PS3 Linux thread.

I'm excited at the prospect but I'm waiting until a distro is released specifically to act as a media center (ie., make me forget I'm using Linux)
 
I isntalled Fedora and YDL - both were a NIGHTMARE to get on the box, and both performed identically with mixed idiosyncrasies. In the end, I went with YDL, but I forgot it was on there til you made this thread. Anything new out?
 
Since Linux was announced as a possibility for the PS3 I have been hoping and planning on using the PS3 as my household computer. I even ditched XP on my laptop to run Ubuntu to get a little use to Linux and I really liked Ubuntu so I would like to run it on my PS3. Now I suppose I should start searching for the PS3 version of it...

I am sure I am capable of doing the hard work, but I really would rather it be pretty simple. Maybe I will wait until it has been made easier?
The PS3 browser is doing me fine now (that's what I'm currently using) for most internet surfing and I can live without AIM for a little while.
I appreciate the link though, I'll check it out and see if now is the time for me to get Ubuntu on here or not.

The best example of what's possible with PS3 linux right now is the Gentoo LiveCD. You put that sucker in, select your resolution, and it loads. Too bad its just a live CD rather than an easy installer as well.
 
Using YDL with Mplayer and I've been pretty happy with it's performance on regular xvid/divx/wmv files. HD stuff wont play at all or it's a stuttering mess.

where was this tutorial when I installed Ubuntu on my PS3? It was a pain the ass getting Ubuntu up and running on my PS3. I must have spent hours locked away in my basement trying to get it up and running. I finally got it to work but it was no where as easy as installing Fedora Core 5 on my friends PS3. Props to that guide it looks very helpful and I wish I had it when I was trying to install Ubuntu.

its still nowhere near as easy as installing Fedora or YDL even with the guide.
 
Sorry to bump this thread, but I tried to install YDL just now.. and got the following message.

udf-fs no vrs found

From what I understand, it can not detect the file system on the disc which contains YDL? I tried burning it twice now with two different burning software. I also re-downloaded the ISO, nothing worked.

You can get LinuxMCE and install it over Ubuntu. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems to be a promising piece of software. If you really want to go crazy with Linux, get the PS3 HD Xtender and hook up a 750GB Sata HDD up.
 
Has there been anything interesting done on Linux that would interest PS3 owners? Emulation is fairly interesting, but anything else?

The problem with it is the reality of using a PC from a couch. I can just about handle using Media Center, since it's actually a media center, but my PS3 is more often used for Blu Rays and software downloads. I just think using a PC from your couch for actual PC stuff, instead of gaming and media, is a nonstarter.

Folks who have their PS3 at a monitor on a desk (and there are plenty here on gaf) probably have a much better experience than couch po-ta-toes.

An ironic haxor for PS3 would be getting MCE to run, but it doesn't have enough ram, so that's just a pipe dream. Any sign of a better media solution?
 
Is it possible to make YDL run in full screen? RIght now I have borders surrounding the screen when in 720p (which is my tv resolution). Any guides you can recommend?
 
MythTV is another one you should at to that list. It is a very good Linux distro designed to replicate Tivo and works just fine on the PS3.

No, MythTV is an application, not a distribution. There are cut-down distributions based on designed solely to run MythTV (MythDora, KnoppMyth etc) but MythTV itself can be run on any Linux distribution on PS3.
 
I'm very curious about this, but is there any REAL benefit? I have an X360 that receives vids, photos, and music all piped directly from my WinXP machine via WMP11. Clearly, using my PS3 as a media center has little real appeal (particularly since I never even use my X360 as one, despite being properly set up).
 
So which PS3 Linux OS/app has the best media player that can work off the controller alone (no mouse/keyboard, please, we're looking for XBMC competitors).
 
256M is kinda tight for Linux. i would prefer a lot to see http://haiku-os.org/ on it. If you remove firefox, you can do anything with 64M, add firefox and 128M is OK ... at 256M it's a lot of RAM for that OS.

Also, it's the only OS that i know that really have good design for multicore systems.

If you want to give a try to porting it, the project is still accepting application for it as it was choosen to participate into the "google summer of code" initiative.

My PS3 has replaced my WinXP machine. I use it for word processing, web browsing, photoshopping, email, and retro gaming (scummVM and DOSbox). Only problem is the lack of a flash player.
 
I would mostly use this for playing DIVX files from my Mac. Sadly, from what I am hearing the wireless doesn't work so I wouldn't be able to transfer files over with ease. Oh well, hopefully we'll see some better use of the PS3 hardware over time.

hey is there a skype client for linux? i'll check on the site right now i guess but is it working ok on ps3 linux? what about video chat? and what hardware works with it? usb cams and mics?

Only on x86 platforms.

Remember, the PS3 does not use an x86 cpu. ;)
 
I didn't really find an answer in the link above, so i just drop a short question. Is it possible to run Linux on a SD TV?
 
How does MythTV work for the PS3? How do you record TV shows if there's no port to connect one's TV cable to the PS3?

EDIT: After some searching, I found the answer to my question. Looks like all you'll need is an USB TV tuner and install a few patches. Pretty interesting. :)
 
i dont think the graphical interface works in yellodog unless yr doing it via dvi/hmdi or component.

i se the auto mode creates a /boot , / , and swap .... yet in the instal guid it says if done manualy to create /home,swap ,and /

i was thinking just a swap and / for the rest ...what is a /boot partion for? .. i thought just for dual booting between windows and linux ... ?
 
There are various reasons for having a seperate /boot partition. One that's important to PCs is that an OS cannot boot from a PC BIOS past a specific point on the HD, and putting the kernel files at the front ensures they're within this limit.

/home is best kept seperate, as you can reformat the OS and still keep all your personal data and ALL settings made by your account.
 
I've installed YDL but I'm annoyed that there is no wi-fi support.

I also believe that the best showcase for Linux on the PS3 will be when someone produces an installs that boots into MythTV with next to zero configuration. Oh and it has to support bluetooth controllers and remotes.

You can get a GUI at lower resolutions but you need to set the video mode from the boot menu. And then edit the X11 settings. And set the init to 5 to boot into a GUI.

None of this is exactly intuitive but I now have it running at 576i. You can also use VNC to remotely log into the PS3 at any resolution you like. I think it may even be possible to use NX with some extra effort.

Finally you might want to choose a different X session since the default Enlightenment gui in YDL is atrocious. I think xfce would have been a better fit if they wanted a light alternative to GNOME.
 
yeh i got yellow dog going yesterday, pretty simple, but 1st thing i did was start mucking about with the videomodes and ended up hanging the system , must have made an error somehwhere.

not eactly as failsafe as windows i guess in that area.

I don't have any links but it was fairly straight forward. Just login as root and run vncserver and it will start a session. I think YDL also has a firewall set up by default so you have to enable a port. I can't remember the command but it was simple and a google should find it. On the client side, install TightVNC or similar and connect to the server. My only gripe is that either VNC or the widgets had a problem (possibly with transparency) and rendered black in some themes.
 
I read some of the FAQS, but I was wondering if I can still use it if I don't have a DVD burner?

Like can I transfer the iso with a USB cable rather than burning it on a DVD & putting it on the PS3?
 
Do you have a CD Burner at all? Other then that your only other option is purchasing the Yellow Dog PS3 edition.
