Ratchet and Clank movie hitting in 2015

Cool. I'll be at the theatres on day 1. Now give Sly Coope his own animated TV series and give Jak another game and all my dreams will have come true.

Rainmaker isn't Pixar but they used to be really good. Hopefully their talent is relatively intact after all these years. If you guys aren't familiar with Rainmaker they are a company that renamed themselves after making quality shows like the following:

Hopefully the talent is still there, they haven't made anything worthwhile in 15 years...I have a feeling the talent that made these shows special left long time ago.

Yeah, it was cute in a "Aww this makes me smile" sort of way, but wouldn't make me want to sit through an hour+ of non-interactive jokes

I suppose when he Halo or Hitman or Resident Evil came to theaters you really wanted to have control no? Why even make any movie adaptations of games if we get mad for not being able to interact with our favorites. This series lends itself well to something like this so I'm really not worried and in the end, I want more from that universe. That includes more games of course.

I mean what an odd thing to say. The reveal here is not something that will even be in the movie so how can one guess what the plot will be about when this is just trying to convey the humor and show us what it may look like.

When we see the first real trailer I'm sure we will have a semblance of some story to it but right now, it's hard to even criticize.

Out of nowhere!

IMO R&C always seemed made for a cartoon series more then a movie but whatever. I am interested in seeing how successful this will be.

Given Insomniac's thing for dumb sub titles yeah I think "Ratchet and Clank: The game of the movie of the game" is probably gonna happen.

I hope by "dumb" you really mean "awesome!!!!".

Trailer looks good, and its being written by Insomniac, which is great.

I'm curious to know the story though - this is there first movie so will they be doing back story or just jumping right in and assuming the audience knows the characters?

I'm also hoping that this news means that Ratchet is here to stay, and we will get more games in the series (Though, hopefully more like Going Commando and less like the two recent entries. Actually, three - wasn't fond of ACiT either, despite how much GAF loves it).

You are insane, good sir.

Inb4 "opinions, how do they work?"

I want another game along with this too!!1 Ratchet and Clank on the PS4 omgggg them particle effects!!! and thousands of enemies on screen Hnnnnng.

Inb4 "opinions, how do they work?"

Yeah I get that a lot. I won't go into my list of reasons (Aside from saying that the second Lombax guy was a terrible, terrible character), but I will say that the list is fairly long. I may replay it and give it a second chance. I love Ratchet and was pretty upset that i didn't enjoy ACiT as much as I hoped I would.

"Screenwriter and Senior Writer for Insomniac Games, TJ Fixman, will handle the script. The movie will be directed by Jericca Cleland and produced by Blockade’s CEO Brad Foxhoven and VP of Development David Wohl, with Rainmaker President Michael Hefferon serving as Executive Producer and Rainmaker’s Kim Dent Wilder and Kylie Ellis serving as Supervising Producer and Producer, respectively."

IGN Interview. Very good and to the point:

IGN: How did this project come about?

Brad Foxhoven: The video game industry has some pretty spectacular franchises, filled with compelling characters and engaging story lines. When we looked at Ratchet and Clank, we recognized a franchise that was already very cinematic and with a distinct voice that set it apart from other game franchises. Most of the current crop of animated films are based on new concepts that require the marketing teams to invest a significant amount just to make the audience aware of the basic aspects of the film: who the characters are, what makes this world unique, etc.. With Ratchet and Clank, we already had a massive fan base, and partners in SCEA and Insomniac that would help promote the film.

IGN: What about Ratchet and Clank makes it perfect as an animated theatrical release?

Michael Hefferon: You have an incredible world of characters, locations and situations, that together set the stage for our action adventure comedy that will appeal to family audience. This is already evident in the success of Ratchet and Clank as a game franchise. The strong appeal of the main characters, make them identifiable and likeable that appeal to adults and kids a alike. Although the storyline for Ratchet and Clank is original to the movie, the game franchise provides the film an immediate market awareness – this inherent awareness will be a strong driver for the films success.

IGN: How involved is SCEA and Insomniac with this film?

Foxhoven: They are very involved, which is a big plus for us. We have tremendous respect for what they have accomplished with this game, and their guidance on how to transition this to a feature film. For example, TJ Fixman, who writes for the game, is also our screenwriter. TJ, and other members of the Insomniac team, also help to guide the film's creative vision, consult on animation and design, and even help on our marketing efforts. In many ways, this is more of a collaboration with them than us just running off to make a film.

IGN: Rumor has it that this project is coming in at a much smaller budget than other theatrical releases? How did you do it?

Hefferon: Rainmaker has tremendous experience in producing long form content and has built a feature film pipeline that allows the studio to leverage our technology and strong production methodology to give our artist the ability to achieve high quality results at a much lower cost. A strong driver for us on the Ratchet and Clank film, is the wide range of game assets available to us to base our designs in creating the world. The look of picture has already been established, allowing us to take the art direction for the game and adapt it for a cinematic format.

IGN: Does this use the in-game models or was it built from scratch?

Hefferon: Although the in-game models provide us with reference, all the assets, rigs, models and elements necessary to make the film will be entirely created from scratch. We will use the in-game models for the pre-visualization (Previz) phase, allowing us to block out the storyboard scenes with CGI characters. This allows us to shorten the typical development/preproduction phase and move quicker into production.

IGN: Do you have any ideas for who other voice talent – any "celebrity" talent?

Hefferon: The first thing we're doing right, is working with the talented voice talent from the game for our three main characters to ensure the film is true to the game characters. With our script locked and film now officially announced, we are in discussion with potential celebrity talent – many of whom are big fans of the game.

IGN: What part of the Ratchet and Clank lore will the movie cover? Will any of the story from the games make it into the film?

Foxhoven: The film really covers their "origin" story so to speak. TJ did a great job of inserting elements that would appeal to both existing fans while attracting a new audience that may not be familiar with the game franchise.

IGN: Will the film tie in with a next gen game release?

Foxhoven: The film is a stand alone story, but we will be looking at various ways to coordinate marketing efforts with both Sony Playstation and Insomniac.

IGN: What are some of the planets they might visit in their journeys?

Foxhoven: We want to keep the storyline under wraps for the moment, but fans should expect some familiar locations.

IGN: Which weapons from Ratchet’s famous and expansive arsenal will make it into the movie?

Foxhoven: One of the many cool aspects of this franchise, in addition to the great characters, is the endless supply of crazy weapons and gadgets that these characters use--and rest assured this film is loaded with them.

huh?Not Sony Pictures Animation,Sony treat R&C as a 3rd class IP that don't even deserve to be made by Sony Pictures Animation.

Great work there,Kaz.

As stated before, this is SCEA/Insomniac's decision. Budget + delivery was important. Sony Pictures ≠ Sony Computer Entertainment.

P.S. Can the OP be updated with teaser and interview? Looks like OP fell asleep or something... :/

RYNO and Zurkon will be there for sure since theyre so memorable. Groovitron was in the teaser. Wonder if theyll go all the way back to the first game and use stuff like the Morphoray, Walloper, Suck Cannon, Decoy Glove or Agents of Doom.

good lord people. the fact that Sony Pictures isn't doing it has nothing to do with the perceived quality or importance of the film. if you guys knew half the stuff that went down in Hollywood trying to get movies made, you'd realize quality plays very little into things at the early stages.

this is a full length movie, with a script we approve of, a ton of our assets being used as reference, and us acting as consultants. We're very hopeful it can live up to expectations

Well, I'm absolutely pumped.

Congratulations and I can't wait to see more!

Looks, uh, rather unambitious, style-wise. Higher poly-counts aside, it looks pretty much no different than a bog-standard in-game cutscene. And using the much more rigid and boring-looking older designs, no less.

Would have much preferred for them to work off the more cartoony designs from All 4 One and FFA, using the budget a full-fledged movie allows to really go nuts with the moment-to-moment squash & stretch animation those designs are infinitely better tailored for.

GOW movie rights belong to Universal Studios

So after selling the rights for a GOW movie to a rival studio, they are doing the same thing with another franchise? dat One Sony Vision

qKxLKDG.jpg

Came to say this. Many more examples though like buy an Xperia tablet and download couple of movies from Google play instead of SEN store. The fact that GOW is not a Columbia movie and Ratchet is not an SPA movie is ridiculous and shows the amount of disconnect within Sony.

Also this seems more true (or truer? Which one is grammatically correct? Sorry about this random OT question) now than ever:

Blockade will do:

  • Heavenly Sword movie
  • Sly Movie
  • Jak and Daxter movie

Still haven't played any of these games, except demos. Do the old one still stand up? How's the HD collection on PS3?

I'm just wondering you know ... Insomniac have said that it's a low budget movie ... What if Sony release a channel on Gaikai that caters for the smaller budget movies? A sort of Indie scene for films. An Indie film channel would be pretty huge if Sony promote the fact that they can get their content to most devices and so provide a huge audience

Animation looks like they really nailed the Ratchet and Clank look....I have no doubt at the very least it will be faithful to the series, especially with the Insomniac oversight

Looks like it'll be fun. I'll definitely check it out. Still, I hope they'll do an actual R&C game for PS4.

Put up a teaser for a Sly Cooper movie in the credits and this will be glorious.
Great, now you've made me think of them doing something akin to Avengers.

Once Sly and Jak get films, they can release "Cooper's Eleven," crossover Avengers-style film

If a RYNO isnt used in this movie, I hold you personally responsible

Since ACiT used the 1812 Overture, I'm hoping they'll use something like O Fortuna with some slow-motion thrown in.

it's still belong to Sony and even if their top animation studio is not available least give it to some decent studio (because it's still your IP) but instead they went to an unknown studio with a really shitty track record.

this is like if Disney decide to let VĂdeo Brinquedo make Star Wars CG movies.

Guys, I am not entirely sure how I feel about this. On one hand I am glad to see a Ratchet & Clank movie but on the other hand they gave it to s small studio rather than a large one, which could mean that they didn't want to spend too much on it.

They made made "Escape from planet Earth" which quite honestly I didn't see but the reception of it wasn't too hot from what I've collected on the net. But hey, It's still way too early at this point, we'll probably wait until 2014 for a new trailer.

I this confirms Ratchet and Clank will be a franchise Insomniac will not abandon next gen. Cannot wait for the movie and eventual games.

This movie new accompanies by this realization makes me a very happy camper. R&C is easily one of my favorite series, and ACiT was just incredible. I'm glad to see we're primed for another major entry in the future. The humor and setting of the series lends it self well to a movie.

But... wow, a theatrical release. Hopefully this does well.

Uh, these are the designs from All4One and FFA. What are you even talking about?
A4O & FFA really embellished the stretchy cartooniness and made character's silhouettes wayyyy more distinct and interesting. They use Ratchet's costume from those games here, but the general body structures definitely hew a lot closer to the games beforehand, where the models have a certain chunkiness and feel like they're being posed more than they feel like they're being animated.
