Quantum Break PC performance thread

I guess they kept 4xMSAA forced on even without upscaling? That would explain the performance issues perhaps.

It seems so, and the reconstruction is still in place since there is still alot of "blur" when moving the characters.

I'm still not sure if I should get a 980ti or wait for Nvidia's next chipset.

Right now I'm running a 780 which I bought for sevenhundred euros a week after launch...

Should I wait or will the perfomance gap not be that high?

I'd wait, since it appears like Nvidia cards currently struggle with DX 12. I'm guessing this will be corrected with Pascal.

Only two months or less until Pascal\Polaris arrives, better wait.

Jesus christ it really looks like they have to remove all of those shitty "features" of the engine step by step, goddamnit.

Here's to hoping they don't lose interest halfway through...

Unplayable on a 980ti at 1440p with upscaling off, most of the time it feels like low 20´s high 10´s in terms of fps.

because that's exactly what it is. To get stable 30 fps at 1440p I had to turn down 2 settings to high instead of ultra. Can't remember off the top of my head but it sure pissed me off. Struggling to get 30 fps on top of the line pc is dumb no matter how you slice it.

Allright.

Im just hoping thar it will be compatible with my motherboard (msi z87 g45)

Why wouldn't it be compatible? I see no reason why it wouldn't.

This is sort of straying off topic, so I'll just make the comment that with gsync at 1440p using a 980ti, using medium settings, Quantum Break is extremely smooth for me, with the exception of a possible gsync bug.

we we sure upscaling is turning off temporal reconstruction?

I think it´s still happening, the image is miles better but i can still see the softness introduced by temporal reconstruction, and there is a image "drag" when moving the character.

still weird artifacting

Nobody has said whether the frame pacing is fixed.

It's mainly what's stopping me from picking this up.

I'm using a gsync monitor and the game is very smooth now, aside from a possible gsync bug. However, if I disable gsync, game becomes very stuttery, even more so than before they patched it. I didn't see a vsync option in-game (unless I missed it) and enabling vsync from the nvcp didn't help, either.

Is the patch seriously 27gb?

Sorry I may be being petty but if that's the case I'm just going to delete this from my PC. I was at end of chapter 2 before i gave up (980ti) and while mildy enjoyable and interesting the ridiculously slow DL speeds from windows store this game just isn't worth it.

Sorry MS and more so remedy. I wanted to give this a go but you dropped the ball.

Too many other games to play end enjoy without these issues (for me anyway)

Yeah, this game has been a total disaster. I couldn't even download the patch because I was out of space on my SSD. To get around this, I had to uninstall the game and then redownload it to get the patched version of the game! And after I did that, I couldn't even sync up to the cloud, so I lost my previous save. So, I just went ahead and started from scratch. So, yeah, what an absolute clusterfuck!

How do you activate Gsync in this game if there isn't a disable option in the panel ?

Not sure I'm following you, but gsync here works much like any other game. Just enable it in the nvcp, and when you boot up the game, gsync is enabled.

I do feel a bit petty for feeling this way due to patch size but it's just the end of a serious of fuck ups with this game in PC!

If I was really, really enjoying the game I might feel differently but despite some cool effects and mechanics i just wasn't feeling it.

Quite frankly id rather regain the 50gb on my ssd than lose another 27 just to play this.

I don't blame you one bit. Assuming I even end up still playing this game, if I ever do finish it, I'm deleting this game off my SSD. This game is a prime example of what not to do to try and convince a person to move to pc gaming. This game has been nothing but problem after problem.

Which makes it all the more baffling why you need 27 GB of free space in order to download the patch.

Yeah. Windows Store does not appear to yet support deltas. If they change a file, the whole file has to resync.

Microsoft has good intentions with PC gaming, but they can't pull off the software side. Which is amusing because.. They're a software company.

Edit: I don't believe reconstruction is removed.

This is fucking hilarious. Are they actively _trying_ to kill of their UWP platform right on the start or?..

That's because from what I was able to catch patching in UWP is done in a very efficient and not at all ancient way: they copy the contents of the current version to a new folder, patch that copy and then delete the old folder. So to install patches in UWP you have to have at least the same amount of free space on the drive as the size of the app/game you want to patch.

Sooooo it's doing what the PS3 does with downloads? Sounds pretty archaic.

Having tried the patch (Geforce 980ti) the performance seems about the same. I really do hope they manage to find a way to increase performance either vis a game patch or video card driver.

I have free the space needed (now 36GB free) and keep telling me I don't have free space Oo

You need to have enough free space for the entire game (it apparently copies the whole thing to a new folder, patches it and then deletes the old copy). So you'd need somewhere between 60-80Gb free to patch the game.

What I did is moved it to another hard drive, patched it and moved it back.

It is: · Fixed frame timing not matching the refresh rate
Can you guys please explain whats happening with reconstruction tech after patch? Looks like with upscaling option turned off 4xMSAA is still applied even for 1080p+ buffers... at least that would explain huge performance drop. Hope you can let us tweak MSAA setting if thats the case. Such high values probably not needed at high resolutions?

82 GB, I don't that much space in disk
I think it's just a glitch. Or so I hope. It was about 40GB when I left, PC had turned off the monitors when I returned and then it was 80GB and the progress bar was glitched as seen in the screenshot after I woke it up.

hopefully remedy will issue a statement of what exactly the setting does. reconstruction seems to still be happening

This patch is 2.1gb on Xbox One, and they share the same code base (thru UWA).

I think there's a misconception here that's worth addressing. As far as I know at this time there are no UWA apps on Xbox One (some of the built in Microsoft apps might be, you can run dev mode apps at the moment too) and when they are those won't be games. Games on Xbox One don't run under the Windows 10 layer they run under their own specialised OS to get the best performance. There is likely some code shared between the two versions but Quantum Break on Xbox One is not a UWA app and it's unlikely they share the same binary. AAA games will likely never be UWAs on Xbox One which is one reason I've always been so baffled Microsoft refuses to release normal Win32 versions on Windows. The difference in patch sizes is because they are different code running on different platforms and and such the patch sizes won't necessarily correlate, especially when the issues being fixed differ.

Edit: of course this is confusing because of the way Microsoft talks about UWAs. I see why people think it's the same 'app' but I think it's worth pointing out this isn't the case. I apologise if I got something wrong as well.

Cool, you may also want to update the graphics options screen, with the new options (like disabling reconstruction), as well as adding DF's analysis to "Benchmarks & Info" links: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-what-went-wrong-with-quantum-break-pc

"keeping this enabled is highly recommended, as it offers the best visual quality without a significant penalty to performance".

Wut?

I have surprisingly few problems with downloading the patch. The speed is fantastic, almost maxing out my 250mbit connection:
9wFcnyw.png

The only problem I had was that once or twice the download process randomly stopped by itself, so I had to pause and unpause to get it going.

Yeah, it's been downloading rather fine on my end too but it has stopped once and I also had to pause and unpause to get it going again. At 23gb/27gb right now.

I don't know how to measure framerates in real time - but I assume that lack of triple buffering was not fixed? If I disable upscaling in 1080p, then the game seems to be immediately dropping to 30fps. I even downgraded some graphics options by a notch and nothing changed. Still choppy. But the momend I enabled upscaling it was back to smooth 60fps.
I have 980Ti and i7 6700K.

Any way to measure framerate in UWP other than presentmon?

I don't remember a setting for the LOD. Does anybody know what was the default setting before the patch ?

Who knows maybe they have pushed it further. I'll test ultra and high and see for myself.
With upscaling off I expect no more than 40fps at ultra / 1080p.

The patch added the option of disabling the resolution reconstruction:

Upscaling off:

Another couple of options added are film grain toggle and main menu game exit option.

Thanks, Remedy, I knew you could do it =)

Edit: Seems to run kinda ok without upscaling in 1080p on Ultra preset on my 980Ti.
I'll wait for vsync off option MS promised in May before playing it though.
Remedy should also think about adding a motion blur toggle in future patches.

Not keen on the change in lighting. The sharpness improvement appreciated though
