PS4-Gaf: review your launch titles

Resogun 10/10
NFS: Rivals 9/10
NBA 2k14 9/10
Killzone 8.5/10

only had 360 last gen, so i'm digging what sony is offering. killzone multiplayer is great just lacks lobbies, chat.

Resogun:10 (because its free and there is not reason you shouldn't get it)

Battlefield 4 multiplayer: i cant rate because its broken but has the potential to be a 10 if your a fan of the series on console

Battlefield 4 single player: 4 the prettiest garbage ever

Killzone singleplayer: 6.5 great visuals and tons of fun but the level design holds it back big time. can be very frustrating to find your way around and has some really boring parts.

Killzone mulitplayer 8.5 tons of fun.

Need for speed: 8 great visuals, great sense of speed. tons of fun but i wish it had interior views

FIFA: 8 same as usual. reliably fun but not a huge upgrade. visuals are nice but not a showcase

Killzone-8 (could go up once I spend more time with MP). Half of SP is the best FPS in years but some of the chapters show typical launch rush.

Knack-7 Big surprise how much I'm liking it. Simple and repitive but it has charm and is a nice break up from M rated madness

BF4-0 Fucking unplayable bullshit

I'm from europe and so will be getting my ps4 at launch next week. Just wanted to ask some advice on the launch titles.

So far I'll be buying Fifa 14, Need for speed rivals and a shooter and really not sure which one to get.

From people who have played both is killzone or bf4 the better game. kinda want one that will last a while and I want to play multiplayer a lot

I'm assuming BF4 should be working by the 29th (so help me God if it's not), so go with that. The campaign probably isn't as good as Killzone's, but that one's already weak. BF4 multiplayer will be incredible though.

Well, AC4 and COD are 1080p console exclusives :)
Don't understand why people love AC4. It looks like the same boring shit to me, but I haven't gotten to the ship combat, maybe that's what's fun?

Not everyone played brotherhood, revolutions and 3. I played 1 briefly and that sucked. Played through 2 and that was great. Never played the other ones.

I adjusted the title to encourage actual discussion and to reflect that note in the FAQ Forum which clearly states:

After a few pages if the ongoing content is primarily just rankings or lists with no elaboration, the thread has to be locked :((((

Nooooooo :P

Im quite enjoying reading through some of the elaborated views from the games, good to get Gafs opinions, altho just plain Rankings serves little context :)

Guess I'll go in order of time played so far (aka my favorites to okay):

1.) Knack - 9/10. My favorite game so far on the PS4. Bought it on a whim with the target B2G1 sale, and so glad I did. It has such a simple execution in stage and gameplay, but is very challenging, especially after you beat the game and
unlock time attack and arena mode. Nothing keeps me entertained more than attempting to best my own score and rank up leaderboards.
. So far I can't tear myself away from playing the game, I think I log between 2-3 hours a day playing.

2.) Killzone Shadowfall - 8/10. Never played a killzone game before, but it was definitely worth the day one purchase. Single player has been good, was able to learn the aiming ropes before graduating myself to MP and having a blast.

3.) Resogun - 8/10. My remote play bathroom game :) Graphics looks gorgeous, gameplay is the same, love the flow each map. Took some time to get used to but now I feel much more comfortable in playing, and will start trying to work my way up the leaderboards.

4.) NFS Rivals - 8/10. Game looks amazing, takes me back to when I played NFS hot pursuit. Enjoyed playing an hour so far as cop, ramming other racers to start pursuits and watching them immediately quit the game.

5.) Warframe - 7.5/10. Didn't care for the PC version too much, but something about it on the PS4 gets me to play from time to time. Movement seems suited to controller play for some reason I guess :)

6.) DC Universe online - 5.5/10. I knew there was a reason why I stopped playing the PC version and the PS3 version, just not the type of game I want to play on any system. Customization is nice, but the gameplay has me yawning.

Not everyone played brotherhood, revolutions and 3. I played 1 briefly and that sucked. Played through 2 and that was great. Never played the other ones.
I only played AC2, and it's still the same boring crap to me, even though I played AC2 4 years ago?

AC-8
NFS-8
Lego-8

All pretty good but not great games.

Knack-6
Killzone-6

Pretty mediocre games with nice visuals. Fans of the genre might enjoy em more than I did. I personally think both games are average

Madden-4
Injustice-4

Neither of these are bad games but neither are worth a next gen upgrade either. You probably own something that can play these games at the same level visually AND at a lower price.

Resogun-9

The stand out at launch, even if it's short it does everything else right. Every PS4 should and probably will play.

Killzone - 6, I am hating the campaign and no one to play with online. All my work friends, and friends friends bought Ghosts or BF4.

Resogun - 8, I want to be good but it's hard. Love the music though.

Contrast - 4, I know why this game is free. No one would have ever bought this for 15 bucks.

Warframe - 4, plays worse on the PS4 than it did on my PC.

Flower - 7, beat it once and I'm not doing it again. Wife likes it.

Sound Scapes - 7, already played the hell out of it on my Vita.

I really want to buy NBA 2k14 but I just dunno.

If you need friends for Killzone, visit the Killzone Multiplayer thread. People are already setting up GAF vs GAF matches. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=717455

Unfortunately I haven't been able to play as much as I'd like this week, but with the short amount of time with each game, here we go:

ACIV: 9/10
Most played game so far. This game looks amazing- and I was even impressed before the 1080p patch. Overall I just like this so much more than ACIII, even though I don't prefer the setting as much as past games.

Flower: 9/10
I played this game to 100% completion on the PS3. Replaying it has been fantastic... and the upscaled graphics and FPS really benefit the game. Just an overall beautiful experience- and I hope people playing it for the first time are enjoying it. I wish they could have added something new to this version (a snow level is something fans of Flower talked about back upon initial release), but since TGC wasn't responsible for this upgrade I didn't really have expectations for that, to be honest.

Killzone (single player): 8/10
Lovely looking game, wonderful art direction, but the story is kind of 'meh' so far. Didn't enjoy single player for KZ2, didn't bother with KZ3, but I'm enjoying this one. I have gotten killed a few times just examining the details in the scenery. :p Haven't played MP yet, but I suck at MP FPS games, so I'll probably jump into a few games drunkenly this weekend.

Resogun: 8/10
This game takes me back to the 8 & 16bit days, but wow is it stunning to look at. I won't claim to be that good with twin-stick shooters, but I find myself picking up and playing this game a lot. Housemarque did a fabulous job.

Contrast: 8/10
Love the art direction and the overall pace of this game. Very clever in design and a wonderful freebee for +ers. Makes me want a new (good) City of Lost Children game really bad. I want more games like this. With Sony's dedication to indie developers this gen, I don't think I'll be disappointed.

Knack: 7.5/10
This game took a beating with reviewers, but I'm having a lot of fun with it. My daughter loves it, so I definitely need a second controller to co-op with her. :) It can be a bit brutal at times and the overall art direction isn't really to my liking, but this game reminds me of something that would have been on the PS1 (not referencing graphics, of course).

Madden 25: 5/10
I expected this, but hotdamn is EA/Tiberon garbage with this franchise. I've managed to have some fun all things considered, but some of the glitches have changed the course of a game. In one instance I clearly caught a pass, my receiver took about 5 steps before going out of bounds, had possession of the ball, and somehow it was called "Incomplete". It would not let me challenge it. Other than a few superstars (like Adrian Peterson), many of the players look like dogshit. Any white guy with long hair is laughably bad. MN's Brian Robison looks like he has blonde dreadlocks (he has a brunette ponytail IRL). Playing in 'Broadcast Mode' makes the game look a bit better, but yeah.

Still have yet to play BF4 and NFS:Rivals.

Resogun : 10/10 : I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but for what it's worth, this is my favorite side scrolling shmup ever. It deceptively deep, with an amazing sense of challenge that never felt too brutal nor too forgiving. That difficult balance has kept me coming back more and more with the knowledge that I can improve with enough practice and effort. With the range of ships, levels, difficulties, and challenges, it has a ton of replay value.

Killzone : 4/10 : This game isn't for me. I can sort of see the appeal, but to me it feels slow, clunky, and messy. Oh, and I'm strictly talking about multiplayer. I barely touched the campaign. Ended up selling my copy on Amazon.

Battlefield 4 : I'll let you know when the game is actually playable.

So far:

Knack - 6/10 - I didn't find the game horrible like reviewers said. I maybe even enjoyed it a bit. This was a 90s style video game made in 2013. For better or worse. Take that as you will.

Killzone - 7/10 - It's very...boring. The shooting is fine, the gameplay is fine, the game looks gorgeous. I just don't have much motivation to play the game.

Resogun - 9/10 - This game is quite addicting. It's simple, but challenging and seemingly very difficult to really master. It really feels like it could be the Geometry Wars of this generation.

Killzone: Shadowfall - 7/10 (I've only played some single player and mostly don't care for shooters)
Knack - 7.5/10
Resogun - 9.5/10 (I don't play many shoot-em-up's but good god those effects)
Contrast - 6/10 (although I haven't played much of it)

Need For Speed Rivals - 9/10 Not on my radar at all leading up to launch, but absolutely loving this game. Once it became clear that Killzone was, well, definitely a Killzone game, I didn't open it and traded for this. Sooo happy I did. I'm not a racing game guy, but this game is just rad. Whenever I turn on the system, I just naturally want to fire this game up, and it's always hard to turn off. Just.one.more.event. The AllDrive stuff really adds some great emergent situations to a fun game where it feels like you are always making progress.

Resogun - 8/10 Great effects, fun arcade style game. Definitely challenging. I expected a bit more from it, but it's still a good game.

Battlefield 4 - 1/10 It's just plain broken, top to bottom. Single player and multiplayer are utterly broken. Inexcusable. It's easy to see the potential when it does briefly work and it's a great looking game, but I've never been so disgusted at the state of a released game. Everyone who had anything to do with this game being allowed to be released in this state should be ashamed, that includes Dice, EA, and Sony for allowing this to pass cert.

AC4 - Haven't even unwrapped it yet. It's actually my most anticipated launch title so I'm kinda saving it until after my spastic rush to try everything else first.

Live from Playstation app - Ok, this isn't a "launch title", but I need to mention it because it's awesome. This is the first time a Sony console has had any feeling of "community" or "connectedness" for me. PS3 felt like an isolated system of menus, I never felt like I was on a system that was connected to other players in any way. This app alone goes a long way towards changing that for me. I don't sit there for hours watching people stream, but it's so fun to be able to pop in and see if there are any interesting channels, and it's gonna be a great way to preview games I'm on the fence about. I love that this exists and that it's not tucked away.

Knack 7.5/10

Solid game with tight controls and charming visual. Despite its casual look, this game is very challenging. Kanck can't take too many hits and some enemies can straight up 1-hit him so dodging attacks and dealing damage requires is the key.

Resogun 10/10

Best PS4 launch game period. It's easy just to blast through a level but rescuing all human in a stage can be really difficult and frustrating. Most of the time you need to kill glowing green enemies to free a human but occasionally you need to meet certain hidden requirement (eg. maintaining high multiply) to save them.

If I had to use a number scheme:

NFS: Rivals - 9/10. The game is seriously amazing fun. Forza 3, GT3, GT4, and NFS: HP(Gen 7 version) are the only racing games that I've ever had as much fun with as I am with this game. I'll keep this short since there are plenty of real reviews of games out there, but so far I only have two minor gripes. I wish there were more variety of car makes but that's how these games go. Also, the rubberbanding AI is aggravating. There are times when a car really can't catch up to you when you get a good lead, but if you crash in a race, the other races usually just mosey along at 60mph waiting on you to catch up before instantly hitting 200+. The game has a great sense of speed and seems responsive enough even at 30 fps, but sometimes there are dips when the action is heavy and there are a lot of dirt particles, which is no good.

NBA2k14 - 8.5/10. Everyone knows the gameplay is great. Still a medium bar for entry with a very high skill cap. The career mode has some cheesy cutscenes, with no voice acting, which is a bummer. Also, some of the animations are still janky. When the animations get smoother, this will be one BEAUTIFUL game.

Battlefield 4 Singleplayer - 7/10. I'm waiting for the MP to leave Beta before I even begin to get into it. The campaing is typical action movie FPS stuff, but hey, I like that. I'm a fan of the medal system in the campaign missions also. A point was taken away because the game froze on 2 different occasions near the end of missions, forcing me to hard restart my PS4.

Resogun - 9.5/10. This would be a 10/10 if there were more content in the game, and there were split screen multiplayer mode. Dead Nation and Super Stardust got DLC, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

Flower - 9/10 for newcomers, 7.5/10 for Flower veterans. The 1080p60 and improved gyro controls make all the difference in the world, as do the slightly updated effects/grass models. Flower still evokes the same emotions years later, and the game is even more breathtaking. I wish there was some sort of additional content for this game since it's just a port of a 5 year old game.

Sound Shapes - 8/10 for newcomers, 6.5 for veterans. The 1080p60 doesn't make that big of a difference on here, and it's pretty much the same game if you've already played it.

I also have AC IV, Contrast, Killzone: SF and FIFA(haven't played Career much), but haven't played them enough to give honest impressions. FIFA and Killzone are both looking like 7s at this point from me though.

Lol at these people with 10 games at launch. You guys are the same ones who complain about $5 for online play.

That's awful general of you. Also, for many of us Resogun, Contrast, Flower and Sound Shapes are free, and some of the cross gen games had $10 upgrades. I have a ton of games b/c I play a ton of games while my gf is out of town. I also sub to Live/PS+/FFXIV/WoW with no complaints, so yeah......

Resogun - 9/10
Simply one of the best shooters I've played. Very replayable and there's a lot of depth to it. Far better than Super Stardust. I do wish there were more game modes...I long for something to surpass the beauty and simplicity of Geometry Wars 2's Pacifism mode.

Assassin's Creed IV - 9/10
I'm a little too early to give it such high marks, but so far, this is all I want Assassin's Creed to be. The sense of adventure and freedom when sailing the seas is fantastic. Little time is spent on the present day, which is a welcome change. So far, if this holds up, this may surpass Brotherhood as the best Assassin's Creed.

Killzone - 8/10
Beautiful title and probably the best showcase for the system's abilities. The game looks incredible, and more importantly, it controls like a dream. I have never played a shooter on console where I felt so in control of my aim...and all of this without any aim assist whatsoever! Singleplayer is fun and somewhat open to experimentation, though the alarm system gets pretty annoying at times. Multiplayer feels great being nearly 60fps and I do enjoy what I've played of it, but I don't really see myself playing any more of it as I prefer competitive gaming on the PC.

Contrast gets a very low score from me

I've had to give up on it because of the bugs

It's crapped out on me twice with my character snagged on scenery or stuck with a box on her head

Resogun - 9
Killzone (single player) - 7
Knack - 7.5
NBA 2K14 - 7
Need for Speed: Rivals - 6
Battlefield 4 - 1

Haven't touched Killzone MP yet so I need to get on that. BF4 gets 1 point just for not burning my house down but otherwise, the game is a broken mess.

Resogun 7/10 : fun for short bursts, it is what it is
Killzone : Singleplayer is hot garbage 5/10, Multplayer 9/10 fun as hell
NBA2k: 10/10 GOAT
FIFA: 9/10 Awesome as always

I don't like grades/scores. I think it's a very very shallow way to encapsulate an experience. So I'll use my words:

Killzone: I'm having a pretty good time with killzone. It's absolutely gorgeous although I've run into areas with very bland textures. Multiplayer was fun but I'm waiting to finish single player before I dive into it heavily. Worth the purchase on the tech alone. I mean this is launch...it's ok to buy some eye candy to show off your baby.

Assassins Creed 4: I'm only 2 hours in but so far the framerate is absolutely rock solid. The textures look last gen but whatever it's a very very fun game and doesn't suffer from the rampant slowdown I got on AC2 on PS3. I'll be diving into this next.

Sound Shapes: Fantastic. Simple fun and cross buy needs to blow up more. I own this on vita so I downloaded it just cause.

Trine2: Gorgeous, smooth and interesting. Haven't invested enough time to it to really go deeper.

Killzone - 7/10
Resogun - 7.5/10
Contrast - 6/10
Knack - 6.5/10
BF4 - 0/10 because it is basically unplayable at this point

I like the launch lineup. Nothing insanely good, but all very solid launch titles.

Killzone Shadow Fall - 7/10: The campaign is incredibly boring. It feels like more of a chore than anything. The MP on the other hand is pretty cool with all of the match customization and having all the weapons unlocked.

Resogun - 8.5/10: Its like a modern day arcade game. I can invasion myself wasting 100's of quarters on this game. Simple, addicting, and absolutely gorgeous as well. Probably my favorite launch title that I have played.

Contrast - 5/10: Not very fun. Interesting concept with a unique art style but that doesn't make it a good game. Wasted potential.

Also, and I know this is going to sound like console fanboy speak but hear me out: Those of you with subpar KillZone experiences, JOIN OUR GAF PARTIES. Seriously. I almost wrote the game off because the multiplayer wasn't as fun as I'd anticipated, but when I partied up and started just wrecking teams left and right the game began clicking. It is so much damn fun. I really think you can't adequately assess the quality of the game without having first experienced a few solid hours of party play. The single player is ho-hum, I'll give you that... but the multiplayer, when played with the right people, is fantastic.

Resogun - 8 out of 10. Solid game.
Killzone - 6 out of 10. Pretty game, but bland as hell in both single and multi
Knack - 4 out of 10. Just a terrible game. Already sold it on Amazon
Madden - 5 out of 10. EA didn't even pretend they were making a next gen game. Sold also.
Lego Marvel - 8.5 out of 10. Probably the best game I've played on PS4
Contrast - 4 out of 10. Broken game with a terrible framerate.
Assassins Creed - 8 out of 10. Fun and beautiful game, especially after the latest patch

Haven't played nearly enough of these titles yet.. But early impressions are:

Killzone: 7/10. Fairly enjoyable SP, not really that engaging though. Gorgeous as is known. And haven't got around to the MP yet.

AC4: 9/10 easily. Really loving my time with it so far. I hadn't personally played a good collectathon-type game in many, many moons. So this is scratching an itch for me, and the gameplay is stellar to boot.

Resogun: 10/10. Flawless. Super easy to pick up and play, rack up some scores on the leaderboards, challenge yourself and unlock higher difficulties. I found myself repeating levels many many times, and not from frustration, but from the challenge and desire to succeed. Great game!

Contrast: 4/10. Low score, but it has an excellent *theme*... The shadowplay is a wonderful concept. Music is great. Setting is very intriguing. Camera and character models leave much to be desired though. And the voice acting is rather sub-par. Found myself getting rather bored with it, tbh. But I commend the developers for what they were trying to do!

Killzone: SP: blech. Have to try Multiplayer still.
Knack: Blech x 2. Pretty repetitive.
Flower: Fantastic... but I already played it a couple years ago. It's having its intended effect on me, since it relaxes my frustration from such a lackluster launch.

Those AC4 reviews/impressions! I am really close to ordering but have not played much of the series at all in the past (played minimal amounts of 2 & even less of 3).

So for those that have it:
1. How much of the gameplay Is the sea battles, as they look really good in gameplay vids?
2. Are there heaps of "tail this dude for 10 minutes" type missions?
3. With the collectibles, are there heaps of them and does it matter if you don't do it get into this side of the game (like is it critical for upgrades later on in the game and stuff)?

Resogun: 8/10
Flower: 8/10
Sound Shapes: 7/10
Warframe: 5/10
Contrast: 5/10

These could all change dramatically, as I haven't played anything all that much just yet. I wish I could chime in about some of the bigger retail games, but I'm trying to hold off on buying anything until after the holidays/when there's a great deal.

Ok right now these are my reviews for the games I own.

KZ:SF: 9/10. Not surprising since ive always liked the KZ series when everyone has hated it, especially KZ2/3. Visual masterpiece, good story, good controls but they really throw you to the wolves in the beginning of the game.

Knack: 7/10. Not quite worth the $60 but good clean fun, especially if you want to play the entire game with a loved one/friend.

NFS:R: 8/10. My first NFS since Underground and I'm quite enjoying it. I wish it had more down to earth cars instead of supercars but whatever, it really itches the racer in me regardless.

AC4: 8.5/10 Best AC since AC2 IMO (hated AC3), looks absolutely gorgeous in 1080p and makes you want to visit the Caribbean in real life.

NBA2K14: 8/10 2k are gods of sporting game visuals. Every one of the Knicks look exactly like themselves. Its pretty easy to pick up and play but VERY VERY hard to master.

Resogun: 8/10 Its really a good game but its very short and quite simple (and free).

Killzone 8/10
Resogun 9/10

Tearaway, GT6, and my backlog will be keeping me busy so I'm not sure when I'll be buying another game. Possibly Knack if I can get it cheap.

Killzone: Haven't played enough yet.
Warframe: Great, if a little buggy.
Knack: Bad, boring, barren.
Resogun: Fantastic.

You have to get past the first 90 minutes or two hours of AC4 before it really reveals itself. Once you get the keys to your own ship and realize there's a whole world with a TON of things to do, that's when the game really begins.

Really surprised by the ACIV scores. How story heavy is it? Do I need to play the previous games in the series to get it?

Also, Knack seems to be better than expected.

Top Bottom
