PS3 Firmware 3.21 (The Penguin Killing Firmware) is out

blindrocket said:
No, but I can try it.

EDIT: Didn't work.

I've confirmed the TV is not on mute and that the volume is turned up. I've turned the PS3 on and off and also the TV on and off.

The firmware update killed my sound. ;_;

Power cycle your TV, perhaps? I've had to do this occasionally when it refuses to detect an active HDMI input, or an HDMI input loses sound output.

I'm so torn about updating even though I don't use OtherOS, I'd always planned on it as a kind of rainy day scenario backup :lol

Try using the PS3's audio output on some other device to see if it's even ouputting anything in the first place.

Given any thought to making that torrent? If nothing else, could you put up the last Spiderman font firmware?

I'm shocked at the hostility on the board shown towards people who like to keep what they've paid for.

I knew that people who cared about linux, or even SACD would be in the minority, but this is crazy. I worry that if firmware regression becomes possible it will be such a fringe interest I won't be able to hunt it down successfully. Plus I'd rather download a torrent seeded by someone here rather than someone I know nothing of.

I treat that 60GB like the gold she is. Heavy as a brick, loud as all hell. I don't use any of the nifty features new firmwares have added. I do use SACD. I do use the memory card slots. And I do use PS2 BC--through component as the PS2 outputs a pretty noisy (voltage-wise) signal that my scaler doesn't like. I've used Linux, and frankly, even if I'm not using it regularly I simply will not support having them remove it.

The only improvement the slim made IMHO was losing that terrible "chrome", and adding bitstream DTS-MA. I've got an equipment rack--don't really care about the reduced footprint frankly.

Old versions of the firmware are easy to find on the net. Just do a Google search for old PS3 firmware.

he fixed it (read his update post ) , look like one of his HDTV's HDMI ports is busted or something.

I did fix it, but it wasn't due to that particular HDMI port. They all work now.

I suppose it just didn't handshake correctly between the TV and the PS3 after the update. Turning the TV off and unplugging the HDMI cord, then plugging it back in and turning the TV back on seemed to work. Power cycling the TV without unplugging the cable did not work, surprisingly.

Let me know the version you want and I'll put it up somewhere for you. I'm not sure if I want to be responsible for a 4 GB torrent.

Should I really be concerned about this? Gaf can you educate me in two sentences? BTW I'm a casual gamer who has never thought of using another OS on my ps3.

In your case no, just download the firmware and get back to playing games/watching movies/etc...

Sure, but have you followed any of those links? Five or six clicks in you realize all they're doing is linking back to an official Sony site which houses the current firmware.

Plus they all have the same filename with no denotation of version number.

It looks like I'm covered so no worries--your google-fu must be much better than mine...

Did Amazon refund you for the lost OtherOS feature ? On what base did they decide the refund amount ?

Boot Camp or Virtualization perhaps?
According to missile you don't need to use that program to bypass the check, you can do it by just changing your DNS server :lol

Its too late for me, but hopefully this helps you guys:

Just a quick hint.

You don't have to update to fw 3.21 to use the PSN. Just enter the following
DNS -- 67.202.81.137 -- into your PS3 under Network Settings. The server fakes
the authentication and hands the connection back to your PS3 shortly thereafter.
No proxy needed.

Awesome.

So if I installed this update (which I did) on my system that had Linux on it, what happened to that space? Do I now have 10 GB of dead space on my hard drive?

Edit - I'm reposting this to the more popular thread.

nvm, figured it ou.t

So I've just updated to the newest firmware, but now my PS3 doesn't recognise the ethernet cable being plugged in. Is this a known problem?

After the update to 3.21, every time I quit Just Cause 2, the system reboots itself after 3 beeps. It's the only game so far where this has occurred, but still. Boooooooooo. :lol

I had an older game that kept doing that about 6 months ago. Never got fixed and I traded the game when I was done anyway. Warhawk did that for a bit in the beginning. I think its a game issue, not a console issue from what other people said back then.

just checking - this allows to connect to the psn, but not the store, right?
I can't seem to get on the store.

Still, thanks. This is pretty awesome :)
Still not updating on my side. I kinda want to get a slim now :/

Noticed my slim started acting up after this new update. Now when I quit out of a game to the XMB it freezes for about 10-15 secs. Before the update it went straight to the XMB :(

Just mentioning the DNS bypass works well. I still have a 3.20 and logging into PSN without trouble.
Would you mind checking if it's possible for you to go into the store/download stuff and also play online with people who have upgraded to 3.21? Thanks in advance.

When I installed the proxy and used that, I was able to sign into PSN, look at the echochrome sale in the store and pass, and sync my trophies. I haven't tried playing games like CoD:WaW online yet, but did receive invites from friends who WERE playing and HAD updated.

I still haven't bought anything in the store, but i'm able to check the store, sync trophies, add friends, and i've patched one game and played games bought from the PSN store. Everything works fine so far.

Wait what? What did you do?

He asked Amazon for a refund on the lost functionality - they valued the loss at £84 or whatever, so they'll cut him a check for that. And no, he doesn't return the machine, the lost functionality was already 'returned' via the fw update. (This should work in the EU, in countries like the UK with sufficient time 'coverage' for functionality, but consumer law may not be so favourable elsewhere).

Neat, huh? Almost makes me wish I hadn't imported my machine.

I wonder if Amazon will defer to Sony with these refunds or what...I could see Sony heavily disputing the value of the refund Amazon is offering...

Thank you, I will try that tonight when I get home and will tell my friends to hold on with the update until further notice. Thanks again.

i've used both the proxy tool and the dns trick and was able to access the store (even downloaded the LP2 MP demo) just fine.

Eugh, installed the update, now I'm getting account errors and apparently the PSN store is not authorized for my region when my account does actually work. So no logging into my account or the store. Great job Sony.

According to Kassatsu's PSN thread, people have mentioned that PSN is down for maintenance or was earlier today anyway.

I thought that might be it, but it seems to working for buddies of mine, and mine still says it's not eligible for my region. At other points, my account just doesn't work and it says an error has occured. Guess I'll wait a few more hours before I really start to fret.

Why did no one tell me about the proxy trick when shitware 3.0 got released? >:(
