Honestly are there any adult oriented action anime movies that can become the new example of anime for non-anime fans?

The best I can think of is the Animatrix, but that isn't a single cohesive narrative. Ghost in the Shell and its sequel are okay, but they lean more toward the drama side with less emphasis on action.

Where are they? Ninja Scroll types especially have been lacking. By NS-types I mean a martial arts action movie that actually animates the fights. None of that DBZ/Naruto crap that shows super fast fights of the same three frames repeated.

Your tastes in anime almost completely mimics my own.

There's not much out there that isn't a series, like Naruto.

I would second the Spriggan, and Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal recommendations. I tried the other Kenshin series because of Samurai X, and was disappointed. Spriggan has some great action and violence, but gets a little... preachy towards the end.

The first episode of Elfen Lied is AWESOME. PLEASE, try that. It will definitely satisfy your violence cravings for a while. After that, well, its more miss than hit.

I can't really think of too much else.

again, to the people that didn't like the kenshin tv series (but did like the ova), try jumping right to episode 30. If you don't like ep30, then you can stop right there. Otherwise, continue, but stop after episode... I think its 62.

Steamboy would have been better if it hadn't been so LONG. But, yeah, the stuff during the credits would have made an awesome movie.

If its completely up to me, I have people watch the short arc in the beginning that introduces... whats his name... Aoshi? Then I have them watch the whole shishio thing from beginning to end (introduction of Saito->end of shishio arc) and then I have them watch the ova.

The rest, in my opinion, can just be completely thrown away.

But if they've already given up on the series, its easier to just start someone with kenshin vs saito (30) and let them make up their own mind from there.

Another person who dislikes everything past the Kyoto Arc. Really, so far I don't see anything that bad with it except the fact that it isn't the Kyoto Arc. It reminds me of the episodes that began the series and I don't hear many people complaining about them (you're the first).

I don't know what the pinnacle is, but Macross Plus is better than Akira. Tons of stuff is IMO.l

Oh, I don't think I watched that. I'll check it out though.
Honestly, I can see there being many animes better than Akira but really, the manga is a whole different beast.
If you can ever get a hold of them, make sure to take the time and read them.

Jeez, just discard the whole Kenshin TV series but the Norio Matsumoto Kenshin versus Saito episode and be done with it. The OVA is incredibly better... at least the first one.

Sword for Truth seemed about as good as Ninja Scroll when I watched it ages back.

Already have the first GitS movie in there, so I can't reccommend another nonsensical but flashy movie to compete with Akira. Appleseed I guess.

He was going to be the director, back when they first tried to make the movie. Instead it's some US special effects guy that was also involved with the Animatrix.

Read or Die is Awesome!!! one of my favorites. I think any of the Hellsing stuff is good and also Vampire hunter d bloodlust.

I read a review of this over at Anime News Network and according to them, this is another example of an animated movie that looks awesome, but has a terrible story and uninteresting characters. So...you may want to proceed with caution on this one.

I'll probably still watch it anyway for the slick animation...

why does it have to have utlra violence? Read or Die is awsome! It includes everything you could want in anime except ultra violence; you should still give it a try though. ^^

For the purposes of this thread it needs the violence. But for a good, non-Ghibli, movie that I'd never heard of until this point, I'm very excited to see it.

...and ROD is good, but it isn't a good suggestion to fill the role of a Ninja Scroll or Bloodlust.
