PS4-Gaf: review your launch titles

Only big title I've bought is AC IV. I've been having fun with it, but I was indifferent to the ship stuff before I bought it, and I'm still not much of a fan. I've been scuppered on the chase down a warship mission and haven't been giving it much time as a result. Looks great.

Resogun's one of those games I play just to play off and on. It hasn't hooked me though I can see they snuck in some interesting mechanics that could give it legs if you happen to like that kind of game.

Contrast. Controls feel floaty, and the main focus is intensely uninteresting to me. Imaginary acrobats helping kids get taken by child welfare? Not in my sphere of interest at all.

Not into FPS games at all and won't buy EA titles. So I'm in wait mode for the most part.

Using the REAL scale...

Killzone SF: 6/10
Madden: 6.5/10
NFS Rivals: 8/10
Warframe: 7/10
Battlefield 4: 8.75/10 (When I can play it)
Resogun: 7.5/10

Killzone: Shadow Fall - 8/10: Absolutely gorgeous. Best looking game on the console. Campaign tends to get pretty dull at times, but the multiplayer is tons of fun and makes the game totally worth it.

Knack - 7/10: The simple combat mechanics work well for the game. The variety in enemies and environments keep things fresh. I just wish there were was more variety in gameplay. There are not enough platforming sections, and the ones it has are too easy. Also, I would have loved some puzzles. The game is inherently fun though and always puts a smile on my face.

Call of Duty: Ghost - 7.5/10: This is CoD so you pretty much know what you are getting. I was actually surprised with the jump in visuals from BLOPS 2 on PS3. The game performs well and there are no online connection problems. It is however, just more of the same.

Resogun - 9/10: This game is beautiful. The way every single enemy explodes is just mesmerizing. The gameplay is perfect and way more deep than you might think. Saving the humans adds an objective to the game that increases the chaos of just surviving and makes it way more intense. The high score mechanic in the game makes it super addictive and gives it incredible replayability. I love the use of the dualschock speaker as well. I only have two complaints with the game. The bosses are slightly boring. You can pretty much defeat them all the same way. Also, the online co-op, as fun as it is, is quite laggy. I assume that it will be fixed but for now, its unplayable.

Contrast - 7.5/10: This is a weird and kind of charming game. For the most part it performs well, but there are a few hiccups. Fun mechanics and some good puzzles, however they are generally pretty easy. It is very short though, and there is not much reason to replay the game.

Resogun: 10/10 It doesn't matter how short it is, this game is all about the flow state. It's addictive as fuck because of that. It's all about the pursuit of perfection, which always seems to be just out of reach.

Contrast: 5/10 Really struggling to hold my interest.

Warframe: ?/10 I think this would be way more fun to play with IRL friends, but none of mine play this. I've played online with randoms and it's not very fun.

Flower: 8/10 Does this count? I don't know but I'm enjoying it way more than the PS3 version because the controls work way better. Also, I was stoned to the gills.

Killzone: 8
Knack: 7
Resogun: 9
Warframe: 9
Blacklight: 8
Contrast: 6
Flower: 9

So far I'm having a good time with Warframe and I've been playing this the most. Killzone is a graphical marvel with some varied battles but I found it hard to stay immersed in the narrative. Knack is fun to play with my son and I enjoy the simple mechanics. Resogun is amazing.

I think im liking Killzone more than most. Its gorgeous, its non-linear, feels really good. Interesting, different multiplayer. Complaints about Bad AI and getting lost easily are definitely valid though.

Official rating:

I like it/10

That is good to hear, I have it downloaded but havent booted it up yet. This or Deadlight will be the next thing i play

Killzone SF - 7/10 solid experience with larger environments more color and very amazing graphics. Story is average and it doesn't break much ground. Overall a solid game but nothing that will revolutionize gaming

Knack - 7.5/10 - solid game and showcases a pixar quality graphics that ps4 is capable of. combat is hit and miss, dodging can be frustrating and the experience is very linear almost ps1 or early ps2 like. But it's a very charming game, worth a playthrough.

Resogun - 6.5/10 - it's a good idea but it gets old after a few levels.

overall a pretty decent launch that shows us the power of the ps4. now we wait until the truly great games come out my guess is infamous SS will be the first truly amazing experience on ps4.

Killzone Shadow Fall -7/10 for me so far.

Not done yet but nothing in the single player really makes me say wow this is amazing in terms of gameplay. Graphics look pretty good but those lower res assets are there in some places. I have no doubt the next game will look significantly better as they get more time with the system. Gunplay feels pretty good, AI is okay on Normal difficulty, some pathing issues sometimes from them.

Multiplayer is quite fun though I always play with at least one friend. The PS4 controller is helping my enjoyment some because it is just so damn good compared to the DS3 for FPS games. I like the way the game cycles through different gametypes in a single match. The classes are good and have a sort of rock paper scissor feel to some of the abilities. Teamwork is rewarded which I like a lot and the overall pacing of multiplayer is very good.

Resogun - 9.2/10 Fun as shit addicting to top your score
Need for Speed 8.9/10 - Fun as shit, it's a rush to bust racer players as a cop.
Assassin's Creed 4 8/10 - It's Assassin's Creed and looks great and has pirates, I might have franchise fatigue at this point though.
Killzone - 6.5/10 Meh single player campaign, decent multiplayer, orgasmic visuals.
Knack - 5.5/10 My girl likes it, it's an ok platformer, but it seems like it lacks soul, it's very pretty, like an interactive Pixar movie. Megaman has more inner conflict about fighting enemies then Knack does.

Killzone SF: 6/10
Madden: 6.5/10
NFS Rivals: 8/10
Warframe: 7/10
Battlefield 4: 8.75/10 (When I can play it)
Resogun: 7.5/10

I've only played Killzone: Shadow Fall and Need For Speed: Rivals. I agree with your review scores on both. If I wasn't trophy whoring, I would've played Resogun and Warframe by now.

I'm enjoying the launch titles much more than I was expecting, especially after early reviews.

BF4 MP: 9/10 (when it works)
Killzone: 7.5/10
NFS Rivals: 8/10
Resogun: 10/10

Shout out to KZ for looking absolutely amazing through.

Killzone Shadow Fall: 8/10, solid game but terrible acting/story.
Resogun: 9/10, excellent gameplay and a plethora of amazingness to the senses, but its not something I would play on its own constantly. Its a music/podcast while gaming game.

Killzone -- Attractive but inept.
FIFA -- Feels good but I still suck at it.
Assassin's Creed -- Ugly and stale but the writing/acting is unoffensive at least.
Battlefield -- Currently broken as far as providing a next gen experience.
ResoGun -- Nothing wrong with this game.

I think im liking Killzone more than most. Its gorgeous, its non-linear, feels really good. Interesting, different multiplayer. Complaints about Bad AI and getting lost easily are definitely valid though.

Official rating:

I like it/10

The AI isn't as good as the other games, which is surprising. Wonder if it's any different on higher difficulty.

Killzone: 9/10: must buy
NBA 2K14: 8/10: wait for price drop
Resogun: 10/10: you already have it!

still judging DCUO, Warframe, and Contrast (not feeling contrast so far).

Killzone - 4/5: Great controls and gunplay, good campaign level design, good multiplayer, mediocre guns and plot.

Resogun - 4/5: Fun, pretty and challenging.

NFS:R - 3/5: Enjoyable gameplay but the large map size coupled with the small player limit means most of the time I'm playing against AI which is a pretty big letdown, especially on the Cop side of the game.

Knack - 3/5: A fun though flawed game. Too much fighting and not enough platforming. The combo upgrade, the increased number of enemies per encounter and the variety of enemy abilities made the later portion of the game more enjoyable than I was expecting.

Contrast: 7.5/10 (Love the art style, music, concept. Lacking on the execution)

Knack: 8/10 (Good old fashioned fun. Reminds me of my early Playstation days)

Flower: 9/10

Resogun:

(Seriously, I'll be playing this until the PS5 comes out, much like I played Super Stardust all through the previous generation. This game is crack.)

Toshinden 5: Why did this have to be delayed! Still give it a 9/10 cuz it looks wixard!

Kileak 3: Regnoming the Gene: Killzone killer! But why do the controls suck? 8.5/10

Wipeout 2097 HD: They took out the best tracks! Still looks pretty I guess. Why all this loading???!!! 9/10.

Resogun = Great (and I'm not even into this kind of thing)
Contrast = Meh+ (could have been better but still a playable title)
Warframe = Good (personally, I don't like it to much)
Blacklight = Good (personally, I don't like it much either)

Currently Playing = GTAV & Dragons Dogma which are both Fantastic.

Resogun - 10 Extremely fun in coop
Knack - 8 playing through on hard and loving it.
Killzone - 7 - meh its pretty but meh.
Assassins - 9 Cant stop just sailing around ignoring missions.
Battlefield - broken...

Here are my initial impressions on a few games I've had some time with.

NBA 2k14 - Gameplay is good and the game is a visual spectacle. However, the menus really hampers the experience. Navigating to find where everything is, isn't intuitive. Practice mode is hidden away in the NBA Today menu. Changing the control scheme doesn't always save and switches back to the default setting. Looking for custom rosters seems clunky. I still don't understand how to save or load custom rosters. Do I have to download the custom roster everytime I start a new season? Why do I have to upload a roster in an attempt to use a custom roster shared online? Are official roster updates automatically downloaded? The manual included doesn't explain any of this.

In Career mode, I made a Center over 7 foot. He has pretty high rebound ratings (90s), but can't rebound to save his life. Positioning is there, but a smaller player somehow gets the rebound instead. Sometimes the ball just goes directly to the opposing player being boxed out.

Rent it

Fifa 14 - I am new to this series, but the game is fun. Menus are now where as confusing as NBA 2K14. One major drawback is the lack of support for multiple players on the same console online. This is one of the few EA games I've enjoyed in a long while.

Worth buying at a discount.

Assassin's Creed 4 - Game looks great at times and not so good at times. I love the naval battles. I don't care about the modern day portions, but loving the rest.

Worth buying.

Warframe - Haven't had much time with it, but didn't have much fun with it. It's free so can't really complain.

From another thread.

Sweet. A quick launch guide based off my experience so far!:

Resogun is the best launch game imo. So much addicting fun, great co-op too.

Contrast is unique but may bore you (I personally like it, great atmosphere).

2k is great, bar a few problems. Best sport game available this launch with FIFA probably close behind.

BF4 runs and plays amazingly. But most of the maps suck. And I don't find it fun to play without friends. Single player gets boring after a while, but it's a good showcase for the game.

Killzone looks amazing. What I've played from the single player was pretty dull. But man the multiplayer, steals the show, I like it better with Battlefield 4s.

That's all I've played. I plan on picking up Lego Marvel this weekend cause the PS3 demo was fun as hell and it's a great couch co-op. I heard it's great on PS4 so why not?

Killzone: 8

Single player is a roller coaster and can be baffling at times, UI Stinks, but great multiplayer maps, guns, abilities and breathtaking graphics both online and off.

Battlefield 4: 0/10

I havent been able to connect to any MP games. I am afraid to play single player because of save bug. Basically waiting for patch. And I hate required Origin pass.

Resogun: 8/10

Stunning efx and fun gameplay surprised me. Not typically my thing but I like it.

Need For Speed Rivals: 8/10

Amazingly addictive game, great graphics, lots of hair raising fun. Reasonable grind progression. Just really fun. I dont like some of the AI Rubber banding and the required Origin crap.

COD Ghosts: 7/10

Havent touched the singlplayer yet, but so far I am liking the guns better thank BOPS2. Better AR's this time around. And unlocked from the get go. Map quality varys but there are a few standouts. Addictive loadout/perk/progression system. Buttery smooth framerate in MP so far. Graphics are dissapointing compared to all the other games above.

FIFA: 7/10

Gameplay feels ok, but graphics are foul. Kind of liked last year FIFA13 on PS3 better.

Cant wait to play NBA2k and AC4 at somepoint. I did play a demo of AC4 at E3 and liked it. Also tried Knack a few times and hated it. Havent tried Contrast yet. Overall I think its a very solid launch lineup.

I've only played a few of the launch games but I'm finding this thread to be incredibly useful kudos to those that took the time out to write a little something up.

Resogun - I love it. It is very challenging but also rewarding I'm a big shump fan and SSHD was one of my most played games on PS3. I'm still having a bit of trouble trying to figure out the mechanic of when humans are released though. It's certainly worthy of the free download. I'd even pay the asking price for it without plus. I'll be playing resogun for quite a while.

Killzone SF - Against my better judgement I bought this. I'm not a FPS guy but I wanted to have something at launch that was built specifically for the PS4 and was a graphical showcase. I knew that Guerilla could deliver that. Sadly though graphics are the only thing it delivered. I can't properly comment on MP because I only played a couple of matches but the single player was incredibly boring and I didn't finish it. Ended up selling it for $42 bucks on ebay. So I was actually paid $12 bucks to play it thanks to the Amazon deal.

NBA 2k14 - I casually follow basketball enough to know the names of the players and understand the sport. I haven't played a basketball game in 2 or 3 years. I think the last one I played was 2k12. I enjoy the game but there are some things I can nit pick with it. The menu system is terrible and seems to be right out of PS2 era. 2k really needs to hire some UI people. I often get stuck in animations that lead to frustration. And the default settings for presentation get annoying pretty quick. I do enjoy the game though and after changing the presentation to not show replays every 30 seconds I like it more.

I don't like giving out scores so take from my words what you will. Again thanks for this thread. I really should pick up Knack it's right up my alley.

Only have a PS4 at this point but:

ACIV - 8/10
Killzone - 8/10
Resogun - 9/10
Flower - 7/10
NBA2K14 - 9/10
Madden25 - 6.5/10
Contrast - 6/10

Resogun is easily a 10/10 for me. When I am done with it, it will be only the second game I get a platinum trophy for (Motorstorm RC was the first).

I'm buying Need For Speed Rivals today, so we'll see what I think about that.

Killzone - 7.5/10
Stunning visuals paired with a dull campaign. I did have some fun but those moments were few and far between.

NBA 2K14 - 8/10
It's NBA 2K, but prettier.

Resogun - 8/10
Fun.

Shadow Fall: Lots of trial and error in the campaign. I'm nearing the end, but I'm finding it to be a real slog. The universe just isn't compelling, and the storytelling is really uninspired. On the plus side, the graphics are pretty great, and there's plenty of varying locales. It's also scored well; the soundtrack is pretty unique for a title like this.

As for the multiplayer, I'm enjoying it, but I don't envision it holding my interest for too long. It's nice having access to all the weapons from the outset. No grinds unless you care about attachments. Giving snipers/campers a teleportation ability is pretty hilarious.

All in all, there's nothing really emergent here.

Haven't touched anything else yet.

Resogun: Fucking awesome and addicting. 9/10
AC4: I did not expect AC4 to be my favorite retail game so far. This game is amazing and far better than AC3. 9/10
Killzone: Just hasn't grabbed me at all since I started playing (multiplayer or single). Looks amazing graphically but falls in the same category with the other Killzone games outside of KZ2. Meh. 6/10 so far.
BF4: Broken at launch like all DICE multiplayer games so I can't give a grade right now.

Need to spend more time with Warframe, Blacklight Retribution and Contrast.

Killzone - 8/10
Knack - 6/10
AC4 - 9/10
BF4 - I haven't played enough to give it a fair rating, but I'm digging killzone more right now.
NFS:Rivals - 8/10
Resogun - 9/10
Warframe - it's ight/10

Can't believe some of the lower reviews for Resogun. I played it for 4-5 hours last night and couldn't put it down. Trophy hunting.

I think it's a blast personally, but to each their own.

AC4 - 7/10 (not a fan of the series)
Resogun - 9/10
Killzone SP - 7/10
Killlzone MP - 9/10
NBA 2k14 - 8/10
Knack - 7/10
Warframe - 6/10

Killzone: Shadow Fall (SP, I didn't play a lot of MP and am not skilled enough to pass judgment) - 6
Gorgeous, with almost no frame rate loss. Visually striking at times, from the clean but sterile Vekta to the slums of New Helghan. A graphical flagship for the console, and the OWL is sometimes a very useful (and aesthetically, pretty cool) companion. Its campaign is stilted from the beginning; you progress through the first chapter only to fast forward from adolescence to shadow marshaldom with not even a minute in good dialogue or explanation. The underlying themes and backstory (the political effects of physical segregation, mass deportation, nasty racism, resource wars) should provide a punchier campaign to push through, but it all falls flat. It's all a Neoconzone parody so far. I'd rather see another team make a third-person shooter and give this plot a try and see what happens, to be honest. The gunplay is alright, at least.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - 8
Combat and animations feel a little clumsy, like in the first game (I skipped the others unfortunately) but are serviceable. Or maybe I suck at video games. Kenway's charisma (a far cry from Altair, eh?) and the beautiful environments (gorgeous waves, big sandbox) make this a pretty engaging game to play through so far.

Knack - 6.5
Clean graphics and excellent draw distance, but even for a 'kiddie game' or whatever, the characters are a little annoying.

yea it took me a while to figure it out too. Every so often, the announcer will say "Keepers Detected". Each human cage is assigned to a Keeper and when that keeper is killed, the cage opens and the human is released. The keepers are the enemies that have a green glow. Basically they are just a group of normal enemies that glow green. Some keepers are only on the screen for a few seconds though so if you dont kill them in time, the human dies in the cage. Once the keeper is destroyed, a green beam of light shoots from the now dead keeper, to the human cage that it corresponds to, and releases that human. If you have any questions, let me know!
