PS4 does not support CD and SACD

Weird omission, but I've never put a CD in my PS3 so whatever. Prefer it if they did add CD support mind, if even just for random data etc.

I hope someone steps in and adds CD support. The laser can read it.

I still buy CD's. Just bought one produced by Sony as a matter of fact

I always buy my music on CD and then rip it. I have a huge music collection on my PS3 of CDs I ripped onto it, use some of it on the games that allow you to have custom soundtracks, even.

And I have a collection of about 70 PSX games on disc as well, I loved being able to play them on my PS3, and hated that I had to keep my old PS2 around to play my PS2 disc collection as well. I had thought that with a PS4, I would at least be able to play all my old PSX and PS2 titles, even if I'd lose my comparatively smaller PS3 collection.

I came away from Sony's conference really hyped, but all this news has been steadily deflating my excitement level.

Does that mean no PS1 BC either?

PS1 BC might still be there

Interesting quote from Yoshida. But if the PS4 can't read the discs this would probably only apply to PSN titles.
Or the PS4 can indeed read CDs if they are from PS1 games but for whatever reason can't read audio-CDs which sounds strangely artificial. Still very puzzling.

PS1 can be emulated completely in software and the PS4 is certainly powerful enough to do that. I don't see how PS1 BC could in any way negatively impact the design of the PS4.

yeah man, i don't know what to make of this...if its PSN only PSX titles, that's shit. hope that's not the case.

Can't see why that should be something mandatory for a console. I find CD switching to be annoying anyway. I usually only use any CD once - to rip the content.

(in case someone sees a problem in that - this is perfectly legal in my country, just like downloading any audio or video material for own use)

How could you not play CDs and SACDs? I mean all I have to do is download software for my computer and it can automatically play back any disc format. This is quite strange, but not a dealbreaker. Maybe it still supports DVD Audio :D

. . . Those are interesting choices. And here I'm thinking of Mega Man Legend or Lunar (unless Victor Ireland pulls a miracle.)

That's why I feel BC is so important. To lose access to some treasured and great games is incredibly upsetting. I no longer have a PS1 and I haven't been able to source a fully functioning one for some time.

These are games no-one thinks of porting or can't be ported due to licensing issues or the publisher/developer in question has long since gone bust.

To now learn they are abandoning BC for PS1 titles is very upsetting.

PS1 BC might still be there

I sincerely hope so.

If they took out PS3 BC there's no way they'd bother with PS1/PS2 BC. It's a strange choice but one that won't affect me personally.

Uuuuh. And who's the guy who's twitter qoute you linked OP?

The console is out this november/december. My reply to this goes a little something like this : "yeah yeah sure, i'll believe it when i see it".

Not a surprise. However, I was really angry when the PS3 'lost' SACD. When I got my launch PS3 I also started buying SACD's. Eventually I had around thirty or so. Then my PS3 died and I got a new one. But it no longer had SACD. I eventually bought a Blu-ray player which also supported SACD. But it really pissed me off that Sony dropped the format on the PS3. They convinced me that SACD was good (multi-channel music is fantastic) then they kicked me in the balls.

Right now though the PS4 seems fine. BC is irrelevant to me as I have a PSOne, PSTwo and PS3.

MKV support?

This is pretty strange, but whatever I guess. Won't affect me in the least with external HDDs and streaming from my PC.

This system gets shittier and shittier by the day.
*eye roll*

It probably is missing the actual red laser.

Ps3 optical read head actually had three separate lasers in the can, two red and one blue. The reds for CD and DVD of course. Different wavelengths I believe.

Or maybe they just didn't want to license it.

RIP custom soundtracks maybe unless it's probably through a different transfer method needlessly adding steps but that's okay.
What? This has no effect on custom soundtracks whatsoever. Transfer music to PS4 using USB or the media server. It's not like you and 99% of the population don't already have your music ripped on your computer already. Don't see the needless extra steps here.

I honestly didn't even know the PS3 could rip CD's, and I don't think most people are transferring music to their PS3/PS4 by ripping from a CD.

btw, I guess this rules out PS1 backwards compatibility being done by hardware. I suppose they don't mind a lot of extra streaming.

If the drive is completely incapable of reading CDs then even if they're streaming you won't be using a disc. Which means one of two things. Either you get access to the entire library with a PS+ account or they expect you to double dip on any PS1 games you already own on disc via PS1 Classics store purchases. After all there would be no way for the machine to verify a valid game disc at all.

Don't CDs and DVDs use the same color laser? Does the thing not support reading DVDs either? Would be ridiculous if so.

I mean I realize music CD's are a relic from the stone age now but still, that seems odd. I imagine there are a few people who might want to use their PS4 to play some of their CD's they still have lying around...

Not really a major thing though just seems weird.

Your physical PS1/2/3 disks and PSN downloads will not be recognized on the PS4.
Any "BC" will come from streaming/re-downloading.

Prepare to repurchase!

end of an era

I liked ripping the CDs I get bundled with certain games and Limited Editions to the PS3, so this will certainly be a missed feature. Not terribly, though.

There is a PS1 software emulator on the PSp, Vita, PS3 and PS2 slim. Do people here really think there wont be one on PS4?

Come on people!

I buy CDs and rip them to my PS3 all the time. No joke.

Now I'll have to rip the to my PC, then transfer them to my PS4. Isn't the biggest of deals, but I don't get removing the support.

This is a disappointment, I've just got my PS3 hooked up to my AV receiver and I never needed a CD player because PS3 did it all, even played them a higher frequencies, awesome CD support
and CD's are still the superior sound which people with real audio equipment use (We can hear the compression)
perhaps PS4 doesn't even support music altogether?
Anyway looks like my PS3 is the centralhub still even when the PS4 arrives.

If PS4 supports FLAC playback I won't mind too much.

and where do i put the physical PS1 disk in my Vita?
You have to REPURCHASE that PS1 game, even if you're hold the disk in your hand.

(I was real careful about typos on "DISK" on those sentences)

all these inane vinyl, cassette, 8-track replies, ugh...can you play Um Jammer Lammy off a record?

if you can, please PM me how much you want, that's cool as fuck

Licence it, from who, themselves? CD is a Sony format, it's surprising that they chose not to include it tbh.

is it? i always forget this, that's pretty crazy though

The PS4 will not have any sort of native backwards compatibility.
But they will have PS1, PS2, PS3, PSM BC using Gaikai but seems that not at launch.
Yoshida said that they are exploring to support emulation in the future too (but I assume that for PS1 and PS2).
