5 is my neutral point, whenever I score stuff.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag 8.5/10
Despite liking the previous instalment more than most, there's no denying it, it wasn't great. It was a victim of unnecessary bloat, an uninteresting protagonist and an ending that's just embarrassing. Well, who'd have thought a game fired out one year later could be such a comeback?
There's no shaking that feeling that you're simply playing a game designed for the previous generation, brought up to speed. But it's still mighty impressive, thanks to some of the best water and weather effects you'll have ever seen and detail now allowed to shine through thanks to 1080p.
Edward Kenway, while still no Ezio, is a marked improvement over conner and a likeable enough roughish character. What definitely works though, is how he finds himself accidentally thrust into the war between Assassins and Templars and having him fudge through the details early on, leads to some surprisingly tense scenes.
Best of all though is what a joy it is to now explore and participate in the world, as raiding ships, trading goods, hunting and leveling up both yourself and your ship are all fun and addictive activities. The amount of activities and collectables that exist simply to fill bars, could be considered bloat too, but I'll take it over the unnecessary hand holding and tutorializing the previous game was plagued with. Combat and stealth mechanics both feel like they're in desperate need of a shake up though, despite the minor improvements both received since the last game.
It's a game that capitalizes on a shared fantasy of what a fun pirate game should be and it's succeeds probably thanks to no small amount of looting from Sid Meier's game.
Killzone: Shadow Fall 7.5/10
Shadow Fall's campaign works, mostly, but it's both tepid and full of attempts to elicit emotional reactions, which quite frankly, fall flat almost every time. It's thankfully held up by amazing gunplay, mostly good enemy encounters, a criminally underrated soundtrack and fantastic art realized through incredible tech.
Multiplayer, while not living up the series's best, is quite frankly much better than I expected it to be and I haven't even had a chance to play with friends or Gaf yet.
Battlefield 4 ?/10
It's not too bad, when it actually works...
