PS5 shell discoloration

It is the middle hook thing to keep the shell in place (it's on both sides of the console).
There's more than just one, you can see them all if you look at the console from the side and stare for a while.

It's part of the mould process to increase structural integrity. Any discolour that looks like poop is the owners doing, stop shitting on your brand new console.

There's also no way for heat to transfer to the white panels so that's also out the window.

Can't wait for inside smokers to complain about their discoloured console and blame Sony

The fans suck, not blow. There is no concentrated heat being blown onto the flaps. The heat comes out of the side vents.

So no idea what all this means.

feets.

Also, you could resize the pictures, the forum allows you to adjust them instead of posting 3 page scroll long pics where in one of them you can only see feets.

How is it that you are bothered by the slight discoloration of the PS5 that barely anyone here notice while being okay with that worn out looking TV stand?

Yup, time to get a new PS5.

I just checked mine and noticed a fine layer of dust and pet hair. WTF Sony, how could you let this happen???

I just see the stark contrast between your banged up "vintage" cabinet and "near pristine" PS5. There's the obvious difference to care about.

PS5. It discolors, whines, resets, jams, turns into cat food, turns into a foot massager and beats Xbox X at launch games.
It does everything.

After looking at it for awhile I see it. I'm guessing it's mostly from the molding process. Might not have seen it beforehand. I'm sure Sony will fix this eventually. Like you said, though, not a big deal. Personally, I plan on painting mine flat black.

And those burn marks from Xbots are definitely fake. The first looks like an obvious lighter burn. The 2nd one looks like a dirt smudge. Trying hard to distract from the X losing comparisons.

While not a huge issue at first glance, it should cause people to wonder what's causing this to happen in the first place, and in a similar area across many different PS5's. Also this machine has been out for a very limited amount of time and this is already happening, it will probably advance with age. Is this just discoloration or a wearing of the material?

If this issue is widespread enough, and people don't try to be smartasses towards people with the actual issue and DEFEND SONAY tooth and nail, then perhaps SONY will do something(Send out a NEW PANEL with a better plastic) for the effected consumers. Everyone with a PS5 paid quite a pretty sum of money for it, they all deserve to have it function and look the way it did out of the box if they treat it properly.

I've read that it's a result of the injection-mold process via which the panels are made. So, I'm assuming that it doesn't worsen over time but is a permanent mark that remains the same, like a birth mark.

I'm not being an ass, this is a tiny, barely visible mark on something that doesn't cost a "fair amount of money". A fair amount of money is what a car costs, this is a games console, it has a small mark on it, who cares? It sits in a unit under the TV. People must not have much going on in their lives if this is something that gets posted on the Internet for discussion and complaint.
A fair amount of money is relative to the individual.

Are you one of those people since you're posting in this very thread?

Seems like you have some ego issues.

If that's true then that's another strike against Sony's lack of Q&A before sending these machines out to customers.

If it is the actual real answer then that's reassuring to people with the issue with PS5's hopefully Sony will see THEIR mistake and help the customer.

A faint, barely visible mark is not a lack of quality control. You're blowing this out of proportion.

Furthermore, every manufacturing process produces undesired characteristics in products, and quality control assures that said characteristics are minimal - not necessarily absent. This is why some TV manufacturers don't accept a very small number of dead pixels as a basis for returning a TV; the TV manufacturer determines that a specific maximum number of dead pixels is tolerable and meets their standard of quality control.

I have to derail this thread, but it's still color relatetd. One of my packages has green PS symbols on it, the other shadowy grey. Should i be concerned?

So after seeing a few people post concerns with "burn" spot on there PS5 shells i started to take a close look at mine. I did notice a small area of discoloration arounf the center of the left panel in almost the same spot as othere have complained about. Now mine was very minor and was in a perfect circle as you can make out in the pictures. It has a pure white color to it in that circle and the rest of the panel is greyish. I poped of the panel to see if it was heat related and what i found was quite interesting. There is a circle shaped grove on the inside of the panel in the exact spot of the outside discoloration. The plastic is way thinner here and it is also the focal point of the entire warped shape to the shell. There were no indication of overheating on the inside and every time i felt the system in that spot during play it was warm at worst. My conclusion is that the contort of the shell with minor heat coupled with the thin plastic in that area is whats causing the color change (like when you bend plastic). Annoying but nothing to be concerned about and a shell swap or paint job will easily fix the issue.

Seriously?

Seems like mine has it too.. sigh..

As long as this isn't being caused by the console melting the plastic or some crazy shit like that.. it's embarrassing but whatever I guess. I'll buy a PlayStation sticker and put it over that.. simple

I want to mention though that sometimes it sounds like the plastic on the console is moving. I've seen a few people mention it online and they said it's normal and just the sound of the plastic adjusting or something? Like it literally just sounds as if sometime like touches the ps5 plates and makes them tighter.. that kind of sound..

For example, this evening after having it on for over 5 hours it made that sound when I turned it off. I felt around the console and it didn't feel hot at all so..

IMO that's not normal. If there is noise then there is movment. If there is movement then there is wear on joints. That could rattle as fuck in few years (depending on number of cycles).

The real question is if it actually shipped like that and people are only just noticing or whether it happened after having it in situ for a bit. Also I think people need to get off OPs back a bit. I don't think they were trying to cause shit, just share the info.

Depends if mines going to look like a pigeon took a shit down the side whether I will survive or not. Don't want no shit stain down my PS5 to be honest with you.
Mine is like a little dark circle and it looks like it's just where the plastic has been moulded. Pretty obvious by eye but can't get a photo of it so no-where near that brown stain thing which looks like it has had some outside help to look like that.

I think it's a flow mark - probably caused by the mold not being fully up to operating temperature. Probably should have been caught by QA, but I would guess they were working flat out to make the machines for the launch and stuff like that can get missed.

There is actually quite a balancing act on a piece like that - if there isn't enough cooling then the center of the part can overheat and discolor the plastic - if there is too much cooling, you get flow marks where the plastic comes in from both sides and joins up when it's no longer completely fluid.
