PS4 Pro for users with 1080p TVs - does it make sense?

Goddamn, you can't have enough PS4 Pro, right?

LOOK THIS PS4 PRO GAME IT'S BEAUTIFUL
WILL YOU BUY IT
PLEASE BUY IT I CAN'T TELL YOU I WORK AT SONY BUT I NEED IT
BISH AND EVILORE WANT ME TO BUY IT AND I WILL COMMIT TO THEM
OH IT WON'T HAVE 4K BLU-RAY WHICH SONY DEVELOPED, WHO CARES? #4theplayers
RESOLUTION IS BETTER THAN FRAMERATE
I LOVE MY PS4 AND I'M SO IGNORANT THAT I NEED A $2000 PC TO MAKE IT RUN LIKE A PRE-RENDERED SCENE OF A GAME THAT WON'T LOOK LIKE THAT AT LAUNCH
OH YES I'LL PAY EXTRA $10 A YEAR FOR MORE SHITTY GAMES THROUGH PS PLUS (and those PC peasants who don't pay in Steam don't support it) AND FOR AN ONLINE SERVICE THAT HAS THE WORST SECURITY AMONG ALL COMPETITORS
KNACK WILL BE GREAT
THE ORDER 1886 WILL BE GREAT
NO MAN'S SKY WILL BE GREAT
[Insert next hyped to death game] WILL BE GREAT
TRUMP IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL IN THIS WORLD AND HILLARY IS A SAINT AND BLABLABLA

What a pathetic bunch of fags you are. Admit it damn it, you are not Sony fanboys, you are their shills, and you are so stupid that you will do it for FREE and won't even complain.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha

Checkerboard rendering and sub native rendering look muddy and just about as awful as it always has. Despite better techniques.
No amount of trickery will ever look as good as native res rendering without upscaling.

Forget 4k, 1080p with better image quality is where the PS4P will shine.
Artifacts and aliasing should become far less of an issue.

Native res with good AA> sub native res with mediocre AA

This uses 1080p as an example but the principle is the same. Native res with better AA will always look better than a higher res screen with sub native rendering.

And given the shots provided by Sony of Horizon. This game looks WAY better at 1080p thanks to the higher resolution rendering than it does displaying at 4k with sub native rendering. SURE, the sub native rendering but higher than 1080p resolution looks better on a 4k than just upscaling 1080p rendering.
But that's not what we are talking about here. If 1080p TVs had the same level of access to HQ TVs with HDR. Games would look visually better and more well rounded on the 1080p thanks to vastly superior IQ from the Anti Aliasing. People aren't going to sit close enough to really resolve the detail from the higher res display and all that detail is going to be muddied up thanks to the artifacts and aliasing to begin with.

Just look at how much better the image quality is when downsampled to 1080p with a decent quality resolve.

(Given the developers of every game give you the choice for a max quality 1080p30 mode)

The fuzziness and aliasing are all but gone.

Since 60FPS is pretty much off the table for many games due to the CPU. The increase in image quality for 1080p should be way more worthwhile IMO.
All we really need are better 1080p TVs made with HDR support.

it seems like also the dips into 30fps should be off the table as well and most devs will have it locked to 30 no drops

I think the Pro can be marketed just as great to those who already have good 1080p monitors and displays. Being able to play every single game in native 1080p is a huge plus, especially as we are moving forward when we might see some 900p cross platforms start hitting again due time limitations for optimization or even system power.

I wouldn't doubt if ubisofts titles like the new assassins creed next year or even wildlands are in 900p due to scope and graphics.

I will gladly take locked 30 with amazing crisp images over the original model. Sure 60 fps with graphics bumps as well are nice, but the only way I see that happening is if the game is in 60fps in the first place.

It mostly seems like games that are 30fps targeted from the start will not get a 60fps patch as it would require possibly to much QA or testing to make sure nothing drops. We might get unlocked framerate to the 45-60 range. But I think games targeted at 30 will for the most part stay 30 and we get supersample with more effects.

This post is bizarre, you're arguing for something that's already happening with Horizon ZD.

UHD display users get their higher res imagery.
FHD display users get their higher res, downsampled imagery.

I really don't understand why both Sony and Microsoft focus on 4K so much. Games would benefit so much more from 60fps and good antialiasing at 1080p. I was hoping I could get Uncharted 4 in 60fps on PS4 Pro.

If PS4 Pro games end up with a higher, yet sub 4K resolution and a few extra effects at 30fps I will be thoroughly disappointed.

I have a 1080p 23" monitor that I play all my games on and I'm getting a PS4 Pro. I rather invest in the system rather than the TV because 4K TV's are still expensive. When they come down in price, I'll have something that can take advantage of it while still getting benefits on my current monitor (improved framerates, higher resolution, etc).

TBH I don't know why anyone would buy a PS4 Slim for $300 when for only a $100 more you can get the improved version of the console with more than twice the GPU power, even at 1080p it'll still be an improvement.

Sure. I dont own a 4K display, but supersampling and improved performance is great. I still don't own a PS4, so when I do get one it will be the Pro.

Is 1080p a requirement for all upcoming games running on the PS4 Pro starting from November?

I can't seem to find anything on this except an old eurogamer article.

The ultimate FAQ has this to say: "Following PS4 Pro’s launch on November 10 in North America, virtually all new PS4 game releases moving forward will be able to take advantage of PS4 Pro capabilities on day one, or in some cases shortly after launch via a free downloadable update.

Does that mean some games might not even support the Pro, or am I reading it wrong?

Because many people are cheap and don't have the disposable income you and I might have. I agree with you though.

I think the gains will actually be bigger on 1080p. Downsampling and better performance? I'm in. Hopefully many devs will follow Rise of the Tomb Raider's example.

Here is my question:

Even if there won't be a framrate boost per se, will the Pro running a locked 30fps game, that might suffer the odd dip in a standard PS4 possibly see that same game run a more consistent 30, even without a patch?

If that were a possibility then it makes what is an appealing upgrade to me even more appealing.

I'm upgrading to the Pro on a 1080p TV, and I think it's worth it for me. Generally better or smoother framrates, better graphical detail and effects and better image quality. Probably faster loading as well although minimally. Then there's other things like the extra USB port and hopefully SATA III to come.

However a caveat being I was always planning on replacing my launch model this year, with the Slim in mind. The fact the Pro exists means I'll be getting that instead and I'm willing to pay the extra £50-100 for those listed above. If I wasn't intending to replace my current PS4 anyway, then I'd be more hesitant since I feel in general thr reveal was underwhelming.
