Pyre |OT| We Carry The Fire

Yeah, the one for prevailing in a rite with the 12 stars in the campaign seems pretty hard. Especially since it takes a while to unlock them all.

That one only took me two tries. First try was with an experimental team, then I restarted and brought out my A Team, which were stacked with maxed Talismans that add to your pyre and subtract more from theirs.

Never got the trophy for 40 pyre damage though, and send Jodi away too early for another.

The Versus Mode Master difficulty ones seem cruel because you can't use Talismans to balance out any of the disadvantages and a lot of the characters' abilities are stripped.

Spoilers for the end of the game:
I have just read that you can get that in the second to last rite, where no one shows up. If they don't change it, I'll definitely get it that way on my next playthrough. I'll be trying to get it fairly though, that's for sure; besides,
I need to lose a rite for that other achievement.

Finding the standard difficulty to be pretty easy. I'm about 3 hours in, just beat the
Wyrm team
in the Rites. Does it get significantly more difficult or should I just up the difficulty? I think my Pyre has only been hit once out of the 6 or so Rites I have won.

Yup, it'll ramp up. If you feel it's still too easy then I suggest upping the difficulty.

For the last one you can just reload the last checkpoint after the end of the game.

Awesome! Thanks! I wasn't sure how much more I have before the end, so I didn't want to just breeze through the whole way to the end. I'll press forward a bit before I bump it up.

I'm a huge fan of Bastion and Transistor. I was just able to give Pyre a download and will be digging into it tonight.

It's my most anticipated game of the year, so I couldn't be more thrilled!

Huh, I'll try playing like that. Think I don't have the reflexes to do that though.

Speaking of reflexes, the reflex/reaction time titan star is, admittedly, the only one I like to use. It makes everything more difficult but doesn't gimp you in the slightest. That's one I really recommend playing with on. It basically turns Hard into Very Hard.

It's a good Titan. the aura increase and Hope modifier makes the enemies even more formidable without depowering you directly.

I was really disappointed with the combat. The systems work and everything, but honestly I just really disliked playing the Rites. Ended up refunding it after finishing the second (maybe third?) Rite.

Loved everything else about the game - but given how much all your choices are mostly impacting the stats and stuff that all feed into the combat - I don't think it would have ended up doing much for me.

Can tell they put a lot of passion in to the game though!

Well yes, but I want to see the consequence during the game :D

I assume
you can lose a few and still get the same ending. I'm also assuming you play until you're down to 3 in your party, which is why the amount of Rites is always nebulous. I kind of want to play through again a lose every match, liberating all the adversaries to see what happens.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but any reason this isn't being released on the Xbox One? I know Bastion was published as an Xbox Live Arcade title, so did Supergiant have a falling out with Microsoft, because Transistor is not on Xbox One either.

finished the game.

story is soo predictable it made me upset. i was waiting for a twist that never came ;<
got what i think is perfect ending also
plan succeeded, reader free, the only 3 remaining exiles are those who dont care about being exiled - volfred, hag and rhae (bae). fuck that demon asshole who rammed my ship. too bad son

Well, game just pissed me off the first time.

Shae got banishment sickness just in time for my first fight with Oralech. She was my star player and his team is insanely brutal on the highest difficulty

Shamelessly bumped it down to easy for that match. One of my very few true pet peeves in games is denying me my preferred characters. I realize it's to make you 'mix it up' but crippling me right before the hardest match in the game just felt gross.

Anyone got tips for Pam, Gilman, or Ti'Zo? Trinkets, talents, etc? I've sent off Hedwyn and Ruky and these two just don't feel as swift. I still have Shae but I could use a second fast reliable teammate.

If you can do the Scribe's trial for Ti'zo, his legendary taliman
gives him unlimited stamina when it's fully upgraded. combined with his ability that improves his zip/flutter speed, he can get around the field really easily.

I don't really want spoilers, just an idea of how far in I am. I just beat
the tree dude who Sandlewood told me not to trust
. Am I more than halfway?

Pamitha -
Incredibly good at defense and banishing enemies thanks to her aura tackle (B/O button move) which overrides the auras of others. Go down the tree that makes it so she can burst after doing it and you can take out the enemy team easily. Didn't really use her as a consistent scorer, too slow for me.

Ti'zo -
Who I'd recommend. God tier, my favorite scorer, but he's good at everything. Just very fast and versatile with his dashes and flying, AI can't really handle his zipping around with his dashes. Go down whatever skill tree, just make sure to do the scribe trials and save up some star dust because the upgrading the trinket he gets makes him insane.

Gilman -
Extremely fast, pretty good at simply rushing and scoring, is awkward on defense/banishing enemies imo. Pro-tip: his throw distance is bad but is almost instant, so if you get his movement down you can rush towards the goal and throw it in right before you hit it consistently.

edit: Tagged just in case, but just talking about the mechanics and abilities of those characters.

So I keep getting crashes on the howler mission and tried to just not attack any of them (I stand off to the side)... Still crashes. Lame. I'll probably email PSN support for a refund. It has happened like 10 straight times -_-

Shame, because I was enjoying the game

I mentioned this in a recent video. Supergiant seems to be aware and have a patch ready for release shortly, it seems, that will hopefully solve those problems. I had crashes on both my PS4 and the Pro. It's pretty frustrating.

Welp, just finished. I was really happy with how the game ended, the campaign drags a bit in the middle as the rites start to get stale, but the last act hits like a truck from a story perspective and they mix things up just a little to keep the rites from grating that much.

I think ultimately I liked this game more then Transistor but not quite as much as Bastion, but that's still really high praise considering how much I love both of those games.

Finished the game yesterday. Ended up enjoying the rites more than I expected. The soundtrack and art were exactly what I expected from supergiant - absolutely superb. I would've liked a bit more interaction with the characters, or had all three opposing team members been given personalities, but the game is great as is and it's understandable there probably wasn't the resources for this.

I can't get over how nice the fire looks in this game.

Same. I just had 12 crashes in a row on the Howler fight. Tried killing them faster, tried killing none, tried boost on and boost mode off, tried with relic equipped and without, still crashed. I am going to go play the Nioh DLC and try Pyre again after patches. Really a kick in the nuts, given my hype level for this game and how much I was enjoying it until then...

It seems like the last rite doesn't count for the 12 Stars achievements, not sure why. At the very least, I did beat it but I didn't get the achievements. Maybe you can't restart?

For those who enjoy SG games, I loved Bastion but didnt really 'get' Transistor, it seemed overly complicated with the upgrade systems etc. Ive tried 3 times to get into it and never really did. Is Pyre like that at all?

I didn't really get Transistor either, but I love Pyre, so I'd say no it's not anywhere near as complicated. There are some very straightforward skill trees for characters, and talismans/items you can equip that give stat boosts but that's basically it.

Okay, I just hit Hedwyn's trial and I am pretty disinterested at how the difficulty just spiked.

I can't figure out how to beat this, and the game was pretty easy until this point. Pretty frustrating now. I need difficulty to be ramped, not spiked without teaching me anything.

If there's one thing to complain about with the visuals, there were quite a few areas and scenes - mainly when you're traveling around in the wagon - that had distorted background assets which look kind of awkward. It seems like they took high res drawings and tried to scale them down to add more stuff in the background or give it a pop-up book aesthetic, but it looks really scrunched and adds a bunch of aliasing. Or it's an actual issue and stuff just didn't load in properly for me, I donno. I took a couple pictures, they don't really spoil anything but at least one of them is probably around halfway through the game. The stuff right next to the wagon in each shot best demonstrates what I'm talking about:

These were taken at 1440p, cranking it up to 4k on my monitor didn't help. I'm curious if anyone else noticed this, it seemed more prevalent in the later areas. Still looked great overall, of course.

Well, first of all, the trials are optional. If you can't beat, you can try changing your strategy (I don't remember exactly what was Hedwyn's challenge); maybe try banishing most of the others and then rush in?
Also, if you can't beat it now, you can wait till you level him up or you get better talismans. I found the quickness one to be most helpful in pretty much all the trials.

Honestly, unless it's those screenshots, it does look like it's not loading properly. It was much crisper on my end.

I swear the animation of the Rite book opening is graphically one of the most impressive things this gen. Like, not even on just an artistic level, the sheer quality of the lighting, the way it moves, is incredible, on par with or above something out of Uncharted 4 or Crysis 3 or the like.

Obviously this is a much smaller game, and there's no way that kind of detail could be in full-sized 3D world, but it doesn't take away from the fact Supergiant packs insane amounts of graphical quality into a 12-man team's games.

honestly, rites themselves imo the least interesting part of the game, so if you are having difficulty - just go to options and set the game on easy, and dont feel bad about doing so.

Thank you, I thought I was the only one who actually gasped when that thing first appeared :p

I don't know how to feel about thos game yet. I'm like three-four hours in, but I don't understand if it wants to be a visual novel, a branching paths story, a stat based ARPG, FIFA with magic. It's all unravelling a bit too slow and it feels unfocused. I will give it more time of course, because the charm and visuals+sound is godlike. The music reminds me of Diablo II for some reason.

I'm loving the combat so far, love the aesthetics, love the lore, and am excited about where the story goes. I just
beat the second liberation rite
, how far am I in?

Finished the game. GAME ENDING SPOILERS obviously.

Towards the end when characters I was interested in started dwindling it became more and more of a chore. But I'm glad they reduced the # of rites between liberation rites towards the end. Story seems to have been HEAVILY focused on characters and group dynamics, with the overarching story being more of an afterthought. I'm OK with this but it is not something games do usually.

Never lost a single match on normal, but there were some very close calls. Mostly because there are so many characters it takes a bit to get used to some of them. Maybe I should have done more practice rites.

In the end I had these 3 characters remaining:
- Moontouched girl
- Winged girl
- Snake person
I chose moontouched girl to be liberated, but due to TWIST!! I decided to choose Mr. O the demon.

Towards the end I was skipping dialogue because the story was heavily focused on chars, and I wasn't interested in the leftover cast. And because overarching story just kinda was there, it reduced my enjoyment somewhat. But otherwise an excellent game.

8.5 / 10

Isn't that just a prerendered video clip?

edit: Yep. Look for GuidebookOpen.bik in the game files.

Man, the father you get in the game the less good the controls start to get, it isn't precise enough to make quick decisions, sometimes I pass and I get bum rushed by enemies with an aura twice their size because my input took a second to register. Or sometimes characters run around the enemy pyre instead of going in it because the turning angle is kinda big.

I'm fighting against that witch, I get a -20 pyre penalty at the start, they do 15 to 30 damage each dunk and get jump like half a kilometer. Three hits and game over, restart trial. :(

Got the platinum last night.

On my second play through I decided to go the polar opposite way:

I lost all the Liberation Rites, and allowing my adversaries to always be liberated. Unlike I expected, the game's structure is static as you still play the same number of Rites. You end up sending all but 2 or 3 people back to the Commonwealth, and all your people are stuck in the Downside. Also somewhat disappointing, The Plan doesn't succeed, but the end result is still the same as the Highwing Remenants swoop in to take down the Commonwealth. While some of the stories were cool, I was hoping everything would be a bit more dynamic.

There are also a few other things in the campaign I'd have liked to see more of to break up some of the monotony of the repeated Rites. It's kind of weird that there was only a single howler fight, and that one instance of using Sir Gilman to clear a path. I could have used more of that stuff.

As for some of the trophies that I had to mop up the second time:
I did the 40 Pyre damage with
Jodi with max Glory through Vocations and The maxed Talisman that adds pyre damage.
I still somehow missed the New Alliance prompt - probably because I was skipping text and not talking to people in the wagon - but
it can be got in Sandra's Practice Mode as well.
And for the Master Vs with 6 Titan Stars, I picked
+30 Adversary Pyre, both the ones about 5 Pyre damage, the +50% Stamina, the Return when all 3 banished, and (I think) the nebulous one about enemy quickness and movement. I avoided all the ones that added +8 stats.

There's a guide on steam with completely different approaches that sounds easier.

Also, the flames in the pause menu are hypnotizing.
