(PS3Linux) Open Platform for PS3 - site open with instructions

Seriously bad luck, especially considering the quality control from sony on the ps3 is pretty good. Probably cause it was shipped from overseas, that extra handling is sometimes not good for electronics.

That video actually ran pretty good, am I correct in the assumption that its only using one cell at the moment?
It's only using the SPE, no PPEs at all. Ffmpeg has no Cell optimization for the moment.

LowTymes, definitely looks like a resolution settings issue. (I've seen it before on my PC CRT)

I can't say anymore though cause i've not installed linux yet

Since some of you seem intent on using YDL 5.0 with the PS3, I would be very interested in hearing how the OS and its various applications work with the PS3's relatively sparse RAM allotment. When the time comes, can you Linux PS3 masters be able to comment on virtual memory use, Firefox performance, MP3 player performance and openoffice performance, as well as your general feelings on how people who use everyday computers (like my old iBook G4) would feel about the stability, responsiveness and performance of YDL.

With bated breath,

If you're a Mac user, Linux will likely drive you NUTS. Even though I will now be savagely attacked for saying this, Linux is neither easy to use, nor pretty. Many things that you take for granted on OSX are either missing completely, or require convoluted and arcane Linux knowledge to access. YDL is going to be a better solution for some because of its inclusion of e17, and it will no doubt lead to some awesome apps, but Linux is not a good replacement for OSX. It's a great freebie install on an otherwise closed system.

One of the reasons that Linux isn't simpler to use, is that Linux proponents love that it's kinda complex and fairly arcane.

I just spent the better part of four hours trying to install Fedora.

<puts up linux hate umbrella and waits, trembling.>

Would you be satisfied with only one flavour of coffee? With Linux, you can experience several rich blends of optimum operating system performance to get you through your day. The differences between flavours and working them are delightful, delicious quirks that you feeble decaf people would never understand.. [/dazed linux user humping stuffed penguins]

You mean the same Fedora that pretty much installs itself for you? :lol Come on dude, thats weak sauce total. Thats scary considering that Fedora is pretty much one of the if not THE easiest Distro too install.

Unless your talking about Drivers and stuff. Which in case I would agree with you.

Also, aesthetically, Gnome and KDE BLOW Windows XP out of the water and better Vista. I still prefer OSX above them though. Enlightenment (which is supposed to be in YDL) is supposed to be real nice too.

.

The Fedora ISO took 12 hours to download over DSL, only works from a DVD - then failed to install on the PS3. Which also requires you creating PSP style bootloaders on a memory card. Yep, practically installs itself...so you can take your weak sauce and sprinkle it on your jerk stew.
:)

So I am waiting for YDL tomorrow.

Oh shit, the PS3. I thought you meant in general Stinkles! On the PC front it DOES install itself. Not sure about the PS3 though

/me looks at thread title

oh shit

had ydl beeen released yet? :D

The store still has "coming 11/27" beside Enhanced Account subscriptions for YDL 5.0, so I don't think they're quite ready. I imagine it will be later in the day. YDL.net has been overhauled, seemingly, though. Not sure if that was just today, but it's looking different than it did a couple of weeks ago.

They also legally don't have the right to restrict the torrents of those ISOs because of the GPL, so we should see it today, just without easy download from their ftp.

True. Is someone else allowed to host it via ftp, or are torrents just the only practical option because of the size? Or is there a legal restriction on others offering ftp downloads?

There are no restrictions at all.

I think I might pay up to get it early..it's only the price of a game really. And I'm impatient :p

Why did I think it would be free? :-(

Back to Fedora for me...

EDIT: Learn to read young Stinkles.
It's been known that it wouldnt be free initially...2 weeks from now it will be free or was that around christmas time?

Should be freely-redsitributable under GPL anyway, yes? Meaning (hopefully) there will be a source of it quickly.

I haven't even installed Fedora yet, so playing with that will keep me busy. I'll reinstall when some people have YDL-built apps out and there's one I have to have (probably in a few days).

Pardon me for not keeping up, but has anybody gotten access to the controllers with Fedora yet? As in, MAME?

Well I'm TRYING to get it right now, but the sign up process for YDL.net is most confusing. The account creation process asks for a mandatory coupon code that you supposedly recieve when you sign up for it through the store, but there was no sign of any coupon code. So I've contacted support about it..maybe there's a delay between sign up and receiving your coupon code, but really it should be completely automatic and instant.

(A confusing sign-up process probably isn't the best thing to have when you're hoping/expecting an influx of new customers)

Set to launch Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 for Sony's Playstation 3 later today, it seems Terra Soft Solutions has gone one step further in their commitment to the Playstation 3 and the architecture that powers it; browsing Terra Soft's online offerings, astute observers will note that Terra Soft currently has plans in the works to actually begin selling Playstation 3 consoles with Yellow Dog Linux pre-installed.

One of the primary targets of such a move could be private individuals interested in a 'full featured' Playstation console, but uncomfortable with the idea of installing the Linux partition and OS themselves. Yet perhaps even more likely, the target may in fact be corporate customers interested in the power and resources latent in the console, but put-off by the idea of dealing with game vendors and Linux self-installation as being the sole means of acquisition.

Whatever the case, Terra Soft has put forth an intriguing proposition to entice just such a clientele...

In a bold move with the potential to significantly lower the cost of entry for would-be HPC Cell users, Terra Soft is indicating that they will soon offer full PS3 HPC clustering support for interested customers via their Y-HPC 2.0 management suite. Used in the creation of Sony's own Cell-based supercompute clusters, and recently demonstrated at the Supercomputing '06 industry show on both IBM and Mercury Cell-based blades, Y-HPC 2.0 supports heterogenous and cross-architectural node imaging and creation with a focus on Cell integration. Current support includes Intel x86, AMD Opteron, Apple G3-G5, IBM's JS20/JS21, p5, and QS20 offerings, Mercury's Cell blade, and Sony's Playstation 3.

The potential is clear; customers seeking to add or experiment with Cell in their compute clusters could do so as easily as by purchasing a Playstation 3 and integrating it through Y-HPC. With a per cluster licensing fee of ~$4000, and a per node licensing fee of ~$200, a Y-HPC 2.0 managed cluster has the option of adding Cell into the mix at a probable cost of under $1000 per node - a significant savings over the larger tin offered by IBM and Mercury that will likely appeal to HPC operations running on smaller budgets.

Though what this initiative may mean for Terra Soft, for Playstation 3, and for Cell in general won't be known until 2007 at the earliest (when the software begins shipping), one thing is for certain: if you are one of those that has ever dreamed of creating your own supercomputing cluster out of video gaming consoles, your time has come

Here is a photo and video of my problem if it helps out anymore.

PS3%20Linux.JPG

And here is the video...

Try changing the Vertical Refresh of the screen.

It's been a LOT since I messed up deeply with linux, but if everything keeps going the same way, you can kill the xsession with ctrl+alt+backspace. Then you can log in and modify the screen properties, and startx again.

If someone has access to those FTPs for YDL I can help host the ISOs.

EDIT: I don't even have a PS3, so this isn't some scheme to get the ISOs quicker. Just a lot of bandwidth, that's all :)

HEY SDF WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU NOW?

I distinctly remember like, 12 SDF fellows claiming this was the bees knees and that Linux on PS3 would destroy all other consoles, so why are they not hosting it now that we need it. Sony fans? Failures more like. Get it (YDL) hosted plz. It appears to be quite legal, yet ain't nothin happening.

Maybe not everyone can host?

So ydl.net is down for me at the moment (seems to have gotten too busy), and still no reply on my query to them re. coupon codes. Has anyone actually managed to get it?

It never really hit me how bad the open source crowd gets sometimes until I read a recent slashdot posting about how Firefox had lost its way. I mean, I already knew about the GNOME psychos, but I kinda considered that problem to be contained. ;)

linux scares the shit out of me. I don't plan on using my PS3 as a programming box. Most likely I just want a nice wizard/ste-by-step install, then a couple of applications. Maybe email, firefox and a good media player. That'll do me
