PS4-Gaf: review your launch titles

I own a few, but only have played like 3 so far.

Resogun - Great! Save the last humans. Glad PSN plus can get it into the hands of people that might not have played it. Great visuals, fun and addictive.
NBA 2k14 - Great! Hadn't played a 2k game in a while. Great visuals and outstanding presentation.
Killzone - Good. Huge fan of the series. Great visuals/sound. Love the controller touches. Haven't touched the MP yet. Vita game has the better campaign so far. Killzone 2 is still the god of the Zones.

NFS Rivals, AC4, BF4 and Marvel super heroes are still sealed lol

Killzone - Good
I'm really digging the slower pacing in comparison to the others in the series. I haven't finished it yet nor have I touched mulitplayer, so this could go up or down.

Contrast 0/10
- Horrible voice acting and writing.
- Terrible controls and game feel, combined with amateurish level design - feels like a student project.
- Cheesy art direction.
- Unsatisfying puzzles and conclusion.
- For me this is a big sore spot in the PS4 launch.

Completely agree. Jesus this game is terrible. I played a small bit at the Sony Store pre-launch, but damn is this a piece of shit. The ONLY redeeming factor is it's premise, that's it. Quite possibly the most annoying child and voice actor in all of gaming. The dialog feels like they just grabbed random related lines and pieced them together instead of actually writing a script or story. Controls are loose and sloppy, design is amateurish as you say, animation is terrible.

Got it for free and it's still a piece of shit, even at that price.

Unfortunately, this describes the majority of indies. And agreed about the price. I regret playing it for free because it was a waste of my time.

Resogun - great.
Killzone - good, only on chapter 5 but a decent shooter thus far
Knack - garbage, sold it already

Killzone: Shadowfall - 8/10 - Enjoyed this more than expected. Finished the campaign and played a bit of multiplayer. Absolutely gorgeous game, I had to pick my jaw off the floor a few times. Some sections of gameplay were tedious/frustrating but they were over quick enough. Overall I really liked it and plan to continue playing multiplayer.

Knack - 7/10 - Critics were very harsh on this one. I'm about 2/3 through the game and it's way better than they gave it credit for. Combat is simplistic but has kept me entertained so far. Very good image quality but the art isn't amazing and I've experienced some pretty gross frame drops. Story is kinda bad. But it's still fun to play!

Resogun - 9/10 - Awesome game all around! Accomplishes precisely what it wanted to. Crazy fun. My only complaint is that all the levels look very similar. I miss the distinct worlds from Super Stardust.

I'm looking forward to picking up AC4 next, seems to be very highly regarded.

Resogun: 10/10. Outstanding gameplay, astounding visuals, just a fantastic audio visual experience. The way the voxels fly about and the scenery degrades as the mayhem unfolds is something to be seen.

Killzone Shadow Fall: 8/10. Poorly paced single-player campaign, but in my opinion the most jaw droopingly gorgeous graphics I've seen in life in some sections. Multiplayer elevates the score, classic Killzone chaos.

Knack: 7/10. It clearly could have used a couple more months for polish. With that said, along with Resogun is the most pure classic gaming experience of the launch titles. It tethers on repetitive at times, but it's responsive and precise controls, coupled with a good challenge even on Normal difficulty made me come back a lot. The story is simple, but the voice acting is actually quite good and entertaining.

It should be noted that the graphics are really good, impressive even - its' just the presentation that won't do any favors. As a trained animator, I can say that at moments it did give glimpses of what playing a Pixar/Dreamworks animation movie would look like. Brief moments, but they're there. It looks like it's using global illumination, it makes everything seem so palpable and solid. Shame the media missed the point on this game. Or perhaps I'm easily pleased.

Battlefield 4: 0/10. Utterly broken. Played the SP campaign for hours, only for it to be erased without notice. Can't connect to Conquest games. Fucking EA should have put a BETA sticker on the case.

Flower: 9/10. It's still Flower, but more beautiful and with better controls. Unique experience that should be seen by everybody.

Killzone Shadow Fall: Single player is great. Don't understand the hate. Can't believe some people are saying it tries too hard to be CoD...uhh, what? The game borrows a lot of elements from Batman, BioShock, Goldeneye, etc....loved that they switched up the gameplay so much. Was a breath of fresh air in comparison to the other titles in the series.

Score: 9/10. Good single player. Amazing multiplayer.

Knack - Haven't played much, but so far it seems like a well put together old-school action game.

Score: 7/10 - Good fun, but not mind blowing and can get repetitive.

Killzone: 7/10; I'm enjoying the campaign thus far (I'm at Chapter 7 right now) but there are parts that are just rather boring. These are balanced out by parts that are absolutely brilliant, and the multiplayer's a blast as well.

AC4: 8.5/10; This is a lot of fun and probably the first AssCreed game to really grab me. I used to be put off by the fact that each game's protagonist was more of a superhero than an assassin (outright combat vs. stealthy killing), but it doesn't bother me this time around because pirates are wonderful. Still suffers a bit from the whole icon overdose thing open-world Ubisoft games love to do, but it's a ton of fun in spite of it.

NFS Rivals: 8.5/10; Driving around the map is really enjoyable, and I love the way multiplayer is seamlessly integrated into single-player. I only wish there were a way to set up bona fide online races.

Resogun: 9/10; Hugely addicting and probably the most mechanically sound game of launch, Resogun is really fun and really pretty. The fact that the structure of each round is a bit more complex than other shooters (SSD, Geometry Wars) only makes it better.

BF4 - 0 (can we go negative?)
NFS:R - 9
Resogun - 7 -- I can see it is objectively good, but just not my thing these days

I bought Knack but haven't played it yet

Killzone gets a solid C. I really enjoyed my time with it. In fact Marathon'd through the game on launch day. But I haven't gone back since.

Fifa 14 S+ for Ultimate Team alone+streaming = fun times

NFS gets an A for just being fun.

COD Ghosts-8- Singleplayer's story was terrible but it had some genuinely great missions for a COD game. Multiplayer is more of the same but the spawns are pretty bad. I still enjoy the COD series but I think I'm going to hold off from buying the infinity ward one's from now on. The singleplayer and multiplayer are better than MW3's but still nowhere near as good as the two Black Ops games.

Killzone: SF- 7- I haven't finished the singleplayer yet, but it's not very good so far. Everything feels half baked, it's open yet there are barely any ways to tackle a situation differently than just shooting guys. The story seems just as terrible as Ghosts' but in Killzone they force it down your throat almost constantly. On the 5th mission, I was forced to listen to one of the many terrible characters in the game scream at me while I was traveling from crane to crane while doing absolutely nothing.

The multiplayer seems fine so far but it's missing the chaos that Killzone 2 had. Even without vehicles Killzone 2 felt like a warzone and you could almost always tell where the action was at. In Shadowfall, I feel like I spend more time looking for enemies rather than actually fighting them.

Resogun-8- Not much to say about it except that it's extremely fun and I enjoy it just as much as geometry wars.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes - 9/10
Knack - 7/10
Killzone - 7/10
Contrast - 8/10
Resogun -
amazing.gif

AC4 - Never liked AssCreed so I'm blown away by this game, it's great
BF4 - Really good too, and would be even better if all of it worked consistently
Resogun - Cool game, not really my bag though
Contrast - Good thing it's free cause it sucks
Killzone - looks great, gameplay wise it's shit. AI is atrocious. Haven't played multi yet

Still waiting for the UK-Store to launch, not bought much on US-Store

COD: Ghosts 6/10 - Story was okay, could tell its 1080p and some good action, but wasnt "amazing" - textures were a little flat, basically can tell its a 10year Old engine..... Multiplayer, definately better looking that PS3/360 but its COD, bored of it. I am going to trade in. (Only disc based game available in UK, until tomorrow)

This comment is completely baffling to me... You are saying Ghosts looks like the original Call of Duty?

Resogun: 92/100. Hard. Beautiful. fun mechanics (boost, keepers, humans, cannons), multiplayer worked great. It feels a bit spartan with 2 bonuses, 3 ships and 5 worlds but there is enough there to play for dozens and dozens of hours.

Killzone SF: 65/100. As a newbie to KZ, I can tell you right away the story is utterly ridiculous. The game worked hard to make me roll my eyes within the first 5 minutes of the game.
seriously? human beings just gave half their planet to their hated, DEFEATED enemy because...why? And why would the helghast be shooting at people trying to LEAVE their new territory? Why were those people still there anyways? Are they just 5 minutes late and the penalty is death by shooting, or were they trying to single-handedly stand up to what I assume are hundreds of millions of Helghasts? That just doesn't make sense.

And what kind of refugees have enough weapons to threaten their host planet anyways? The story hurts my brain. So many writers need to be promoted or fired. And this is all in the first couple hours of the game.

Killzone should have a better story, better dialogue. This would have saved it. It also wouldn't hurt if the game didn't feel so generic. There are way too many outstanding FPSes out there to settle for average.

Contrast: crap. feels shitty to control. I need some mario to wash my soul.

Killzone Shadow Fall - SP 7 - MP 8
Resogun - 8.5 Due to lack of instructions, shouldn't have to read GAF to understand strategic parts of the game.
Battlefield 4 - Still sealed due to EA buggy broken jerkoff gotta make launch shit
Knack - Sealed, probably exchanging it.

Killzone - 8/10 Excellent gunplay. If it were a straight up corridor shooter, it would be one of the best shooters in the last 5 years or so. But GG deviates from their core competency and when they do the results range from okay to bad. The train level shouldn't have made the cut. The first half hour is a forgettable story and a stealth run that largely just frustrates those that just want to shoot things. It takes awhile to ramp up and the quality varies per levels. Big highs and big lows. Hopefully, it is back to the basics for their next shooter.

Battlefield 4 - 8/10. The campaign is good and the visuals are okay. It isn't a huge graphical leap from last gen. The multiplayer is excellent when the game isn't crashing. Without the numerous bugs and locked 64 player mode, this could have easily been a 9/10 game.

KZ - 7.0
BF4 - 8.0 (on modes that work)
NFS - 8.5
Resogun - 9.0
Contrast - 6.0
Flower - 8.0

The AC IV scores are making me consider purchasing once I finish my current games.

Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag - 8.5/10. Best game in the series in years, love that it's more of a pirate adventure than what they've done before. Runs great, finally the hardware matches the ambition.
Resogun - 7/10. Have not put a lot of time into it, didn't grab me outright but it's flashy fun stuff.
NBA 2k14 - 7/10. Fully enjoying the gameplay, frequently stunning character models and in game presentation but not too high on everything else, especially the virtual/real currency system that drives everything you do.

Bonus shoutout to Flower, which looks and plays significantly better than on PS3.

Resogun - 9/10 Yes, it's oldschool and won't appeal to everyone, but there's no denying that it absolutely nails what it set out to achieve. This is Defender 2014 and it is glorious. #explosions

NFS: Rivals - 8/10 Gotta go fast. Nearly gave it a miss after the 30fps outrage, and I'm so glad I didn't. If we can't have a Ridge Racer for this Playstation launch (let's be honest, we won't have a real Ridge Racer ever again), then this beautiful open world TDU-meets-Burnout-Paradise game will fill that gap nicely. FUN. That's what this is.

Trine 2 - 7/10 Charming, vibrant platforming. Bonus points for being the only PS4 launch game to support stereoscopic 3D (in full 1080p no less).

Sound Shapes - 6/10 Still the nice little game it always was, but this isn't what you bought a PS4 for. Better suited to Vita.

Contrast - 5/10 I see what you were trying to do there, and the setting is nice, but Hudson's Lost In Shadow (Wii) already went there and was less glitchy.

Killzone - haven't played enough to judge yet.

Killzone - I've not played enough of it to give it a score, but it doesn't have that 'Killzone Feel'

AC IV - I can't believe how good this looks and run, but it is the same game I've played before. (7/10)

NFS:R - At first I justs thought to myself 'this is the same game again', but the risk/reward mechnic keeps me coming back for more (when I'm actually at home to play it). Definately worth picking up. (8/10)

Res0gun - Awesome game, I would have purchased it without any qualms due to my love for Stardust (9/10)

Hmmmm ok

NBA2k13 - 7/10 digglerbucks I love the series. Been a fan since Dreamcast/Iverson days. Looks beautiful and plays wonderfully. The menu is worse than last years. I have been playing for a week and can't remember where anything is at. Limited modes stink as well. (I know next gen but I held out not getting the current gen for this)

LEGO Marvel - 7.5/10 digglerbucks It's a LEGO game. Fun stuff if your a Marvel fan but simplistic combat(even though there is a tooooon of characters Black Bolt FTW)

ACIV Black Flag - 8.5/10 digglerbucks Surprisingly the best AC game since 2 IMO. I am really enjoying this game. The water and weather look wonderful plus the ship stuff is uber fun. :)

Resogun - 6/10 digglerbucks Fun for a little bit but not really my type of game

Resogun - Buy for cheap (perfect psn+ game)

ACIV - Buy

Flower - Do not buy

Killzone - not opened yet

NBA 2k14 - not opened yet

Resogun: 10/10, fucking love it.
NFS: Rivals: 9/10, best NFS game in years, similar too, but much better than Most Wanted or Hot Pursuit.
Contrast: 5/10, I want to like it, the setting and tone are great, but it's buggy and the puzzles aren't interesting.

Killzone- 7/10 campaign, 10/10 multi so far.

Knack- 7.5/10. It's a fun platformer/beatemup. The story is TERRIBLE, and the voice acting is bizarre, but bad story is part of the territory a lot of the time in gaming.

NBA 2k 8/10- Visuals are amazing, haven't dug in I'm sure it'll go up, but at the same time, it feels like the old versions, only better looking.

Resogun- 9.5/10- Love it. Like it a lot better than stardust. The visuals are insane, point system is awesome, the co-op is great, etc. Worth even more than 15$, even though I got it free.

Killzone Shadow Fall: 7.5 - Poor story all the through. Looks pretty, though.
Call of Duty: Ghosts: 7.5 - Campaign was so-so, but extinction seems fun with friends.
Assassin's Creed IV: 8.5 - So addicting and much better than ACIII.
Resogun: 8.0 - Co-op is entertaining but it is kind of short.

Still need to play more of Contrast to make a final verdict (only one chapter in).

Just finished the campaign on Killzone Shadowfall, my first next gen game. I'd give it a solid 8.5/10 (above Killzone 3 but below 2). Chapters 4 - 7 are pretty fantastic and had they continued that run, I'd have felt inclined to go perilously close to a 10. It is truly an old school shooter campaign with plenty of heft, rock solid gameplay and a chiched but nevertheless interesting story. The graphics in chapter 4 are worth the price of admission by themselves. The only things that let the game down (and imo led many a time pressed reviewer to treat the game harsher than it deserved) were the horrible free fall sections in chapters 8 and 9. Aside from the fact that it makes no sense (you cant fall that long and not die!), they were incredibly frustrating and pure trial and error sections with little skill (and fun) involved. I hope a future patch makes these sections non interactive cutscenes (the visuals are still pretty nice). I also loved the very retro 80s sci fi soundtrack (sounds like Vangelis).

I've also played some of Resogun as a change of pace and I'd say that is a 9.5/10. Fantastic game with some truly mindblowing scenes.

On to AC4 which (somewhat surprisingly) appears to be the best next gen game on either platform. I'll be on holiday for the next two weeks but AC4 is the first thing I do when I get over the jet lag.

Assassin's Creed 4: 11
Need for Speed Rivals: 10
Killzone Shadow Fall: 11.5
Call of Duty Ghosts: 9
Battlefield 4 when working: 14
Battlefield 4 when not working and fucking up my saves and not allowing me to play my beloved Conquest: -1
Knack: haven't played it yet so 10
Resogun: 10
Contrast: -2
Warframe: 5
Blacklight Retribution: 2
Playroom: Ice T

on a 13.5 point scale

Only played CoD Ghosts so far, and I'm enjoying it. Yeah, I'll admit I'm a CoD fan but it's a decent entry into the series. 8/10.

If you like CoD, go for it (it is more of the same, as one would expect).

Only 1 launch title for me:

Killzone - haven't finished it but it's the best FPS I've played all year. And that's the SP mode. MP mode I'll play when I get better or perhaps never.

AC4 - looked at the ugliness of the game and returned it. Perhaps will get it later. I'm exhausted from AC games right now.

Res0gun - 9.5/10 - seriously this game is fucking amazing

Knack - 8.5/10 - very solid title

Only 2 I have played enough of to realistically put a score on so far. I am just getting into Warframe and I have to say, that one has me a bit surprised. Looking to be really fun.

Resogun - 9.5 A big surprise
Knack - 8 good story, outdated gameplay..
Killzone SF - 8.5 DAT multi
AC4 - 8.1 it's fun but too... empty? i just doesn't know what the f*ck is going on

Resogun is a lot of fun. I played it a good bit so far and I love it. The fact that it was free is just gravy. 8
COD Ghosts is a mixed bag. While I didn't notice any of the frame rate drops that the review sights did, I can't say that I like the game. I can see why people like it but it's too gimmicky for me. All the different modes and variations get in the way of enjoying the game. Too many choices if you can believe that. I give it a six but I don't berate those that think its a seven. It probably deserves that. 6-7
War frame has a lot of potential. I played a few missions and really enjoyed them. 8
Blacklight Retribution didn't hold my interest. 6
Battlefield 4 even with all its faults is my favorite so far. Just vanilla maps and game modes still had made for a great game. I can't wait till they get all the different game mode up proper. 9
I still have to check out Shadowfall and Contrast.

This is the first playstation console i fully own.

Resogun 8.5/10-Pure gameplay. An assualt on all senses.

Sound Shapes 8.6/10-The perfect blend of game interactivity and musicianship. That deadmau5 album, one of the best moments I've had with my PS4

Battlefield N/A haven't played it yet. Waiting to see if its issues will be resolved, probably open it after exams.

Flower N/A -Gonna relax with it after exams lol. I've always been curious about it.

KillZone 7/10. I would bump it up another point if I could play it with mouse and keyboard.
NFS Rivals 7/10. Really fun racing game that is dragged down by it's presentation and bad frame rate.
Resogun 8.5/10. Fun game for what it is.

Why isn't anyone buying NFS? Is it hard to find?

Because it's 30FPS.
