways.

The video was most likely recorded a while back. And well, the FW was probably not 100%, so "coming soon" is the best that they could do.

Besides, it had already been leaked, so they might as well officially post a preview even if it's not quite ready for release.
 
after the thread asking about ps3 game installs and some of the posts in this one i'm convinced that some folks will make up any old dumbass excuse as to why a feature isn't good when it isn't on your system of choice.

So now we have moved to complaining about receiving updates of an upcoming firmware after complaining before that we wanted a heads up on upcoming firmware and now I am complaining about you complaining?

At least it isn't 6 months out.
