PS5 Size Comparison

I'll ask again: What is your source on this? Or are you guessing?
You didn't saw pictures? Are you blind? Multiple people tried to scale is with many different methods to get it's size. Everyone gets similar results which is around 9x40cm.

I'll take this as "I guessed" :messenger_tears_of_joy:
As I've shown, the PS5 is less long than the XSX is thick. We'll wait for top view images to compare depth. But the PS5 has to be massively more 'deep' to make up for the XSX height.

Design is great! But XSX is more conservative one. Maybe more people will like it more. I hope it still fits into my hifi cabinet like Pro or PS3, but really Im not sure.
If it fits, Ill be absolutely happy.

So they probably wanted to fit into hifi component size. Just looked on some Yamaha reciever and it has 43,5cm width. Its probably not stackable but at least it should fit into hifi rack.

Even if it's only 20cm, which is much less than any console except PS2 slim, it still would have bigger volume than XSX.

Has the look of a console ever changed a purchasing decision? Personally speaking they could make it in the shape of a huge piece of cow dung and I'd still happily buy it the day I can play demons souls on it.

It seriously looks like one of those GAM-Rz (or whatever) brand PCs. The size is a function of thermals, can't really be helped. But the design just looks so wonky.

Of the two, MS made the right call on design. In this case at least, less is definitely more.

A bluray disc is 12cm wide, the drive slots are what, 13cm? The ps5 looks to be about 4 times that based on the OP pic so, roughly, 52cm/20"/1.7ft high

Holy shit, this is a huge-ass machine...

As someone who loves small consoles like the Dreamcast, the Gamecube or the PC Engine, this thing is a nightmare. Where am I gonna put that one with all the others consoles around ? Ffs Sony, oof indeed...

Points for Microsoft for delivering a smaller (not small) machine.

You don't get the option to go chopping bits off the PS5 to fit it into a space like its Tetris though. The device has a footprint (the stand) and a height (taller than anything else) which automatically gives it a volume that it is going to take up which is by the looks of it the largest in console history. The XSX takes up the space of its dimensions exactly because is a square shaped box with parallel sides. The PS5 with its tapered flowing lines doesn't take up less space than it's widest, tallest and deepest dimensions.

I never said it did but by main point is that the PS5 is only a bit longer than the XSX is thicker. And if you Google pics of TV stands you see that a whole lot of them tend to have long narrow spaces rather than big high spaces.

Whatever you need to say to justify things to yourself. The PS5 is a massive console whichever way you look at it and it will be equally difficult to accommodate in a media unit as the XSX.

lol I'm pretty sure nearly all TV stands can hold both without problem. The whole issue is being blown out of proportion by both sides.

Original PS3 was too big as it was. I had trouble in transporting it.

Can't believe ps5 is even bigger. I just hope it's ok with laying it on side.

How far does it go back? Is it square, like PS4 slim?

That's more important than height to me, since my shelf is quite shallow.

Just to be clear, (going off that chart) you can just about fit the PS5 within the XSX:

Except Sony have made it long rather than wide.

Probably so that, you know, it can actually fit into one of these things...

EDIT:
Actually I could have even moved another part showing that in terms of sheer bulk, the XSX is WAAAAAYYY bigger:

Doesn't the ps5 have much width than the xsx? It seemed so in the reveal. We'll have to wait for the dimensions to be revealed but I don't think your hipotesis is so clear

Wow, it is even bigger than I imagined. PS5 actually DWARFS the Alienware X51 in size, and the X51 is an absolute monster in size.

Here is a video that gives a sense of the size of the X51:

I honestly think that the PS5 looks bad.

But, I also gotta give the props to Sony for at least trying something....

I rather have someone try something different and fail, than just make a simple box and call it the day.

Damn, at first I thought it was pretty much the size of a One X, but seeing this looks like is the size of a PC case.

Luckily I've enough space, but close to my Switch it going to looks like a huge monster.

I'll take functionality over style though. The XSX is designed with cooling and nothing else in mind. I can't quite describe what Sony are going for here, but it's certainly bold.

The thermals could be just fine though. I mean it's bigger than the X1 and that console wasn't loud or hot.

...absolute monster in size.

Giant Enemy Slab

I don't think it's 'bad' - sort of looks like a prop from any generic sci fi movie from the last 20 years but the 'gamer' flourishes sort of work against it too. It's not going to age well.

Interestingly, quite a lot of the fan mock-ups looked more aesthetically pleasing and significantly, leant in to the Playstation legacy with trim/badges/color schemes as well as seeming more utilitarian at the same time.

The stand is amateur hour though - especially with it being required to use the console in either orientation. Would be audacious if that's a paid add-on.

It was supossed to be even weaker so they decided to OC it so had to make the console bigger to offset the extra heat.

That's not something you do at the last minute though. Also the cooling system would have to be changed as well otherwise just making the system bigger doesn't do much.

The Alienware X51 has a volume of 10000cm3 (34cm x 9.5 cm x 31 cm).
The XSX has a volume of 6750cm3 (30cm x 15cm x 15cm)
If this is right, the PS5 is at least a 40% bigger than the XSX.
I suppose that's the price to pay for those high clocks

Well... If the PS5 has heating problems I will agree with you.
The thermals could be just fine though. I mean it's bigger than the X1 and that console wasn't loud or hot.

Absolutely and I hope that is the case (that there are no heat problems). But the curves and horns are the things that confuse me, the horns in particular as they serve no purpose (Other than style).

The fat bum for the drive would look better if it didn't curve back in and they just owned the fatness and used the extra space for airflow or something. I don't know.

It's huger than a mug! But I LOVE the design of this thing. It looks sexy as hell. Like a console an alien would be playing on.

why are the ps3 and xsx not properly proportioned look a the disc slot and the extra space not covered by the red line. distinctly looks like those two have been resized
Because the actual disk slot on those does not actually go all the way across.
