Ratchet and Clank Community Thread: Rip Ya a New One

Played the OG trilogy on PS2 but i only had a 360 so i missed out on the rest. Really looks like i missed out on crack in time, based on what you guys are saying. Going to drag the fiance to the movie and get the new PS4 game.

Not just Crack in Time but Tools for Destruction as well. That game is great and Imo has better pacing than CIT. they're both amazing though

One of my favourite franchises, but I can understand where people are coming from when they say it's getting old/repetitive. Each game has the same fundamental layout, characters, & weapons in every game. You're always saving the world with dual blasters, bomb-tossers, shotguns, Mr Zurkon, shield launchers/enemy distractions, and sometimes melee weapons.

Having said that, I will still buy & platinum every single R&C that releases.
God I love that series.

just finished crank in time and loved it to death. and kudos for the greatest weapon of all time, MR ZURKON!

"mr. zurkon is coming to kill youuu"

can't wait for the new game. graphics are just unbelieveable.

Pretty sure I got stuck on the hoverboard race and just gave up.
Really want to try it again though, really liked the gameplay.

Yeah, I remember the hoverboard race being a lot harder than the rest of the game too. That wasn't a huge deal when I was younger, had more free time and fewer games to play, but it was a bigger detraction more recently when the HD remakes came around.

It might not actually be harder, just different enough to confusing to people like me. I sucked at the racing games in Jak II and 3 also.

I never found the hoverboard races to be hard. Even not much back then. It was a bit hard at first just because I wasn't used to it since it's so different from the core gameplay, but it was easy enough to get used to it after playing it a few times.

Now GC's hoverbike races... Had way more issues with that.

Interesting, I'm the complete opposite. The Hoverboard races either go really well or really badly for me. I managed to do them both in a single try most recently, but before then it could take numerous tries to get them right. The Hoverbikes on the other hand never bothered me (apart from becoming too repetitive when you go for all the bolts) and I rarely fail them. Honestly though, the races are some of my least favourite parts of those games and I'm happy that they were left behind.

I always disliked races and ship sections when I was forced to do them, but I like going back to do them for side purposes. Hoverboard races were always the most enjoyable for me though and I'm excited to play them in the new game.

I was glad they left behind racing too, but then was sad about the hoverboot races being cut from CiT.

Yeah, I appreciate breaking up the main Ratchet gameplay every now and then, but when you're getting in the groove of things only to be thrown into another race or clank section, it can get old quick. I've been replaying TOD this weekend and the ship sections in that game are cool because going through them first time is refreshing and not to mention has some great dialogue and set pieces to help you through it. I liked R&C2's ship missions for the most part (fuck those race platinum bolts though) but TOD's are a lot more memorable and enjoyable to just play through. However, getting the skill points and bolts on those levels are sooo tedious. I was doing a 'don't get hit' skill point in one of these earlier today and I had to resort to a glitch to get it because I've got no patience for that stuff lol.

Actually, I've been wanting to talk about my current TOD playthorough because it's changed my opinion on the game quite a bit, but I've only just started my challenge mode run, and that's half the game lol so I'll hold off for now.

Also I'd never heard of the hoverboot race in CiT before, or at least I don't remember it since I'm sure I explored the whole museum in CiT. I think there was a cut bomberman mini game in R&C3 right? I remember something like that in the Insomniac Museum in that game. That would have been sweet.

I don't remember the bomberman thing you're talking about, but I do remember some kind of floor panel puzzle or something.

I think the museum let you actually ride on the hoverboot track actually.

I was stuck on that for so long. That planet has the hover board race / water escape which are probably the two most frustrating parts of the entire game for me.

It didn't work in the pal ps2 version. You had to type a password in the vg9000 just like you do to play Pirate vs Ninja.

It works in the Vita euro version though. Probably ps3 too

Oh , you said in R&C3? Yeah I don't remember that Insomniac museum well at all. The floor panel puzzle thing i'm talking about is from CiT's museum.

Alright, Going Commando 100% completed. This time only took 3 playthroughs to do so, getting some of those weapons fully upgraded can be such a slog. Still some fun stuff in Going Commando's arsenal, the Bouncer in particular is so fucking devastating.

Welp, that's 2 games down, 6 more to go.

Wait, there was an Insomniac Museum in A Crack in Time?

How the hell did I never know of this?

Yeah, here's a video of it: https://youtu.be/Fk3_AhUmkGw?t=10m28s. I apparently missed a bunch of stuff because I don't remember the tank or Turboslider minigames at all. I do remember the additional Qwark vidcomics though, they were damn hard lol.

You have to 100% the game aka get all zoni + beat the secret boss. Then you can access it from the map.

As I said it wasn't in the PAL PS2 version, I knew about it for years but I could try it only a couple of months ago when I played the Vita version. Though you can't play multiplayer of course, so it's useless, I should try on PS3.

BTW, your posts reminded me that I didn't explore the ACIT museum back then, despite having unlocked it. I've seen a bit of it and some removals made my heart cry a bit. That gravity gadget, the procedurally generated death courses(and the sharing aspect)...man it's incredible that ACIT was so filled with new great ideas and still had so much content that's never seen the light of the day. Hopefully we'll see some of those features in the future installments(assuming any of those have been introduced already in ITN or will be in R&C 16)

Also, Insomniac does really need to stop relying so much on the focus testing, it took me just one try to solve that puzzle section with the electrified panels and the chronobomb, which was removed cause the testers found that too hard.

R&C1: Ugh so I just got to another hoverboard race now on Gadgetron against the robots.. I hope its easier than the first one..

Man the hoverboard races are fun.

I wanted to start my replay of Crack in Time today but apparently my PS4 controller isn't compatible with it. This is despite the PS4 controller being completely fine with Tools of Destruction, the HD trilogy and Quest for Booty. I tried looking for solutions and some sites (like IGN) say that it is compatible which leads me to believe that my controller might be the problem (It works fine with the PS3 menu though so I'm not convinced.) Anyone know if there is a way to get the PS4 controller to work? I saw someone online mention that you need to use the PS3 controller for the start menu but everything after that can be done with the PS4 controller (which wasn't the case when I tried.) My PS3 controller is very old and the analogs are fucked so I can't play with that unfortunately.

Edit: Okay after some shenanigans involving reassigning the PS4 controller to the PS3 controller's current position, it started to work fine. Thank goodness, I didn't want to miss out on replaying one of my favourite games (I really don't like the PS3 controller any more lol)

I didn't know the PS4 controller worked with these games. I haven't got a PS4 yet, but I plan to in the next month or so. I've used the DS4 and like it much better than the DS3, I'll have to play through the original with the DS4 before the new one comes out.

Yeah the DS4 has really spoiled me to the point where I can't really use the DS3 any more.

I don't have a PS4, but honestly the PS4 controller always feels incredibly weird to me when I use it. I'm sure it's better once you get used to it, but they're probably so different that you can't really ever be used to both at the same time.

Seeing the weapon Ratchet has in that pic (the link seems to be broken btw) got me thinking about the weapon selection this time round. Do we have a list of all known weapons yet? I remember being slightly disappointed that all the weapons shown at the reveal were old with the exception of the pixelator. Heck, I think all the old weapons were from the future games instead of the original, right?

the weapon in the image is the Pyro Blaster

tbf Flame throws are quite stranded and the but i get what you saying but i dont think we have seen all the weapons yet

The first one because he doesn't look as off. That's actually the only promotional image I like from the whole R&C reimagining stuff. (Including the PS4 game. His pose on the box art is kinda bleh). I didn't even know that was being sold.

To answer your other question, I don't really know of other good R&C merchandise available to buy. I really wanted a Ratchet-Sackboy keychain, but I couldn't find anywhere that was selling it. Hopefully they give out another one as a pre-order bonus for the PS4 game like they did with Into the Nexus and Full Frontal Assault.

Do we usually know of all the weapons in the game before it comes out?

Most of the weapons we've seen are from the future games. The one that I can think of off the top of my head that's from the original is the Glove of Doom.

Thanks for the response, I do think the first would look better on a wall too...

Btw, I did see your ratchet key chain on ebay but I'm not sure you want to spend that much on a keychain: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-SEALED-...573191?hash=item2ee73606c7:g:mOkAAOSwo6lWG9QP

Will the flamethrower aiming always be locked to the camera? :(

Nah that's the only weapon we know of (according to a dev) that isn't locked to the camera, if you're not strafing that is. This game is taking a lot off of ItN, so probably pretty much all the other weapons will be locked to the camera.

I just hope they have a more robust selection of camera options than that game did.

So as of right now, I have completed absolutely everything in Up Your Arsenal, wrapping up the original PS2 trilogy. God damn is UYA still a good ass game. The levels, the weapons, the carnage. Kind of miss some of the extra side games from Going Commando like the hover bike races and ship combat, but the arsenal you have more than makes up for it. Definitely a delight to revisit.

One thing I want to bring up now that I've replayed all 3 games is each game's version of the RYNO, considering it serving as a series staple. I remember a discussion several pages back about the RY3NO being underwhelming, and after all 3 games I'd rank them as RYNO II > RY3NO > OG RYNO. The one in Going Commando is ideal just because you have more control over how many rockets you fire, based on how long you hold the button. And if you hold it down all the time and dump those rockets, the explosion (and rumble) is super satisfying. The 1st and RY3NO are rather similar at the start with them firing a salvo of rockets with each shot, but the upgrades to the RY3NO make it diverge quite a lot. The one thing I do like about it is that fully upgraded it takes the concept of the Zodiac from Going Commando and makes it somewhat more viable, with it being essentially a screen clearing bomb and the cost of ammo isn't stupidly high. Plus it gets rid of the downside of the auto targetting including crates and not just enemies. So it has its merits.

Game's still sitting at the top of my ranking in the series, so that's all good. Honestly curious about how my perspective on Deadlocked will change since that's next on my playthrough list, and I always get the feeling it's treated the same way as something like Jak X in that fans are less fond of it due to it being a spinoff and not a proper mainline game, regardless of how good it is on its own merits.

I have a soft spot for Deadlocked, especially due to its two-player local co-op.

The PS3 version is... astonishingly bad. Maybe it's just me? Constant visual and sound glitches.
