PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

Megaton. The app has been shit for way too long.

bish gets all the credit :)
* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

why?

Welp, they managed to address my biggest issues with the UI: the Library will no longer be useless.

Everything else is just gravy, especially the enhancements to the Live From PlayStation area and .mp3 support. Guess Suspend/Resume is no longer a thing, so I might as well act like they never bellowed about it.

Thanks SONY! Now just keep kicking ass with the games.

Unbelievably disappointing update. Sony fucking blows when it comes to adding the features all their users want. Seriously, who gives a shit about better voice commands and "Players You May Know"?

All their users don't want background music playback? They don't want to backup stuff? They don't want to improve that long list of icons?

Library revamp is good because it means they are open to listening. So even if this isn't perfect they can tweak again later. I'd actually like fewer 'recent' icons, and then have music/TV/library 'folders' easier to get to

Not quite themes, but I am happy with changing colors. I was getting sick of blue.
Edit: Nevermind, themes were not listed on the bullets. Yay!

All the features sound good, especially the USB Music and the backup will come in handy when I pull the trigger on a larger HDD.

Much better than the previous feature list we got. Hopefully they put in some smaller changes too like being able to pause downloads.

Music and external sub stuff is good but overall, pretty underwhelming. This can't be 2.0.
'You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there.'
Seems like this is all part of 2.0.

Fix the HUGE lag in friend lists, messages and other notifications and I'd be happy.

I thought that was just me. Does everyone else have huge lag in between sending messages, too? Sometimes it'll appear immediately after I hit send, but often it won't show up until like 5 or 10 seconds later... at worst I'll check back in a few minutes to see it didn't send, so I send it again and the earlier one sends with the new one so the receiver sees it twice...

Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
Well that is certainly welcomed.

The lack of custom icons on this makes me hopeful that you can just use whatever backgrounds you want now because that image certainly doesn't look like the 'themes' they've announced where Icons/Titles were customized.

really liking what 2.0 promises to bring

USB Player - so we can't access the music stored on the PS4 drive itself?

Back Up Data - can we finally restore screenshots now?

and YAY for Library filters FINALLY

It's a step in the right direction, but would much rather have had user created Folders to be honest...

People have been crying for MP3 support, themes, colors and library sorting/retooling of the main content bar since launch. This is easily their largest update hitting things people want so far.

They showed some animated elements a month back I think. Basically, the background can animate dynamically depending on what part of the OS you're at. Move up on the menu and the theme might move in sync.

Goodbye blue background! Never again.

Background music is pretty cool, and I'm looking forward to messing around with Share Play.

There are still features missing that could be coded in hours I bet. Friend notifications, pausing downloads, simple folder system for apps and games. Are Sony programmers just lazy?

How about restoring functionality that's on its 8 year old predecessor? Such as:

  • Sorting trophies by date earned
  • Sorting friends lists via more categories
  • Ability to pause a given download
  • Ability to store music on to the HDD
  • Ability to turn off the controller w/ two steps
I acknowledge the improvements and addition has Sony has made to PS4's OS. However, when you reserve around 3GB of RAM, it is expected the feature is set to expand without being hacked at the knees.

I'd like to at least be able to play my audio CDs on PS4... PS3 is the only device left at my house that can play them, and the disc laser on that thing is starting to wear out...

Sony, please.

I'm not really sure I'd call it 'themes' when it looks by all accounts that it's just a background change.
Better than nothing but I was hoping for something a little more significant like icons, rearranging the content of each level, etc.

MB3 via USB is a step, however small in the right direction. Personally I wish they'd do something like the XBO in allowing us to use a second USB drive for content/saves/downloads/etc

Would have been nice for them to give some sort of time-frame for the release, or a beta of sorts.
