PS4 Pro Benefits for 1080p TV Owners (general and game-specific)

So first game I'll be playing at any length in my Pro is FFXV. But I'm wondering how long it'll take for the patch to come that affects 1080p owners.

It seems the 4k mode is in at launch, so 1080p owners should have a downsampled version of the game at least. The 1080p patch that aims for 60 FPS is set to release in December.

Here is an Uncharted 4 PS4 Pro shot. Had to reduce to JPG sorry.

*Excitedly unpacks PS4 Pro*

*Don't know what to do with it*

*Watches Hulu on it*

Haha. I'm not much better, settled on watching Netflix and YT vids.

I did play 5 mins of Tlou, U4, and Hitman. Looks clean. Hitman is blurry though for whatever reason.

There's too many visible jaggies in the enhanced, and I think the enhancements are largely something that can only be really appreciated by analyzing screenshots. On the other hand, the fantastic image quality provided by 4K downsampling is in-your-face obvious anytime you look anywhere while playing.

I agree. The game started with the enhanced details mode and I was pretty disappointed. The supersampled one, on the other hand, wow! That IQ is what I'm looking for.

In other words, I think I noticed some improvements on Infinite Warfare (the campaign) but the game is already pretty good on standard PS4. Truth is, it's hard to tell without having them side by side. Might give it another shot with the specialist mode. Pretty cool.

1080p guy here and I have TLoU. How do I know if I'm getting the 1080p60 mode or the 4k30 downsampled mode? The only option in the menu is lock frame rate to 30 or not.

I think that's the toggle. It's actually 1800p60 or 4k30. But it's very hard to tell the difference between the 2 in 1080p, so just stick with 60.

Disappointing somehow that they can only get 1440p with a 2D upsample (Doesn't seem to be using CBR. So you'd think they'd want to get a higher resolution than 1440p for just a standard upscale)from UC4.
Visually from the comparisons i've seen, it looks the same as the base PS4 game.

Keep in mind I really loved both games, but not really. Its a tad better but still below average. Just my opinion though. The game is incredible nonetheless

Just don't see why they'd waste their time for a game that old where a patch wouldn't bring in extra sales.

Well they patched Infamous so you never know

Finally got it up and running. You'd figure with this being my third HDD swap I would have learned to download the bigger update file on the PS4 site, but nope.

Super quick 1080p hits:

1) Hitman seems OK? Maybe a bit smoother, both in framerate and detail. Hard to tell on Hokkaido, but replaying Paris (which I've played a ton of) and things feel a bit more detailed. Could all be in my head but I'll keep at it.

2) Titanfall 2 looks amazing. Especially single player but in multiplayer, too.

3) And yeah, P.T. still works. Keep on clingin'.

Got a bunch of games installing overnight (since I deleted nearly everything off my drive to make the transfer as short as possible) so I'm excited to check out Infamous, Tomb Raider, and a few others tomorrow.

edit: also so far it's incredibly quiet. Hopefully it stays that way.

Mafia patch was released. Anyone willing to try for me?

Going to load it up tomorrow and see what the additions are for the pro. To be honest the thing that got me the most was that dithered effect for clouds and skybox. I hope that is reduced or eliminated.

EDit: i am glad this thread exist though for the longest time people seemed to be under the impressions there were not going to be any improvements for 1080p sets. So it seems there are three possible features and a few offers choice to swap between them.

Just played bf1. I have played ~40 ish hours on the OG PS4. After playing -4 ish hours on the pro, I feel the frame rate is better along with resolution. The ingame menu doesn't feel laggy as well. Of course this could all be placebo. I am hoping someone will look into the fps and resolution soon.

On a 1080p TV the difference between 2160p and 1800p downsampling is miniscule. The main reason to use the 30fps mode is for the much better looking shadows. To be honest the 30fps implementation in TLOU feels awful and I wouldn't choose it over the 60fps option no matter how much better it looks.

Do we know anything about Xcom 2 yet? Is the patch out? How's it run?

It's kind of the reason i bought the pro at launch as I only started xcom 2 a week back, would like to play the rest with it looking/running better.

I've got the pro hooked to a native 1080p projector at 70", titanfall 2 looked sweet and I could see the difference between what I saw in the beta on og ps4 to what I see now on pro. Now I'm having a hard time deciding between enriched visuals and 4k for rise of TB raider. Can someone with 1080p tell me which is the best mode?

Just installed it, the 1.01 patch is old, I think, and doesn't mention 4k or Pro.

Do I need to do anything special to get the benefits for my 1080p tv? It should be automatic as long as the game supports it right?

Correct, no CBR. I believe it was a quick and dirty approach to get a patch out. They are apparently looking more at the hardware to see what they can come up with.

Though 1440 on a 1080 screen should look nice and clean.

It looks phenomenal, considering that their AA solution was so good in 1080p to begin with. Any slight softness that there was before in the game due to their AA solution is now gone, and the game easily looks like something downsampled from 4K, on a 1080p TV.

Hmm a bit scary if that's what the improvements will be like though...I'm struggling to notice in the early goings of TF2.
TF2 was 900p on regular PS4. Now it's downsampled from 1440p. Huge boost in image quality.

So Titanfall 2 automatically adjusts to my PS4 Pro? There are no settings to change? Not sure I really notice much difference :p
Yes and it looks much cleaner on larger 1080p screens and the shadowquality is a bit better.
It is the same game however. So not sure what you were expecting.

And it's implemented automatically without changing any settings? It looks pretty sharp, but I dunno...I'm certainly not wowed by it compared to before.

To the above poster: I was expecting/hoping the improvements would stand out more to me. The Pro enhancements are just not very noticable to me so far. We'll see...still early days.

Perhaps I'm not very sensitive to image quality, and graphical effects are more important to me.

You're using the wrong game to see the difference , do yourself a favor and try rise of the tomb raider, it looks stunning

It's much easier to see what you're missing when you degrade, than to appreciate the new thing when you upgrade :)

Try playing the game on the old PS4 now, if you still have it. It's much blurrier.

I would had like to change but 400€ is too much for these upgrades.

I would definetly consider it for my new house, where there will be a 4K TV but by that time, I should wait to PS5 if the rumours have started.

And selling my actual OG PS4 doesn't look too good, because only 150€ seems very low and still, I would have to pay 250€.

But if I wouldn't care about the money, of course I would buy it even with a 1080p TV. Those screen captures look fantastic and all the news, like the FFXV's one, are great.

Btw if you liked the high framerate of the previous Tomb Raider game on PS4, you have that option as well. It will give you smoother playability - but the 4K mode has smoother image.

I prefer locked 30 to an unlocked framerate that isn't consistent. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edtion on the PS4 dropped a lot, too, in my experience.

Ahhhh okay. Thanks for the help.

Can't overstate how much I love the system (first PS4 for me) but Sony really needs to work with devs to standardize how they want these options presented. I should literally be picking 1800p60 or 2160p30 in an in game menu if those are my choices, not just "lock st 30 fps yes/no"

Not sure if you are referring to your TV SETUP or game PS4. FOr TV

Make sure your TV is properly calibrated.

If you are really anal about IQ from your TV get a pro home cinema quality HDMI cable eg QED/CHORD brand.

I had to let my transfer all night so I didn't get to try it out until this morning, but only for a few mins. Since it is hooked up to my 1080p Pioneer plasma, do I just leave all the video settings in the console to automatic? Or do I need to force it to 2160p so it will super sample?

Just referring about the game. I have everything setup and booted up Titanfall 2. The game did look cleaner but i wanted to make sure so i can know if its not some placebo effect.
