Ratchet & Clank Into the Nexus - Review Thread

Doesn't sound good but I'll judge it when I play it.

The gaming media's ambivalence to Ratchet & Clank is fucking sad. It used to be an event.

Hopefully this is just EDGE being EDGE, rather than being a meh game.

Is it just me, or has game reviews lately been lower than anticipated?

I don't know if it was Sony or Insomniac that ruined this franchise, but the state of the series is depressing as hell.

Nothing is good forever. You have to just enjoy it while it is and accept it and move on when that's over. This past generation really drove this home to me. Hell, you have a Mega Man avatar, you know this.

Will rent and play. I really hope after this Insomniac take a good three years to make a new mind-blowing PS4 R&C. Enough with these small portioned experiments.

That's what happens when you turn a franchise into a low selling yearly franchise of mediocrity. People stop caring.
How is ratchet a yearly series? Are we counting the spinoffs? Seems like cheating :)

Edit: OMG it is yearly! But it has always been!

I hope you know that the Ratchet series has always been yearly, while selling very well

Ratchet and Clank - 2002
Going Commando - 2003
Up Your Arsenal - 2004
Deadlocked - 2005

Tools of Destruction - 2007
Quest for Booty - 2008
A Crack in Time - 2009

Dat Xbone moneyhat.
I kid,
I hope.

Still going to get it and still most likely going to enjoy the shit out of it.

I don't get most of these posts. Ratchet & Clank had 5 new games this generation, right?

1) Tools of Destructions is amazing.
2) Quest For Booty is forgettable (kinda of a smaller adventure linking the 'st and 2nd game).
3) Crack in time is, possibly, the best R&C game ever.
4) All for One is a party game. Not tradiational R&C. Fun game but full of bugs and glitches (insomniac is to blame for this).
5) Full Frontal Assault (Q Force in Europe) is a Base/Tower defense game. Like Dungeon Defenders. Not traditional R&C.

Into the Nexus (trditional R&C) is just out, we know nothing about it yet, and some people act like R&C have been bad for a while... what the hell?
Can anyone explain this to me please?

The original PS2 games released yearly:

2002: R&C
2003: Going Commando
2004: Up Your Arsenal
2005: Deadlocked

Something has changed at Insomniac. I'm not sure they're capable of making great Ratchet games anymore, the last few entries have been phoned in.

Well, i'm satisfied with those scores. Edge's main complaint is that the game is too safe, but after A4O and FFA, i'm pleased with that. Humour is also super subjective, so i'll reserve judgement until I play the game :)

Maybe... But the last few entreies (I'll assume you're talking about A4O and FFA) were not adventure games, aka traditional ratchet.

If we are going to judge on the last traditional ratchet, it was A Crack in Time, possibly the best ever R&C game.

Last few? Last two have been phoned in, ACiT is the best damn R&C ever released.

Yea, Insomniac has been off their game for a while. I'd argue that everything they did other than R&C has been subpar at best.

But I cannot fault them, the R&C series is one of my favorite franchises in gaming, and if a new one comes out, I'll get it. And yes, ACiT is the best game in the series.

I don't know what happened at Insomniac but they definitely lost something... Maybe going multi-plat wasn't good for them after all. I dunno.

to clarify my statement before i get insulted: Maybe before they went multi, Sony helped them somehow to make their games more appealing.

I hope SONY ended their contract (or whatever they had) with them.
They were simply horrible this gen.
SCEA has "Ready at Dawn" now.
MS can keep Insomniac Games/Sunset Overdrive.

Sad how the only real advertising I've seen for this thing is a small poster in GameStop. Even for $30 people may balk. This was an awful time to release the game. Its complete PS+ fodder now...and I think savvy gamers know it.

I love Ratchet and Clank.

What I love about the series:

The weapons.
The humor.
The exploration.
The planets.
The upgrade/level up system.
The platforming.
Ratchet.
Clank.

Does this game have all of that stuff? If the answer is yes, then I think I'll be fine. People complain that R&C was too formulaic, so they change it up with Quest for Booty, All 4 One, and Full Frontal Assault, and people complain that they miss the old "traditional" R&C, so they bring back the classic gameplay, and people complain that it's too safe. I can't eyeroll hard enough.

As for the reviews? Meh. I haven't read them. Reviews have been worthless to me for over 15 years now whether they be good or bad. I just buy the shit I want, and make up my own mind about what I like or don't like.

The first 3 Spyro games?

Anyways, I have been thinking for a while that Sony should hire other studio to work on R&C games. For example Sanzaru did an amazing work with Sly Cooper.

I think what has changed at Insomniac is that they are lacking focus... They're just working on too many things at once. Consider their output for this gen:

Resistance: Fall of Man
Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest For Booty
Resistance 2
Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack In Time
Resistance 3
Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One
Ratchet and Clank: Full Frontal Assult
Outernauts
Fuse
Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus

That is a shit ton of projects over a seven year period for a 200-250 person studio. The quality of those projects has varied quite a bit. I blame the management. They have two studios I believe. Maybe if they each just worked on a single game at a time the quality would be much better.

I'll still buy it - can't go wrong for £20. Suppose I might enjoy it anyway. Besides, I own every other Ratchet and Clank game, may as well grab this one.

I'll go in with low expectations, I guess.

Ratchet and Clank needs another full-fledged entry in the series, not this.

It would be the perfect type of title to show off the PS4 hardware. The first PS3 game was the first time I was wowed by next-gen.

I know that Insomniac opened up a second studio a while ago, and I has cranked out All For One and the other "crappy" R&C games, this be a case of the main studio focusing on Sunset and the B studio working on this, and not being up to snuff. I have the game coming from Gamefly, but it gets here a day before PS4, so I'm actually hoping its not too long XD.

But IMO, while I loved the R&C franchise, Insomniac should let it die permanently if they are going to just release "meh" to bad games annually..

i think this is more a game for fans who wanted a classic one after the co-op and tower defense excursions. i expect franchise fatigue from the media, there's been a lot of ratchet's and since going commando they're all very similar.

I guess I should say post R&C, because yes, the first three Spyro games were amazing.

Maybe Insomniac are just better when it comes to platformers.

Will buy and play the shit out of this.

Just like I did with ToL.

And ACiT.

Amen to this.
I love Ratchet and Clank. I'll probably fire up ACIT while reading some new impressions of this title.

Tools of Destruction was so rad, and early in the PS3 life cycle. So wish they kicked off next gen with a Ratchet title on the new console!
