Quakecon 2007

Trailer time! Incredibly detailed character models and environment, depth of field, camera following fly buzzing around, even fly is incredibly detailed. NPC addresses screen, good facial animation. Numerous driving scenes, looks sort of Motorstorm-esque. Game title is Rage.

Hmm not sure if I care for anymore racing games personally.

"That is the name. Rage is the game we've been working on internally, and there's quite a story behind it." Talking about when id was deciding on next game. Initially, after Doom 3, id was working on a different game. First working on dark survival horror island game codenamed Darkness. "Obviously somebody else has already picked up that name now."

:lol

No doubt it was!

"Hollenshead: id Tech 5 will run equally well on any platform, not in any company's pocket, "and for you press, you can print that."

:lol
We need an new "Q3A vs. UT" era!!

Yeah, a bit disappointing. Hopefully it will do something unique to set itself apart.

Lots of love within id for the road warrior kind of atmosphere--running over people, not just shooting them.

More carmaggedon than motorstorm

EDIT: Following this awesome press conference through a live blog sucks

Oh shit that's a good thing.

Yea it does suck but atleast we have something.

DS is 1/1000th of the power of a top-notch platform like the ones that will run Rage. Rage is apparently massive, will ship on 2 DVDs or one Blu-ray.

O_O

What does Left 4 Dead have to do with Quake? Or am I missing the point entirely here?
Nothing. id puts their games on STEAM, STEAM advertises one of its biggest upcoming game at Quake-con.

I'm trying to decide whether to hit purchase or not on the superpack... damnit this is tough
Yeah me too, I'm trying to decide between the superpack and just the quake pack with a few other individual games.

The doom pack is more temtping to me. I still own my Doom 3 but everything in it is nice. Wouldn't mind running throught Doom 2 one more time and I don't think I ever played Final Doom.

I was thinking Quake pack + Heretic + RTCW, but then I'm right up there at the $60ish mark. Might as well buy the whole thing.

What's up with Carmack serious talking about the DS platform? If he take the DS seriously, that means that other westerns developers will which means that my dream of great quantity of good DS western games will become true? Awesomeness.

Yeah that's the thing, the whole pack is such an amazing deal. $62 gets you every Id game. Jesus Christ, Steam is awesome.

A DS remake/port of the Doom RPG would be pretty sweet. So would Commander Keen DS.

Commender Keen man, Commander Keen

Oh... boy.

Another Quake Arena game based on Tech 5.

The Quake/UT rivalry is reborn, and I couldn't be happier.

So, that tech demo was really what the game will be like? Hmmm.
:D

Really though you'd think they'd slap together a demo reel without any of it being part of an actual product?

Carmack is well underway working on the DS. The platform is getting Orcs and Elves.

Wasn't there commander keen up to 5 and 6 ? where are those? or am I just making this up.

Will seriously think about buying this pack. great pack iD!

He's actively planning the next Quake arena game using Tech 5 according to the 1up interview

"Quake III: Arena remains my favorite id game because it was so pure a concept. It wasn't our most popular game, but it was popular enough," he says.

"I still take a degree of pride in the fact that there's still a bit of me, a bit of Quake I code, left in the Source engine. Try looking sometime and you'll probably still find comment fields from Robert Duffy and myself." Laughing now, he adds, "I look through it and think, I wrote that 10 years ago." They never started with a clean sheet of paper. They had the Quake I license, built Half-Life on it and just kept building and creating on top of that."

Interviews with Carmack, etc. about today's announcements.

It's still about 50% run and gun, it's got adventure elements, a lot of driving elements as well.
With the big wastelands you can get out of your car, you can drive everywhere, go into little caves, talk to people, we have a better inventory system--it has some adventure elements, too -- but this isn't an RPG."

I'm quite intrigued now. Sounds pretty unique, I'll definitely keep my eye on this.

"Brought in some new people to start staffing up, eventually will grow to team of 20-30 people working on Quake 3 Arena game powered by id Tech 5"
:O

Visuals have never been the key thing--people used to run with all graphics settings turned down. "The core gameplay goodness was there." "Quake Arena was always my favorite game, my favorite id game." Not the company's biggest blockbuster, but "I have always liked the simple, straightforward and elegant game." These days gamers like big intricate productions, which is why Carmack lets Willits head up design and he sticks to tech. Working with Apple to ensure Quake Zero will run on Mac. id is a private company, so he can talk about unsigned projects; so while everything tonight is not guaranteed, it's stuff id is trying to do.

~~~
5:05: Carmack wants to get oscilliscopes out and measure where every single tiny bit of latency is coming from, everywhere from network code to mouse inputs and everywhere in between. Will be easy to do on Mac because he can work with them and they own all the hardware on the computer.
Not a typical butchered online multiplayer game confirmed!
That's so true! After all these years, no game can touch QIII and it engine pureness. This engine is so sharp and all the games using it are among my favorites FPS ever. A real QIII successor please. :)
i took the plunge for $62
