PS4 UI hands-on [offscreen]

Simplistic and robust. You won't be saying that when you get your hands on it. I saw the UI as of a few days back. Things are much more functional than you would imagine. Especially compared to the missing boxes and bare Xbone UI.

We'll see about that Jim.

Thanks for the explanation. It's a bit surprising to have a transition from a minimalist interface to a very visual one, but why not.

There are three levels:

TOP: Looks like PS3 XMB letting you go into Friends, Profile, Settings etc
MIDDLE: The icons with all the different games on, and What's New, Library, Store
BOTTOM: When you select a game to view info etc

You can easily jump between them via button presses. It is light, but it's quick, lag free in-between game and menu and runs at 60fps. It also has relaxing music :)

XMB was a piece of shit.

This doesn't look great, but it's a step in the right direction. It's simple and not incredibly annoying to navigate like the XMB garbage was.

crack kills

how was the xmb annoying to navigate? LMAO

video was meh though just a minute plus of scrolling back & forth

I like it, simple, clean, and from what I can tell is very smooth. I hope they retained the seasonal theme like in the PS3.

That is when you select one of the games. You can press X or down and it will drop to the lower level of the Dynamic Menu. It will then display the game info, show a background, play game music, show trophies, info, trailers etc. From there are options to Start the game.

Speaking of trophies. Will every trophy be synced to the server in real-time in the background as you're unlocking each one like it already does for achievements on the 360?. That would be convenient to those who use...

But what about the multimedia, how do you access your photos and videos, do you have any info about it? looks like library might be that.

There are many things to criticize about the XMB, but complexity and difficulty to navigate are not among them.

Blades were way better.

I agree that the 360 blades were best, but the XMB is pretty damn useful too.

blades > XMB >>>>>>>>> NXE > current 360 UI

Looks like the PS4 UI is reasonably functional and fast, at least. Let's just hope their interface to the PSN shop is much better than the shitty, slow, buggy excuse for a shop that the PS3 currently has.

Don't know, nothing like that on dev kit FW (which IS different to retail). I guess we will see in the next couple of weeks when we see retail machines. Library may well be that, I honestly don't know!

Assuming there's going to be videos and photos at launch is being a bit optimistic, given we know there's no music. What's likely is they'll be accessible through separate apps, so they don't show up in the system menu, like the Vita.

Looks pretty snappy and nice, but obviously so much is lost without a connection to PSN. Now it's just a row of boxes scrolling by. Also, this is just one section, right? Like the main section of things you've recently used, or whatever.

If the game snapshot and video recording features are available at launch, there must be some place in the menus where you can access your pictures and videos.

XMB is annoying to navigate because of its insane number of pointless options you have to go through to find what you're looking for. If you could customize what you wanted on the UI, it would have been fine.

Finding anything left of the Games section is a fucking nightmare. With every iteration of the 360's UI, and the Wii's, I could find everything instantaneously. But XMB is pretty damn awful in that regard.

Simple, slick, smooth. Much better than XMB imo.

It Lacks a bit of customizability though. Can you mess around with anything in the UI? As in move tiles around, sort of "make it your own"?

I'm only telling you from what I saw with my own two eyes. If you saw the Xbone you would think the PS4 UI is fantastic in even it's dev state.

There is more to the PS4 interface than meets the eye.

Why do you keep talking about the Xbox?

There's not much to say about this video since it's just a row of squares, but it looks simple enough.

Oh right, lol. I'm assuming they're accessed through an app, iirc, there's one specifically made for game video and screencaps.

FWIW, I think they do that with the current batch of Bravias:

The Bravia UI looks very similar to the PS4's so I'm expecting the Library view to be similar to the All App view on the Bravias. From what i can tell, the checked items on the Bravia app menu are downloaded while the others are available for download. I'm curious about the filters though. I haven't found any real pictures with that option, I've only seen it in PR shots.
Thank you, sounds very promising. Wasn't looking forward to scrolling through my 1000 item download list to get my old copy of flOw on my PS4.

Aw : ( I want to see so much how good of a media center the ps4 is.

Then it would make sense why there is not a icon for it on the upper row if it is with an app.

I think they're only accessible under the share menu. During the Gamescoms demo the Upload Screenshot option had room for a list of images and there's was a preview button so I wouldn't be surprised if at launch that's the only way we'll be able to access those files.

There's also an archive button in the Live from PS menu, but I'm guessing that will be for archived PS4 Twitch broadcasts.

You must be a simpleton when it comes to technology if you find the XMB this complex and hard to navigate. I guess you have a hard time navigating and working a computer if so too.

No, any friends logged in on their Vita will be at the bottom of your friends list. Their profile never fully loads up on the PS3.

Hmmm, well now I'm curious how this is going to work.

It will probably be all unified, with the only way to see the console a friend is on is by what game they're playing (unless it's a cross plat game).

I like the speed of it. I do however wish there was something similar to XB1's snap, but I guess suspend will do.

So complex
