R.Mika confirmed for Street Fighter V

Over-sexualization works for some characters, but some it doesn't. I think it's ridiculous to have Cammy wear a thong while trying to do tactical military operations. But, with R. Mika and Poison is makes sense. I was looking at those more modest depictions in that article of female fighting game girls and I liked a lot of them, but Poison was one where I said "This isn't right for the character." In fact, her expression of her overly sexualized style is a feminist thing. She's in control, and she chooses to be like she is because that's who she is. With her character in particular, telling her she can't be overtly sexual is closer to slut-shaming, given her style and demeanor.

R Mika is distractingly hot in SF5, though. She never came off as all that hot in Alpha, lmao.
FFS it's not a thong. THIS is a thong:

spurs-thong-pink.jpg

Does Cammy wear anything like that? No. What she wears is more equivalent to a one-piece full body bathing suit. Maybe she has a Navy SEALS background?

It's hard to argue that the suit she has makes movement with her style easier to do, and her legs being the centerpiece isn't too different from Chun-Li, who we can agree is not intentional fanservice.

Good read. Solid on some points, less solid on others. Felt sort of Gamergate-y at times, but I get the main point of their argument and am in agreement with it.

So basically the only progressive designs for female fighting game characters are characters like Makoto and Leo. Which are characters who's gender is supposed to be ambiguous/you're supposed to think they're male.

Nice
Without the scarf you'd almost think Leo was Rock with a slightly newer haircut and wardrobe.

This article is shit, I mean look at some of these leaps of logic

"These people do not care about choice. They don’t care about women. They ultimately just want to drag down sexy women and/or women with large breasts."

the point couldn't fly further over their head.

I mean, I am no prude, I like sexy girls. But let's be real. Find me a single female fighting game character that is fat like the new birdie, or rufus, or Bob from Tekken.

You won't.

Or, how about, let's go back a few pages and read any number of reaction posts which can be summed up with "i think this is sexy", and try to show the same coming from any largely female gaming forum talking about male character reveals.

About the most progressive design you're ever going to get for a female FG character is Leo

So, if you're going to post an article that basically is reducible to "don't hate on sexy women, because that is a body type!" then you're just not getting the point at all.

I'm sorry to be the one who tell you this, but if you are so eager to label someone's opinion as shit, you must take one step back and think if maybe your opinion is shit.
The fact that you disagree with something, does not mean you are de facto right.
Also, if you don't like it, don't play it, things are very simple in life, and not all games have to be for everyone. It's not for you, let it go.

Last, but not least, the character design you posted... It's kinda shit, sorry.

Mika must be a very popular character, we are already 50 pages in. Good call Ono-kun!

"Progress" is a female character who people visually mistake for a male?

I guess breasts really ARE evil.

IMO, there's no such thing as a "progressively designed character". True "progress" comes in the form of variety...i.e. it's what the entire CAST of females brings to the table.
When female designs are as diverse as the male designs, THAT will be progress.

Covering a female's body, cutting her hair, and giving her small breasts is not "progress". It could be a first step depending on the rest of the female cast. But, alone? No.

R Mika is nothing compared to Cammy. Cammy's combat bikini (what is she wearing, anyway?) is literally skin tight. I bet I could see her vulva in 4K.

Why is GAF so uncomfortable with characters that show a little sexuality?

Ok, but you two are making different points. I don't think the person who wrote that blog is against having a character that is an overweight woman. She is talking about people who in her mind are body shaming a certain type of "sexy" character. So if a new character in SF5 happens to be a overweight woman, I think that blogposter would be for it. If someone was asking for cammy to be covered up, I think she would be against it.

Anything that goes between the butt cheeks is a thong. One piece or not.

That's a pretty weird design for a fighting game. I'm not sure why fighting in blue jeans makes you "progressive." Does she think she's Bart Gunn or something?

Blue jeans, a stiff leather jacket, and numerous belts are likely going to limit her mobility and flexibility. R. Mika's attire looks much more appropriate and comfortable.

You are right, that's exactly the blogposter's point. But it's easier to judge when you haven't read the article at all.

Natasha from The Eye of the Typhoon.

Makes me think it's some sort of alt costume for Terry Bogard

I've no problem with her costume. My problem is that all the womens faces seemed to stem from the same base model, not being pushed enough becoming hugely generic. Ken and Vega look pretty close too.

This is Mary from the Tobal series. She's pretty much the coolest character in the entire series and one of the strongest as well. (There are 200 characters in the series, btw.) She's dresses in revealing clothing even though she's kind of a fatty. I don't think she's particularly attractive, but she's awesome and there's nothing even slightly inappropriate about her clothing. Whether you're a super sexy chick like R. Mika or a fat pig of a woman, there is NOTHING wrong about a woman dressing in a certain way.

i dunno, something just doesn't sit right when a site that's 99.9% men, many of whom don't seem to have much experience with socialization at all (let alone dating/girls) nor social sciences (all STEM, right?), starts calling everything sexist and problematic.

Either that or it's just really easy trolling bait to pretend like R.Mika is "problematic"
....What?

This article is some of the biggest load of crap I've ever read. Haha. I mean it can literally be summarized as "if you disagree with me you are a prude". So stupid.

Why is GAF so uncomfortable with characters that show a little sexuality?

For me, it's not that she's "showing a little sexuality" because that doesn't even really mean anything. It's simply that the design was already not great, and now it's worse. I still like the character, I like the character's personality, and I like the character's moveset. I will be playing the character.

But the costume design is ugly, always was, and now it's worse. You could show the exact same amount of skin and it wouldn't change the fact this is some bad Borat-remix costume design. Posting pictures of real-life Japanese wrestlers doesn't change that. It reinforces it. Their outlandish, skin-revealing costumes aren't anywhere near as ugly/poorly designed.

A wrestler playfully smacking her bare ass like "I'm going to fucking crush you with this later" isn't particularly offensive to me. Yes, there's going to be a bunch of sexually frustrated manchildren who will slobber all over it, but their reaction doesn't prevent me from taking the character's actions in the manner they appear to be intended (playfully, not overtly sexual).

But the costume surrounding those cut-out buttcheeks is, itself, pretty buttcheeks. It looks bad. It's not accentuating the playfulness of the character, and it's not sexy, either. It's just ugly.

Wow. She looks awesome. I love Toriyama's art.
Is the Tobal series any good, and is it on the PSN store?

Agree with most of what you said.

I think that Leo design is quite nice and obviously female.

LMAO seriously??

As to the article that was posted its pretty off but I will keep my opinions about it to myself as they are a bit harsh.

As to sexy women body types all of them are different, all of them are sexy.

This is pretty much where I'm at.

Chick is cool(her V-Skill is grabbing the mic and doing a fuckin' promo to build heat)...but outfit is UGLY and tacky as shit. The frills, the ponytails, the robin mask, all the weird holes. Shit's bad, b.

Edit: Beaten.

I don't know if making your female characters men with implied vaginas is all that progressive, actually.
There are many women who do dress in masculine clothes.

If they have a small chest or bind that look is certainly achievable by a female. So your comment about it being a male with implied vagina is weird given we doses this in reality.

Leo is certainly progressive even if I don't like her.

and yet her personality shines through through all that darkness.

Feel the exact same way. I'll be waiting for a good alt costume, or the ability to play as her tag team partner.

Leo isn't really that "progressive." It's basically another throwback to King. Who debuted in 1992.

Unless progressive means "what's old is new again."

Also, go track down the reveal thread for Leo. No one really liked her. Don't hear much fanfare for her now either. Glad she's around though. Kind of fun to play as.

Wasnt her gender unknown for a period of time, and subject to heavy debate among tekken fans? Saying she's obviously female just by looking at her in that picture definitely isn't true regardless.

Lol yup, Leo's whole gimmick was unknown gender until TTT2 swimsuits.

It would be like saying bridget is a progressive male character because people thought he was a girl.

Sorry, but Leo looks like a dude. I don't know what game it's from, but if no one told me she was a female I would have never known. King from KoF looks more feminine than Leo.

That's not any kind of progress. Try something else.

Is this from a fighting game? She looks pretty fucking awesome.

She is from a fighting game, and she is an amazing character.

Here are some of her moves from Tobal No. 1:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7B5EZOP1jI

Here's a clip of her dancing from Tobal 2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9qRCoVxol8

She's a wrestler just like R. Mika and she dresses in an similar manner. They are both strong characters who have playful sides. A lot of people who have issues with R. Mika would likely cite Mary as an example of "fucking awesome" character. The biggest difference between them is that R. Mika is sexy in a more traditional way. There's nothing wrong with either character design, of course. Mary's design isn't problematic, and neither is R. Mika's.

OMG Mary from Tobal. So good. If SE came out with a Tobal 3... man.

I'm sorry what were we talking about? Awesome wrestlers in fighters? =P
