Sony may have headed off planned weekend attack

If it does rumble on until E3 you can bet Microsoft won't be able to bite their tongue any longer either.

Wanting PSN back up Vs. epic E3 press-conferences. Ultimate GAF dilemma :/

If it gets near that point, I will have sold my PS3 so I'll be betting on the drama. I picked a drop-dead date out last week, and will stick to it.

This sucks. I was so into Mass Effect 2 and just finished it this weekend. Now I'm ready to jump into the downloadable content and I can't get anything due to this being down. Sony, you're costing companies money with this downtime and upsetting your loyal fan base even more.

Why the fuck are people flipping out over the May 31st date?

Haven't we always known that the store wouldn't be up until much later after online play is restored?

PSN restored this week (hopefully) than the Store up by the 31st.

For this week read last week.

It's like Groundhog Day.

Wow, people really need to calm down. I love playing my games, but there are plenty of other things to do. Don't rush Sony or the same thing will happen because there will be flaws if they rush. It won't kill anyone to wait for PSN to get back up and you don't have to play online constantly. I remember a time when there wasn't online gaming and people were just as content with their games.

They're freaking out because they clearly don't know how to read, and they like jumping to conclusions.

Maybe they got what they needed and now shut it down so they can use it for other stuff. :P
I wonder about this as well. I would be quite surprised (assuming that this IRC log mentioned in the CNET article is only a few days old tops) if Sony let one server to be up in these days if they know that it can be a security risk, especially if it is a PSN server. But it would be cool if they used it as a honeypot before they shut it down.

am I the only one who doesn't feel the store is hard to navigate?
No, in fact I rarely have trouble with the store especially compared to how the ps store was at launch. Was basically the ps3 web browser in disguise.

So what the hell is Sony doing? Rebuilding the entire security system from scratch?

it would be pretty cool if sony wrote their own OS running on custom hardware to get around this. that would be the best way to make it secure.

There will be flaws no matter what. All that matters is if Sony has proper procedures in place to deal with them, which it seems like they didn't have before.

At some point, the cost of them delaying the re-launch is going to be more than the cost of the hack in the first place. At the very least they need to get MP gaming and code redemption back online.

While I am not one of the ones freaking out you have to be fair and say Sony has not been very upfront about the timeline. Which really does indicate they have no idea when PSN will be up exactly. It is their own fault for not being more clear.

The US store is quite good, but some of the other stores for other regions are kind of a pain in the ass to navigate.

Everyone wants the xmb to be XBL'd out.

I didn't even feel like I owned my 360. With all that advertising and sponsorship, I felt like I should get the system for free. On top of that, it's a bitch to navigate.

Yeah, there are a lot of good things about XBL but the UI for the 360 isn't one of them.

With this and the (while still unconfirmed) rumors about PSN not being up until the 31st, I wonder if the hackers weren't actaully successful over the weekend. Maybe Sony put up something as a test, no sensitive data to get, just something up to test the protections, and the hackers made short work of it.

This news isn't new. On April 30th they said that online play functionality would go up first and then the store would follow later in May. That's why the original story from Bloomberg noted that Sony's plans to have it fully functioning by the end of the month are unchanged.

They are finally underpromising... about time. Now its time to over-deliver and get us fully up and functioning by the 20th.
Let's hope this is an instance of "underpromising".
We really don't know that yet.

Wonder if there's any chance of them fixing the bullshit "you can't buy this bundle because you own a piece of the content" policy while the store is down...

More the missing of one deadline with no comment combined with the reassertion of the second deadline.

So instead of 2 phases you give the impression of just 1, people just want a date to focus on. Which hopefully Sony will tackle today with some comment about it, unless they are just happy to let this cycle keep repeating.

I haven't put it in the OP because the new story isn't new news, like the thread title says. I'm only posting Sony-published stuff

:) Cool. Thanks to you and the others for clearing that up and keeping us up to date on this stuff.

This is super shitty news, and if I were Bethesda/Splash Damage, then I'd be asking for money to compensate me for Brink losses.

I've never received this message. I got a costume pack for free for SFIV and was still able to buy the costume pack bundle.

i wonder if all those HOME addicts have finally gone to play something else.

I'd like to think they all went outside and tried dancing randomly in front of strangers in the street.

Sony's stock price has nothing to do with their profits. The stock price just says how much the company is actually worth. You'd basically now need 2.01 Billion US Dollars less to "buy" Sony.

This whole thing probably affects Sony's profits as well, but while Sony's actual profits influence their stock prices (a company that's making a lot of money is worth more than a company that isn't) you can't say that Sony lost profits just because their stock price dropped.

Terrible, uninformed article. Now is a time to buy? WTF is a film student doing writing a financial article?
Yes, now would be a time to buy. I'd wait a bit longer as we don't know if we already have all the bad news. Buying stock when there's bad news about a company is good. Sell it when there's good things to say about it. In the case of Sony you can expect there to be good news in the future...

that's why it's called testing. they have to test it to make sure everything's going to work out okay. if they see problems they have to fix them and adjust the launch date.

haven't you played portal?

What region are you in?

On my US account, I cannot see the individual costume packs for vanilla SFIV because I bought the bundle. I cannot see the bundle for the SSF4 super complete costume pack because Amazon gave me the classic super costume pack for free and I redeemed it.

I pursued this enough to be in contact with representatives from Sony corporate and was offered a partial refund/credit eventually, but their initial solution to allow me to buy the SSF4 super complete costume pack (which I could find through search even though I could not see it while browsing normally) was to revoke the "license" granted to me through the Amazon preorder code, allowing the super complete pack to show up for purchase (this didn't work, however, because they apparently couldn't revoke licenses granted through redeemed codes, only from PSN purchases paid for through the account's PSN wallet).

If they want to redesign PSN, I'd be perfectly happy with the Qriocity layout. I tried it out during its first free month on the ps3 and really enjoyed the look of it. It was incredibly fast as well unlike xmb.
