PS4 does not support CD and SACD

Uh, you can still play PS1 disc games on the PS3. That is more than can be said of any of the other console manufacturers and support for games from two (soon to be three) generations ago.

The other console manufacturers actually have reasons for not adding BC support. Sony is saving what? $1 per console with this? Probably even less.

Lack of CD support is surprising but not necessary. But we're in 2013 now. The last CD I bought was ripped to my PC, uploaded to cloud and my NAS. From there I could pull the songs over to the PS3 from the visible app in the music xmb.

If that's too crazy for you, put your mp3's on a flash drive and plug that into the PS4. Copy the files and be done with it.

But I can play CDs on my new Blu-ray player!

I hope they change their minds.

I hope so, too. I don't really play music CDs all that often, but it would be nice to have the ability to rip a CD directly to the PS4's hard drive. Sure, you could rip to a PC and then use a USB flash drive or DLNA to transfer the files over, but direct ripping on the PS4 itself would be easier and more convenient for some people.

What I'm really concerned about, though, is...

Don't care about audio CDs but my PS1 games. =\

That's probably the biggest loss here. If the system cannot read compact discs at all, then that means PS1 disc games cannot be used, along with a portion of the PS2 library as well.

It's unclear whether they're going to ever offer native backward compatibility for PS1 & PS2, or if these games would only be playable by streaming, but this is bad news no matter which method they use. Some people figure that if they go with streaming, then you could still insert your physical disc so that the system can identify the game (proving that you own it), and subsequently stream that game using Gaikai. If the system is incapable of recognizing your PS1 or PS2 CDs, then this could be a big problem.

So next-gen games with Special/Limited/Whatever Editions won't come with soundtrack cd's on PS4? And I thought this generation was bad...

lol not even mad...
CD's lol
I'm apple's bitch.. I haven't bought a "CD" in a long time
music just makes sense as digital...The last game I play on PS3 with music was FF13-2 but I just used my computer. so...plus streaming it to your console is so easy and awesome.

I'm sure they will let you stream your CDs thru Gaikai for a premium.

Has that been played out yet? I'm sure it has.

Edit: When was the last time you even put an audio CD in a game console? It was neat in the PS1, but I haven't put a an audio CD in any console since.

A modern 'multi-media' system and you can't rip CD's to it? I've ripped tons of CD's to my PS3, it has been a very useful feature.

I really do hope they change their mind on this.

Yeah I'm sure the PS3 was the go-to machine for audiophiles looking for a high quality CD player.

Won't be missed, and if it can save Sony a few dollars, it's fine by me.

I wish the PS4 didn't have an optical drive at all. Maybe the slim version will finally get rid of it..

Not surprising. If Apple can do it and there system are intended for multimedia, so can a gaming device. Barely anyone uses it as it is, let alone within a few years.

WHAT THE FUCK? This has to be nonsense. Does not even make any kind of sense. The drives are inherently compatible by design.

You gonna share with us that unlimited 1Gbps fibre optic broadband line you're using to get your PS4 games downloaded over to your system?

Yeah, I didn't think so. Have a little empathy for a majority of your US countrymen still stuck on mediocre 3Mb or less DSL/Cable services with horrible caps.

Also, back on topic, that's strange as standard bluray reader drives sold right now are all combo drives by definition; they support all manner of formats from CD ROMs/DVD ROMs to BD ROMs.

Strangely enough, I went from having red, hot capless Asian internet to US internet in the last year and I don't notice a difference at all. I have good old 29.99 cheapest Optimum internet and I downloaded Infamous 2 the other day in about an hour and 25 minutes. I wonder wtf it would be if FIOS was available to me. I actually watched the download and thought "gaf would love this" lol. Seriously, if you live out in the middle of no where..what can I say..I do not give a fuck about other people's speeds or caps lol.

Nice. Real fucking nice. Hope you get hit by hailstone in the balls.

This must be a mistake...exactly what are they saving by not including CD support, since the hardware and software are already there? How is no CD support when you already have all the hardware in place save Sony money?
I do not gve a crap about CD's but this is weird. I'd much rather have Sony discontinue analog inputs in the PS4.

But if the PS4 is so computer-like, couldn't you just swap in a new BD drive? :B

...Yea this is sorta lame, but my fat PS2 still plays my PS1 & PS2 games [most anyways], so no real issue with that.

Now the real question is, will the DVD reading capabilities be region-locked!? o.O

Then when you get a PS4, go ahead and open yours up and rip the optical drive out. That way you'll never be offered an option to purchase a non-digital copy.

No need to do that. It can just collect dust. Assuming I'm dumb enough to be an early adopter..(I never day one consoles)

This saddens me a bit. My PS3 is the only device here at home that can read CDs. And even though I don't use it much I still use it sometimes... :(

Good, they should focus thier limited time and money on more important features. Should we get mad it doesnt play vinyl too?

Ipads dont play music cd's either, and people love those things

They are absolutely not compatible by design. The optics are different. BluRay uses a completely different lens than CD and needs a complicated multiple lens assembly for compatibility.

Lack of CD support is so weird, I just don't understand it.

The most important thing to realise is that if this is true, then backward compatibility with PS1 games is immediately ruled out.

You're worrying me, Sony...

It isn't backwards compatible with anything.

Is this news?
