Ratchet and Clank Community Thread: Rip Ya a New One

Great thread Icy.

Ratchet is one of my favourite Playstation series; might actually be my number one favourite. Can't wait to play the movie tie-in, looks like that same Insomniac magic I fell in love with on the PS2 and PS3.

Love the thread. I can't wait to play a PS4 version of R&C1's Metropolis level, which is still one of my favourite areas in any game.

It's my favourite series and I can't wait to play the re-imagining.

I hope to see more at Paris Games Week.

First off, fantastic opening post OP :D! Has a lot of great graphical design touches and it does a great job highlighting every game in the series; helps newcomers of the series take a look and understand everything.

My first Ratchet and Clank games were Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal. Man, they are classics and still are classics :'). The controls felt perfect, the weapons were fantastic, the level designs mixed shooting and platforming perfectly, the stories were gold and the characters were incredibly charming. I love those games so much that I replayed them many, many times XD!

When I got my PS3 in 2011 to play Generations, Ratchet Future series were some of the first games I got for the console. I loved a Crack in Time a lot and Tools of Destruction while having some flaws (the camera needed work), it was a great way to bring the series to the PS3.

And the PS4 title is the reason I'm getting a PS4 next year, as it looks amazing and after playing it at my local GameStop, I don't need to worry about the controls now (as they feel good and the game runs better than Into the Nexus did). Very excited to see the series coming back in a huge way again :').

When people think of Sony mascots, they jump right to Crash or Spyro mostly. But Ratchet & Clank is the first one that to mind for me; they have been around for decades on PlayStation and really are gaming icons. Hopefully the PS4 release of the reboot will help cement this and have them become huge icons in the modern era of gaming; with a great looking film coming alongside the game, I have hope this will happen :D.

Insomniac was consistently throwing out a great game after great game, unfortunately All 4 One left a bad taste in my mouth, & hopefully the reboot would wash that bad taste away.

I don't necessarily blame Insomniac for all the bad Ratchet games after ACiT, Sony was probably giving them a small budget & they did all they could. It looks like they're getting a proper budget this time, which is great.

EDIT: I should mention that I like the idea of diversifying the franchise, a tower defense R&C game or a 4 player coop R&C game sound cool & should be cool, but they weren't done well, Insomniac should keep working on the mainline entries & Sony should farm those spinoffs to other studios that specialize in that genre.

Only played the original trilogy for a bit on Vita (did the Vita collection ever come out in the US btw?) and thought they were pretty fun.

Which PS3 game would be the best one to start with?

All 4 One was better to me then FFA honestly; it tried something completely new and it was mostly a good game. It just lacked the polish the series is famous for and the weapons did not feel satisfying to use (a big issue in a game centered around using creative weapons).

FFA felt like a half-hearted compromise on a traditional Ratchet game; the gameplay is largely the same as it was in ACiT but the tower defense elements are present now. It was okay, but it wasn't great to me.

I feel that if FFA was scrapped in favor for another year of dev. time for Into the Nexus, it would have been a much larger, grander game. As it is though, its a great return to the classic Ratchet formula but adding in some really clever gimmicks and having a haunting tone that many games in the series do not have. Just wish it was a bit longer.

Insomniac seems to be back now though, with Into the Nexus starting their return to quality and Sunset Overdrive cementing that. I can be really excited about the upcoming Ratchet game knowing that it will be a fantastic ride :).

Well if you care about the story then you should definitely go in order (ToD, QFB, CIT.) CIT is undoubtedly the strongest of the trio in terms of gameplay though, so it's really up to you and how much time you want to invest into the games. Personally, I would say absolutely play all three in order for the full experience but if you don't have time for that or don't want to burn out then go for just Crack in Time.

Edit: Oh, if you want to play all three, don't forget Nexus after CiT.
30 FPS is not that bad :p

FFA was a bit better imo because it just felt better to play, everything you did in A4O felt like it had no impact, and the movement felt kinda weird.

A4O is more fun when playing couch coop though, so I'll give it that. Neither of them were great games though, they were very mediocre at what they were trying to do.

I wouldn't say ITN is a return to form, it was massively better than all the poor spinoffs, but it still felt like a low budget game. Which was Sony's fault and not Insomniac's, I guess.

Love the hell out of this series; great thread OP! Been playing this series since the very beginning, and I'm really happy to see it going strong, in spite of a bit of a dry spell in the later PS3 years. Kudos to those teams for experimenting, though; gotta iterate if you want to succeed.

Also, does anyone know if it's possible to see which Gamestops have the PS4 demo? There are a couple in my area, so I wouldn't mind trying it out.

Great thread for a great series.

I’ve had so much fun with R&C over the years. My favourites are Going Commando (or Locked and Loaded as it was known here in the UK, where, thank goodness!, somebody thought of the children) and Up Your Arsenal (or, as we knew it, ‘3’), though I love all the mainline entries. Didn’t like All4One as much, and I haven’t tried Full Frontal Assault (another title we weren’t allowed – it’s called QForce over here. We were allowed Size Matters though, and references to tools, cracks and booty were all fine apparently.)

I feel the weaponry in R&C is some of the best in gaming. I remember a reviewer commenting once that it was a pity you couldn’t transfer the guns into other games. I could have done with some form of RYNO towards the end of Killzone 2, I know that much. I really love the weapons that transform bad guys into something else - the Winterizer from Nexus is just awesome for a Christmas obsessive like me.

Really looking forward to the PS4 game, and to dragging my grandsons to the cinema to see the movie.

Awesome thread IcyFlamez! Ratchet and Clank is one of my favorite series. When I first got a PS2 all I asked for was racing games, but somewhere along the way I got a OPM demo disc that had Ratchet and Clank on it. I played all the demos but I came back to Ratchet and Clank and I played it all the time! Going back and forth from Blackwater to Metropolis, jumping, wrenching, shooting, getting bolts, it was like nothing else I'd ever played. I'd start it up again the next day and start from scratch and keep going until I'd done everything the demo allowed. By the time I finally made it to the game store Going Commando was already out so I bought it, and played it for many months.

I got Tools of Destruction day one, and then Quest for Booty and a Crack in Time as well. I was so happy when the HD collection was announced and I was able to replay those classics on the PS3. I platinumed them all, along with Into the Nexus. I couldn't quite crack a Crack in Time because my blaster don't run so hot!

Can't wait to play Ratchet and Clank on the PS4 and see the movie and I hope Insomniac has more in store for us!

I only got into this game a few years ago when my brother gave me the HD collection. I immediately enjoyed the first one but found the controls a little dated, but when I started the first one I found it amazingly fun and kept playing the series until I finished it with Nexus.

Is Gladiator/Deadlocked worth playing if I really just enjoy Ratchet combat? I've always enjoyed the arenas in these games and I like it when the combat gets creative with enemy configurations.

In that case, I'd say go for it! Gladiator is a weird one because it was essentially Insomniac's first attempt to experiment with the winning Ratchet and Clank formula (No Clank, less platforming, a squad system is introduced)...but the game is essentially the Ratchet and Clank gladiator arenas turned into an entire game, with a nice sense of progression as you strive to become the best "gladiator" in the universe, doing all these different courses across the galaxy as you earn money.

Essentially based on what you described, I'd say you'd probably really enjoy it. It's not the best in the series (personally, I missed all the platforming and exploration elements too much) but if you enjoy the combat...I'd say give the game a whirl.

This series was my favorite during PS2 days, the reason I bought PS3 and one of the reason I will get PS4 this year...

And because I have to, A Crack in Time is my favourite.

Can someone tell me why the PS2 port of Size Matters received much lower review scores than the PSP version? I've yet to play that game and I'd need to play it on PS2, so just wondering if I should give it a shot.

I've been with the series since the first game. I love them all, more or less, but A Crack in Time is an absolute masterpiece.

I might have this backwards but I think that version of the game might have a super serious glitch where after a couple of playthroughs you can no longer get experience/bolts.

Beautiful OT!

The PS2 trilogy is by far my favourite ratchet and clank experience, but I found a few of the ps3 ones enjoyable and fun too.

Ratchet and Clank PS4 has me the most excited for a ratchet game in a long time, it looks unreal! I just hope that it still feels smooth even at 30fps, but I'm happy to see hoverboard races returning and looking better than ever!

I played the HD Collection a few years ago, really loved all 3 games

I ordered A Crack In Time a few days ago actually, really looking forward to playing it

It's a shame there are so few games in the Ratchet/Jak/Sly mould these days

Nice! I played the first game earlier this year and need to get around to the 2nd, 3rd, and then the two good ps3 ones. Ideally all before the new game but not likely. Can't wait for the movie

Just like the other psp>ps2 ports, it played much better on the former. It felt way more smoother. It's not a fps thing, I think it has more to do with motion blur. There was a gaf thread that explained this phenomenon.

Other than that it's the same game.

Thanks for the responses.

So in short, I'm a pretty big Ratchet fan, but I've yet to play these three games:

-Size Matters
-Secret Agent Clank
-Full Frontal Assault

Should I buy those? Keep in mind I would need to get the PS2 ports.

Size matters was alright on the PSP. Frontal assault is ok, it's different. have not played secret agent clank.

I have many thoughts about the destructible environments in this series:

1. There should be more destructible environments in this series

There's something about the exact mix of genres that R&C has that just appeals to me. I haven't played a crack in time yet though, so I really need to get that sometime. My favourite is going commando though.

I'd say no to FFA, but I'm a pretty big fan of the other two. Will say that I did play SM and SAC on PSP, so I can't vouch for the quality of the PS2 ports.

IcyFlamez.

Replace that Veldin picture in the Ratchet and Clank 1 section by the actual finalized version of my drawing:

Or by my best drawing regarding Ratchet and Clank:

Hey inferno, that was yours? I thought it was official concept art or something. I tried to avoid using fanart, I guess I failed. I'll edit it with the finalized Veldin pic.... Thanks for not being mad lol.

Agreed. I'd also like to see gadgets more integrated into combat situations, like using the swingshot to pull armour off of enemies or other much cooler ideas that the designers could come up with.

One day when I was little my parents and I went to Kohl's (yeah the fucking clothing store) and my dad said I could get two games but only open 1. I chose RC1 and Spyro. By some stroke of luck I picked this game and it was fucking amazing. Took me years to beat but for me nothing comes close to the first one. I didn't even know video games could be that fun.

If you're a pretty big fan, then yeah. They're not gonna cost you a lot, and none of them are even close to being bad games. Secret Agent Clank is the worst of those due to shitty stealth, and just being a long version of the relatively lacklustre Clank segments from the PS2 games.

Size Matters is pretty good, it's definitely cut down but it's one of the PSPs killer apps imo and I can't see why it wouldn't hit home on PS2 either.

Full Frontal Assault, that's Q Force right? Game is fine, bit different but nowhere near bad.

I agree on all three.

Forgot to say, finally! Thanks Icy! :D

Ive played Future and Crack in Time + their expansions. I literally just bought the Ratchet and Clank collection for the Vita last night for a long flight to Japan I have coming up in a few weeks.

Really excited for the PS4 remake.

Just felt the need to throw some love to the underloved Tools of Destruction, my favorite Ratchet game.

Great thread.
