How the heck does Harry Potter have better reviews than Lord of the Rings?
giphy.gif

MC avg is lower though

I'd put Batman Begins, Dark Knight, and Winter Soldier above it, to be perfectly honest. But I'm also one of those weirdos who thinks Spider-Man 1 was the better Raimi movie because Spidey 2 goes too far off the rails in spots. The Raimi movies are showing their age.

I haven't seen Winter Soldier, but to me Spider Man 2 has everything I want to see in a comic book movie, and does it the best. Others are good, but that train scene alone was fucking amazing. Goddamn Spider Man was down to potentially have his arms ripped out of his sockets to save a train full of innocent people. That right there is a super hero.

The Two Towers and Return of the King don't follow the book plot 100%, and fans of the books can be a nitpicky bunch.

Potter didn't either. Anyway that chart doesn't exactly say that Potter has overall better reviews, there's a shit-ton of variables there.

Best of MCU
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy
Iron Man

Bad tier:
Thor
Thor: The Dark World
The Avengers: Age of Ultron

The rest is somewhere in between.

Thor 2 is the worst, but what's funny is that it still doesn't approach ultra-bad level like Fant4stic, Elekta, Green Lantern, Batman & Robin. Nothing is really bad about it per se so much as you can't remember too much about it. Maybe a couple of fight scenes but that's it.

I really like that scene, but the scene immediately after it where everyone sees him unmasked is so fucking stupid.

Thor 2 is the worst MCU film by far, but yeah, it's nowhere near those other films. That just shows how amazingly consistent the MCU is.

I'm gonna chalk it up to the HP fanbase being mostly children/teens who didn't care as much about the movie plot deviating from the books.

Avengers went from great to really meh for me over the years. Caps costume, how underpowered he is in the film...combined with the Loki +space aliens combo being kind of dreadful...I find it a far worse film than its sequel.

This might have changed from the last thread about ranking the MCU

Favorite MCU Film:
Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Really Like:
Iron Man
Captain America: Civil War
Guardians of the Galaxy
Avengers
Ant-Man
Captain America: The First Avenger

It Was Fine:
Thor

Take It or Leave it:
Iron Man 2
The Incredible Hulk

Ehhhhhhh:
Avengers: Age of Ultron

Nope:
Iron Man 3

Never seen Thor: The Dark World and at this point it's probably never happening or at least won't happen until we're closer to the third Thor.

I have a feeling if I rewatched OG Iron Man, it would turn out to be shit. I have seen it relatively recently but still...

I saw it recently, it's still great for about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the movie. The final act kind of falls apart due to Marvel's formula of having nonsensical villains. Stane is fine while he's scheming to take Tony's new technology, but once he actually gets into the Iron Monger suit, he makes zero sense and becomes a mustache twirling villain.

The origin of Iron Man, his imprisonment in the cave, and the construction and testing of the suit are all A+ tier.

Iron Man 3 is a good movie

I thought it was the worst of the MCU.
lots of parachuted no-name faceless characters,
anxiety attacks early in the movie disappear in the 2nd half.
attache-detach attach-detach armor pieces overuse,
turned a staple IM character into a joke character,
lame main villain, and cop-out defeat of final villain, and cop-out surgery to reverse Extremis on
Pots

The only one I truly dislike is Incredible Hulk though both Thor movies are by the far the least interesting of the rest.

In no particular order, the only ones that matter: Iron Man, The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Guardians, Avengers, Ultron, and Ant-Man.

Okay, maybe The First Avenger. Maybe.

No particular order within tiers.

Thor: The Dark World
Iron Man 3

I like that The Incredible Hulk was basically CG rampage but on crack so it had a fast tension to it and didn't have a slow trudge like its cousins.

Ranking them is a thankless task. I just want to own them all on Bluray without buying them all individually. Here in the UK, that appears to be impossible. Why isn't there a Phase 1 boxset at least?

There was. You just can't get it anymore.

Ignoring the Netflix shows (namely since I don't have Netflix) and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., here's how i'd rank the Marvel's Cinematic Universe's current offerings from best to worst:

A-tier

3. The Avengers
4. Captain America: The First Avenger

God Tier
The Avengers - Such a cool concept that's great to see come together. Everything about it just fucking works. It's Whedon dialogue at its best, still by far some of the coolest setpieces in the series, and just something that felt like it lived up to the build up. Yeah, the villain is weak, and yeah not everything gets properly developed but this movie is just too much fun to care.
Guardians of the Galaxy - Brings the same kind of charisma and intergroup dialogue that the Avengers did to this relatively unknown property. The dialogue and action is on-point and the entire cast is just simply fantastic and perfectly cast. And of course a great soundtrack. Just a solid space opera.

Great Tier
Iron Man - The one that started it all. RDJ is just fantastic here and there's not a whole lot not to like.
Captain America: Civil War - Feels more like a proper real Avengers 2 than it does a Winter Solider followup, though it manages to do both. Introduces some of the best new characters the MCU has seen in a minute and it's consistently entertaining throughout. Doesn't have the witty dialogue of Avengers or Guardians and the character motivations are a bit iffy but those aren't huge issues.
Iron Man 2 - Yeah I like it. It's not as cohesive or well-directed as 1 but it's a nice followup and, for my money, does a lot of what I liked about the first one over again.

Really Good tier
Captain America: the First Avenger - Just a really solid Spielberg-esque WWII movie, where we get an earnest and sincere portrayal of Captain America. In a bubble there's not really anything else in the MCU like it. It doesn't have the same flavor or humor as the rest of the series and just gets by off of being a pretty darn good movie.
Ant Man - A nice and small scale Paul Rudd comedy. Heavily controlled by the studio for sure but it works here. And Micheal Pena is fantastic here of course.

Good tier:
Avengers 2: Age of Ultron - One of those movies that's endlessly disappointing the first time you see it but better upon rewatch wherein you can focus more on what it does right than what it doesn't. It's kind of a mess; there's too many characters and AoU just spreads itself so thin to develop them. The script is all over the place, Ultron is much less interesting that he should be, and the whole thing just feels like a setup for Phase 3. That being said there are some nice setpieces here and any movie with this many characters crossing over has to be fun to watch to some degree.
Captain America: the Winter Solider - I don't buy the hype. It's well made, well shot, and well directed, but more often than not I just don't care for Spy/Espionage movies and the action didn't really do anything for me. I still enjoyed it quite a bit regardless.

Decent tier:
Thor: the Dark World - I don't think anything about this movie is particularly offensively bad like everyone seems to think, but it's just kind of a ho-hum movie that feels incredibly studio-driven. Loki is really fun here. I have trouble remembering some aspects of it.
Iron Man 3 - I actually like the plot twist, and it's more RDJ Iron Man, but ultimately "Tony Stark goes off on his own to investigate the Mandarin without any Iron Man powers," just isn't that interesting of a premise to me.
the Incredible Hulk - I can't remember much about this one to be completely honest. I remember liking it quite a bit when I first saw it but nothing about it stuck with me and it just didn't leave the same impression that basically every other MCU movie did.

Meh tier:
Thor - Commits the one sin that no other movie in the franchise does of just being straight-up boring. It feels like nothing really happens here. Also feels kind of like a teaser for later movies.
