PS3 Owners Facing Wide-Spread Problems Downloading Games Ahead of PS Store Closure

Lol, where’s that thread that told me I was a crazy collector that just wanted to be GameStop.

No, I’ve been lied to by the cloud before (hi geocities, hi Ubuntu cloud), and prefer a tangible copy of great games.

If you’re nice, you can maybe borrow my copy.

If the games you are trying to get have a physical version, look for that. I wouldn't risk getting a digital copy at this point.
For such old games (let alone the PS1 and PS2 classics) physical will definitely cost you more, in some instances MUCH more, and it will only get worse once the store has closed down for good.

Sony should really do the bare minimum effort of porting the PS1 and PS2 libraries to PS5 through basic emulation, there is no technical or economic excuse not to do that. But I guess they see those games on average sell 0.1% of what native PS4 and PS5 games do, so they won't bother even for the free boost in brand image.

EDIT: spelling

I wouldn't trust Sony with digital stuff at all. They don't own their own infrastructure and when they stop paying rent say goodbye to your digital stuff.
Considering the majority of their software sales are now digital, if Sony came out one day and said you would no longer be able to access your past purchases... the amount of damage that would do to their brand would be nuclear. I wouldn't bet on this happening but then again, you've got Jim Ryan in command of the starship Sony and I would bet on him continuing to be incompetent at his job.

Yeah, PS1 especially. I don't think there is any good reason not to have those available to us on the PS5.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.

I think a lot of people seem to have forgotten how much of a shitshow the PS3 was. I hate that system, which is why it is so sad that the PS5 is not backwards compatible with it because there are some really good games imprisoned on this POS console. that terrible controller, that featureless OS, that god awful store!

last time I turned on my PS3 (like 5 months ago) I started the store, which needed a fucking update that took 5min to install, and after 20sec the fucking store crashed the whole system and I had to do the system data restore/check bullshit, which is bad enough when it happens on a PS4 where it takes like 3min, but on PS3 that shit can take a fucking hour!
after that shit was done I started the store again, and after A MINUTE! (no joke) the start page finally loaded in... and I tried to navigate the extremely laggy and stuttering menu down to the new releases and demos... fucking hell man, it's easier to navigate the Google Play store on a 10yo android phone than it is to navigate that store on PS3

I hate the PS3 with passion... but the MotorStorm series, Folklore, MGS4, the Resistance series and some other good exclusives are still stuck on there with no option to play on a system that doesn't suck ass :(
I can't wait until PS3 emulation works completely flawlessly (it's already on a good trajectory)

Seems these games are already playable on RPCS3.
Honestly would be nice if Sony supported a port of the emulator for the ps5, imagine the ps5 being able to play the entire PS library since the ps1

I am planning to try it. but not sure my PC is good enough to emulate them smoothly. It's legit depressing turning on a PS3 lol
also I don't have a BluRay drive in my PC... so I need to get those games onto it in another way, maybe install PS3Hen on the PS3 and rip them?... I'll look into options wink wink lol

Seems performance is good even on middle range GPUs, might be limited if you have an old cpu though

performance seems decent, though its not ideal from the videos i've seem.

the videos I've just looked up are not that promising. God of War 3 runs at around 40fps at best with MLAA turned off. and that video used basically my setup, Ryzen 2600 + GTX1070

yeah, but do keep in mind the date of the videos. the performance from a build of 1 year ago might be worse than one from a more recent one

true,
like I said, I will try it soon. I hope they run reasonably well. I'm also still hoping that RPCS3 will eventually get a Retroarch Core and will work on Series X as that should have better CPU performance than my PC.

Fuck playstation under Jim ryan. Things were do great under shawn layden and jack trenton a couple years ago. Gio corsi was hyping up the vita, they were backing indies in a major way, they openly communicated with their audience. Now we have 2005-2008 era playstation all over again. I always thought arrogant sony was a meme but there is some truth to it
Yep it does feel like 05-08 era Sony. They got major sales so they don’t give a fuck.

The best part of this whole thing is Sony is now selling a digital-only PS5 console - when they are on the verge of shutting down digital access to a past console.
Not a good look at all.
How could anyone trust them with digital at this point.

It's OK things are better now, they will be different this time.

I know deep down they really love me, they wouldn't act like this if they didn't. 😆

Because it's a different era now and everyone's hands have been forced into digital regardless. How many version 1.0's do you fully trust to not run like garbage or be broken from discs this gen? Not as many as PS3 games I can tell you that much.

People are stupid as fuck for rushing to SPEND MONEY at a digital store that's about to close. Just download the god damn games and play them on a PC emulator. Stop cradling Sony's balls, ffs.
Shit like this is why Sony thinks they can do no wrong.

If you want them to be better, make them be better.

Or spend money you wouldn't have spent to play games on a system you won't touch.

Nobody wants to play old games. Right boys?

I wouldnt trust Sony either. Nintendo too. Out of the 3 console makers, MS is the only one that puts in some consistent effort for digital marketplaces and BC. Not perfect of course. It's not like every old ass Xbox games works on modern systems, but at least you can see the attempt with some OG games and 500 or so 360 games.

Sony's made the most profit on recent gaming, yet still shut things down, so it goes to show PS+ fees for infrastructure maintenance was all PR BS way back. They close things just as fast now (studios along with it) and are just pocketing the profits.

And it's not like Sony or Nintendo are so dumb and poor they'll never figure out BC or selling old games. Many of their systems have done BC before. Its just that it's unpredictable when they do it and for how long. For Sony, even within the same generation, some models do BC (wave one), some dont (later models).

Also, probably has to do with MS being PC focused so they'll always have a mindset of continued support for a while until its really time to cut the cord. It's not like they still sell Windows 98 or Win 7. It's all about Win 10. But the length of service, support and compatibility can go on for decades.

Once bought you can download them anytime from your library. The store closing just stops you from purchasing more.

I stopped investing in Sony's digital library when PS4 launched. It was clear they didn't give a fuck about your old games then so I don't see why it's such a shock now.

The best way to make your voice heard over this is just to not buy anything from their digital store.

Microsoft have got this one completely right and the amount of time and money Sony would now have to invest to catch up will be ludicrous, so it's not going to happen.

Many people find it a bit petty when I say that the main reason I ditched the Sony PS brand was because of no PS3 BC. As the PS360 gen was for me the starting point where I transitioned to digital I have stuff digitally bought on my two PS3's, I was lucky enough to not have bought almost anything digitally on PS3 like I did on my 360 as PSN's download speeds are (were?) atrocious and took me over 2-3 times more on average to download something the same size so that's the reason why I bought more physically on PS. With PS completely abandoning the PS3 and Xbox doubling down on BC I have a clear preference to be in the XBOX ecosystem.

Something like PS is doing now would be met with enormous outrage by the Xbox community for sure. That attitude confirms to me that the Xbox community are way more assertive against their company of choice and don't bend for anti-consumer policies. But this is hypothetical 'cos Xbox wouldn't do that to begin with, because they don't have any reason to do so, they own their infrastructure and the cost of running it is essentially already payed by their big company clients.

I was tempted to go buy some PS3 games after the news too, but then I thought of it and it seems like I would reward them for something I'm 100% against! I chose to vote with my wallet last gen and continue to do so. I don't support anti-consumer policies – like Sony is making – and I'm not blindly loyal to any company doing so.

im no expert but i think the place where games are stored and for download, is much more costly to maintain than a storefront?

do they allow backups to be stored on PS3? If not they should do it now so people can have keep game collections once the store is shut down

When games typically get removed from the store they still remain available to download via the library. I expect this will be the same just on a larger scale.

This is why I’m downloading everything I can now. I have all games downloaded on to two PS3 systems, a slim and a super slim (which was a cheap backup console in case my slim failed like my OG fat ps3). I done the same with the Wii when Mario pulled the plug on the shop.

if they both fail and I lose them, then thats the risk. I am looking into getting a ps3 with custom firmware to backup my digital stuff. There is a great video on how to do that with a vita. Although I like keeping things legit, I don’t mind if I have a separate console that’s modded.

This is why I would prefer to use a service like gamepass. Atleast I won't feel like I'm losing the games I've bought.

What a shit show, Sony.
if/when gamepass shuts down servers you will have access to zero games and would have paid almost the same amount if not more during the time you were paying for access depending on how you buy games.

Sony are really taking the piss here. Why don't they just migrate everything to the new store? Or offer BC and continue to sell it? I know the amount of people who buy these games is probably small but the bad PR right now is not worth the savings they make.

Yeah, it's the only thing that separates it a bit. If a service ended I would lose access to that content. it sucks but at least I wont feel like i'm losing stuff Ive purchased. It's strange that I can make that disconnect but I can.

Who knows Sony might wake up when the PS6 arrives when it comes to backward compatibility fact is the PS5 has nothing as good (at the time of typing this..) as Motorstorm, TopSpin 4, Alpha Protocol, Blur, Resistance Fall of Man....Motostorm RC ..Spec Ops the Line....to name BUT a few..

But that's just true, most people have moved away from the a PS3 a long time ago, if it wasn't for the store closure news no one would bother with going back to PS3.

This is a misleading statement.

Yes "most" people in the world who play videogames dont care about PS3, in that if you consider all the people who play videogames on a console in the world. But this is an enthusiast gaming forum so a lot of us here do. I still have a stack of PS3 games to play (physical thank god) including Demons Souls. I just beat 3D Game Dot Heros a couple years ago as well.
