Radeon RX Vega thread

It's going to be interesting to see a postmortem on this train wreck and why there's such a massive performance discrepancy per mm^2 of die size. Polaris and GCN 28nm were at least in the same ball park as Pascal and Maxwell at a given die size.

Unfortunately we never got one for the R600 or Bulldozer.

Just small crumbs along the lines.
The 80nm decision for the R600 was deemed to be biggest mistake, at least by AMDs Eric Demers at the times and Bulldozer was a long running project which was first projected for 45nm with SSE5 and FMA4 but ended up in 32nm, with AVX and FMA4, where the latter one wasn't considered anymore by Intel.
Also one major architect suffered from cancer so that had a negative impact on the design.

As for Vega, if software can't help this pig to fly then really something went badly wrong.

I was really hoping to get a cheap Vega card to run 1080p/144fps but you guys are bumming me out, is it really that bad?

It's like when the switch was announced to have Nvidia tech people we're going nuts about how secret sauce nvidia magic would make it as powerful as ps4

I REALLY want AMD to knock this outta the park, but damn near everything i'm hearing about Vega (high temps, pricing, sub 1080 performance, etc) has finally driven me to get a nvidia card for the very first time (1080).

Doesn't help that AMD themselves are being super secretive about it, when they are in no position to do so.

This is only some blind tests prior to the reveal, they're shooting up the price differential between gaming on the two cards....Why is this a bad thing? It's also no secret about vega specs, because they have not been officially revealed. They will not reveal benches to you before siggraph just to curtail or hype your expectations. The product was announced to be fully revealed in 3 days. All we have to do is wait....

Your optimism is admirable.

Honestly, I hope the best for it, I'm just having a hard time being optimistic for Vega since it's crawling to the consumer market with little to no information. I also find conducting blind tests for GPUs, one released and one unreleased with questionable testing methodologies to be kind of weird, if Vega performs well then Vega performs well, and if it offers something praise-worthy wouldn't it be a good idea to shout it out? Be it price price or performance.

Oh well, the curtains will soon open.

I doubt Vega is going to be bad by any means, but we won't know for certain until it's been officially revealed and consumers and reviewers get to try it.

My current situation is, 144Hz Freesync monitor and a GTX 970. My plan was to switch the 970 for the bottom or mid tier Vega so I can hit the 144fps sweet spot in more games, with Destiny 2 being the main goal. At least Vega will be out in time for Destiny 2 PC beta.

Is there any indication that AMD are aiming for a late August release and a sub £300 GPU?

Just built my first Ryzen 5 gaming PC but don't have a GPU and looking for a ~£300 GPU. Equivalent to perhaps a 1060 or 1070 (under £300).

Doubtful. The 1070 alike will probably be cheaper than the 1070. There's already a 1060 level AMD card, the 4-580. Of course the mining boom makes those impossible to find at a reasonable price.

Well I mean Nintendo Switch uses Nvidia. Next-gen MS and Sony consoles could also use Nvidia, the power of ARM64 when you give it a lot of electrons is pretty close to x86 and the modern ARM64 cores humiliate trash like Jaguar today already.

If anything, clock-for-clock it even looks like a regression from Fiji.

Possibly, but has Nvidia burned console bridges, it's probably unlikely they'll be used again (in an MS/Sony console, at least).

Literally waiting on the miners to calm the fuck down so I can get a 580 already. $250 cards marked up to as high as $5-600 is crazy.

The water cooled version is nice enough looking, but the air cooled version is awful looking and I'm guessing will thermal throttle like crazy.

Their stock cards are usually terrible.

Still can't believe there's some people still in denial about how much of a disappointment Vega is though

AMD is the budget brand so they will probably keep working with them.
Anything is possible but by all accounts Nvidia refused to consider prices Sony/MS were thinking about as they didnt feel was worth even shutting down production of their chips to produce products for MS/Sony.

Plus Nvidia has no cpu production. Although if MS/Sony use discrete gpu next time it might become a possibility

NOT HAPPENING!

AMD seem to be controlling all the information and making sure Vega seems to be portrayed competitively and in best possible light at all times .

Well, they're failing. Everybody is expecting Vega to be a huge failure after the FE. Even if their cards are cheaper, Volta is behind the corner. Too bad.

We also learned that Bulldozer was designed with heavy usage of machine assisted layout creation - they later salvaged that trainwreck a bit with rewriting areas by hand

Denver is still a thing and even if their in-house core isn't up to snuff they could just license one of the bog standard ARMv8 designs and still be well ahead of what Jaguar offers.

True, but I think sony and microsoft will try to stay on x64 instead of risc.

Kirankara: I can't believe some people wait for actual facts before making up their minds.

Can someone please get me in the right direction on understanding the naming of AMD cards? I don't understand what is a CPU and what is a GPU here. What is Vega, what is Threadripper, what is Ryzen, what is Zen; i'm so confused.

RX Readon: low-mid tier GPUs
RX Vega: High tier GPUs
Vega FE: High tier GPUs for professional workloads
Ryzen: 4-8 core CPUs with hyper threading
Zen: The code name for Ryzen before release (like NX for the switch, or scorpio for the One X)
Threadripper: AMDs professional / enthusiast level CPUs (12-16 cores with hyper threading).

Oh you mean facts like benchmarks or clock speeds, power consumption...... those kinda facts.

The kind of facts we already have.

What exactly are we expecting to change in next few days??

We don't have these facts about actual consumer Vega. We simply don't!
Consumer Vega might turn out just like Vega Frontier or might turn out to be significantly different (better drivers, deactivated features, higher clock speeds etc. etc.).

We really do.

They're everywhere.

You might not have them, but they're already oot there.

AMD already released drivers for rx Vega launch.

I can't believe such attitudes exist, the official reveal is today, people have waited all this time, but now, people should forget all that and assume Vega is crap and go buy NV cards in droves? amirite?

Whatever Vega is, it's perf or price to perf, there will be a large market for it. The extra 20 dollars a year you would spend on your current bill by buying Vega won't cause a rift between time and space.....

As I've always said, there will be three Vega skus...

56 CU Vega XL vs the GTX 1070
64 CU air cooled Vega XT vs GTX 1080
64 CU liquid cooled (much higher clockspeeds) Vega XTX vs GTX 1080 TI

Talk to me Jasec, if you think this is still not happening....? All we need to know now is the prices or better yet the price to perf ratio on these cards....Even if the liquid cooled Vega comes a hair's nose of the 1080ti and does so at a lower price than that, I think that will be a win for them...we shall see.

Anyways, I'll have to log in on twitter on my mobile to get the live updates, pity it won't be livestreamed, but I'll be locked on.

I also heard that there may be a replacement card for the Polaris series, so maybe a super cut down Vega say 36-40 NCU's is a possibility.....
