I've got serious sound loss and nothing has worked. All sound. No XMB, games, movies, or download.

Tried a bunch of XMB fixes. Re-initialized the HDMI detection. Factory default reboot. Everything is perfect but no sound.

Switched HDMI cables. The TV is fine in all other modes. Looked on the Internet and tried the prevalent suggestions.

Help me Obi-wan. Can a PS3 blow a sound card even?

Deselect all audio decoders in sound settings.

PS3 Sound Settings has Audio Ouput Settings (three choices), Audio Multi-Output (on / off), and Key Tone (on / off)

I couldn't find the settings you mentioned.

Go to audio output, hdmi, manual, deselect all the formats that you can.

They're always like that. What are you using for audio? Red/White, Optical, HDMI?

What happens when you use the red/white RCA cables that came with the machine for sound?

I had the same problem, what make is your tv? Hold down the power button on the ps3, if it doesn't work, keep playing around with it, that is how i fixed mine.

if all fails use the composite cables that came with your ps3 for sound to see if you get sound.

Are you going through a receiver? Does the receiver support sound over HDMI?

Does your TV give you the ability to switch between the TV speaker and external speaker? My TV allows me to do that, and if you select 'external' with the input being HDMI no sound comes out of the TV at all. Switch it back to TV speaker though, and it's fine. Maybe try resetting the sound settings on your TV?
