So, this is starting to happen a lot, and I'm curious as to whether it's the PS3, or the HDMI cable.

When I'm playing games, the video output of the ps3 would sometime turn off, and then turn back on half a second later. This happen to both PS3 and PS2 games.

Has this been happening to anyone? I wonder if its the HDMI cable, because the sound isn't being interrupted, only the video is.

What brand TV, and are you using an HDMI switch or feeding the HDMI through an A/V receiver?

Seriously tho, this has happened to me and other people a couple of times since launch but in your case seems to be more frequent.

Don't have a clue about what causes it.

Hmm. Well crap.

I think you better hope it's the cable. Order a new one from monoprice or someplace else cheap and see if that fixes it. Also do the other normal checks for video glitches: make certain the console isn't overheating due to blocked ventilation, make certain you aren't overloading a surge protector or power strip, try the console on another HDMI-enabled display (and try another HDMI source on the TV), etc. If none of that helps, guess you're calling Sony.

I haven't heard of this specific problem with PS3 before.

I hate to say it, but the most likely culprit is the LVDS receiver and data de-serializer that makeup the HDMI input in your TV.

Second most likely culprit is the PS3 output drivers/serializer. A far distant third is the cable.

Do you have any other HDMI or DVI hardware you can test on the TV (make sure you test the same port), or do you have another input in the TV you could test? Of course, all inputs in the TV could go bad, particularly if it's a data de-serialization/sync issue post LVDS receiver, but this is unlikely.

Try resetting the video settings as well. Hold the power button on your PS3 for 5 seconds when booting up.

Are you using audio through HDMI cable as well? Have you try disabling HDMI audio and use optical out instead? It's kinda known that PS3 sends out invalid audio signal when there's no signal to send and it makes some tvs freak out. (some are more than the others even for the same brand of the tv)

I'm actually using the audio from the AV cables.

I think I'm gonna try and move my PS3 to a more ventilated spot to see if it fixes the problem or not. It's weird, cuz before, my screens don't blink, but it only just started so recently.

I hope it's not the HDMI connector on the TV> THat woudl suck

i've had this happen a few times with s video and an sd tv. I thought it was just a lose connection prob. I haven't seen it in a few weeks now.

That's wat puzzle me. It happens more frequent for PS2 games. I'm playing VP2 right now, and it seems to happen a lot when there's a lot of stuff going on at the screen

I've had this happen very rarely too while playing with my PS3 connected via HDMI to my Bravia. Never thought much of it honestly. Hope its nothing serious. :/

Pal PS3 to KDL40W2000 via HDMI @ 1080p. Never had this problem, and first time I've heard of it.

Hmm I think the same thing happened to me, the cause was a cheap HDMI cable... I bought another HDMI cable and now it works fine...

It used to happen to me sometimes(Toshiba CRT HDTV). But it hasn't happened recently. What's funny is that it only used to happen when I pressed the PS button to quit out of a game. Like it couldn't handle going from brightly lit screen to all black or something.

I can hear a clicking sound when i play the game or return to the menu.

sometimes, i can see white/noisy screen with the clicking sound.

TV used: Samsung LCD.
cable: HDMI.

nothing serious though.

Hmm, I'd forgotten about that...

This used to happen on my previous plasma but never occurs on my current display (which supports HDMI 1.3).

my PS3 is doing that during DVD playback, very random. Atleast with previos firmwares, never tried that with new.

Also Bravia, PS3 connected via HDMI. And using pretty cheap cable (only one i could found on PS3 EU launch day)

Could be impedance or interference issues. HDMI does not meet serial digital video standards (SDI) in many cases. It's not required by the format. So most cables are twisted pair. The signal will breakdown over distance and it will take plenty of interference. You won't see that as much with Component, because the cabling standard itself adheres to a much higher standard.
