Oh Jesus I would kill for a plan like that.

I am paying, essentially, 60 dollars a month for 500 txt, unlimited Verizon to Verizon txt, and 1500 Minutes.

That's it.

Fuck Verizon and the horse it rode in on.

Yeah. That is pretty bad considering the internet is a major feature of modern smartphones.

I was just thinking the same thing. Talking about Wind Waker and being in High School. I was remembering staying home "sick" to play Final Fantasy 7, but then it hit me. I called in from WORK, not school. My school days were NES/SNES and Genesis.

Exactly.

Though for me it was more like my school days were 186s and an Amiga 500 while my friends were all playing NES/SNES/Master System/Megadrive etc.

Oh man, this kind of made me feel old actually, hahaha. I was thinking, "High school? Wasn't I in the middle of college when this came out? Oh, yeah..." I didn't even get a Gamecube until 2005 (it was $60, deal!)

Didn't get a PS2 until 2005 either. I hadn't been gaming much for a few years and then started up again. Good thing too, since FFXII would be out soon after. I remember importing it and having to do disc swap every time I wanted to play the game. That was fun times.

I also got a system for my 14th birthday (so just before I started high school.) It was a PS1! FFVII was out less than a month later (got it day one.)

In Scotland there is no such thing as middle-school, we go into highschool ages 11-12. I was late to the PS2 bandwagon aswell, I got the slims when they started going on massive sales.

Now forgive me father for I have sinned, but I've never really played any final fantasy game.

Just popped in Wind waker to see if it looked awesome on my tv using the Wii, and it does. Shame classic controllers can't be used for gamecube games.

It reminds me of the time I bought wind waker, first time I had ever "saved" money for something. I knew Wind waker was coming out and I must HAS IT. I had just started my first year of high school and I didn't even get an allowance, mainly because I was a wee dick. Anyway, I had just gotten a gamecube and SSBM for my bday and I had to scrounge, scrounge, scrounge, and scrounge.

I was given £1.50 for lunch money everyday at school. I never ate lunch for weeks. Picking up pennies and putting then in a jar. I walked to my local supermarket with a shit load of spare change to pay for this game. The lady refused to count my change (they can do that if you give more than two pounds in change) and I fucking flipped, I think she saw the error of her ways and gave up.

With the game in my hand, I charged home like a fucking BULL. Ran into the girl I had a crush on, ignored the fuck out of her and just ran. Got home and locked myself in my room for like a month.

Wind waker is such an awesome fucking game, even just looking at the disc makes me weak at the knees. When I say the title screen on my TV, I had to share this moment with you all. It's amazing how much life changes in 10 years.

Also whats with all the bottle balancing going on. o.O

I loved Wind Waker until the dungeons where you had to conduct a tune to switch over to another character about 200 times.

After the first time, there should have been a quick-switch option.

I'll be going to video game hell with you. I did play FFXI, but I'm not sure that gets me out of purgatory.

Actually, like you I started out as a PC gamer. This is why point and click adventures are STILL my favorite genre of all time. But being young I couldn't constantly ask my parents to upgrade their computer (I actually once managed to convince them to upgrade to Windows 95, which caused a melt down of the whole thing and we ended up having to get a new computer anyway...) Buying a console once every so often was much cheaper.

Better than not having played a Zelda or Mario like a certain friend I have. Yes, we give him shit for it. That's how nerdy we are.

Edit - I love when we're at the eve of next-gen, these rumors are more entertaining than the launch games probably will be.

Like every other thread on Gaming right now is

WiiU is 2x more powerful than 360!
XBox 3 is 5x more powerful than PS3
WiiU is 6x more powerful than 360 but XBox 3 is only 1-2x more powerful than WiiU

And people are discussing these things as if they're not totally laughable, made up estimations.

What the fuck does 2x - 5x more powerful even mean? How can anyone make a value judgment on that?

It's like touring a city and going

"Oh, this building is 5x - 7x times the last one!"
"What, do you mean in size or--"
"No, it's 5x to 7x the last one! Or maybe 2x - 8x."
"...what"

is that why your hair is permanently spiked up

Yes, yes it is. It is my burden to bare.

bro, this is GAF bro.

Well im a bit LTTP with this avatar thing, but im in lol

Welcome! It's not a bad place to be, this RP thread. ;)

People talking about games here always makes me feel old. The fact that there are people on GAF who have probably only ever owned Sony console hardware is scary stuff.

Welcome to BestGAF

Same. I wonder if these people ever played on an Atari or NES, and then I remember the median age for gaf and cry a little on the inside.

Yes, yes it is. It is my burden to bare.

Freudian slip? ;)

Every time he shows these folder shots I feel like I always see your pic, Plywood. I think you might be his 'special time' avatar.

It's obvious to me they're talking about the Power of Greyskull. Just wait until He-Man releases, he'll corner the market.

Bigger penises. Swords. I meant swords.

The WiiU is 2 times more powerful than the 360, which is 5 times more powerful than the Wii, which is 1.5 times more powerful than the Gamecube. The PS3 is 8 times more powerful than the Gamecube.
If the Nintendo 64, which is 1/10th as powerful as the WiiU, is 435, what is the PS3?

My parents were journalists so we needed to have "top of the line" PCs during the 80s so they could work remotely. It was so much easier to convince them that my brother and I needed an Amiga 500 because we showed them that it actually had productivity tools and things you could do other than gaming, whereas a console was totally out of the question.

It was good and bad to be honest. My first ever experience with coding was BASIC, and that wouldn't have happened if my folks had bought me consoles.

I've already pointed out the inanity of it all but was naturally ignored since everyone is too busy trying to work out if this means they've scored some points for their "team" or not.

The problem is that we keep dying off. Well, not literally, but like Alberto was saying before, fatigue sets in after watching a bunch of kids having the same arguments you remember seeing a decade ago but with a few names changed around. In that situation it's hard to keep on coming back.

You're not supposed to make me feel even older!

Well sadly, now is not the time to get on the FF train. God I hate SE. And I even liked FFXIII! But their business practices are just shady as hell...

My parents were journalists so we needed to have "top of the line" PCs during the 80s so they could work remotely. I guess I was lucky. My parents never really had a reason to have a computer, my dad had just always been a sci-fi geek and so that was the one bit of tech he jumped on early (he was late to CDs and HDTVs, but he was way ahead of the game with computers!) He used to play computer games too, which is how I ended up playing games like Myst and Riven.

It's funny, now whenever he has to use his computer where there is no internet he says, "What did we use computers for before internet again? I can't seem to remember..."

Is that the BBC series? I keep hearing it's good, but haven't gotten the chance to check it out.

It's sooo good.

Like... 7x as good as The Movies.

Which were 2x as bad as the Disney Mouse Movie.

...

Seriously though, Sherlock is FANTASTIC and if you're a fan of the Doyle works it's even better. VERY faithful to the source material while setting it in modern times without any contrivances...

First ever console was the SNES with mario all-stars on it.

I saw a NES once when I was younger at a mates house (he was like 4 years older than me). Thats the only time I've ever seen a NES in real-life.

... And soon to be relegated to a museum, no doubt. Well, I guess I am nearly 10 years your senior, boy. ;)

So very true, especially when their arguments seem so silly. Ex. The graphics aren't good enough for you to enjoy the game, you say? GRAPHICS? We played Space Invaders, dammit, and it was an incredible game fraught with emotion and meaning!
Well, that might be stretching it a bit...

Im good thanks. About to settle down for the night and watch Episode 1 from my new Sherlock blu-ray :D

Almost blind bought the first season on Play.com the other day
Tell me if its worth 10€ (bluray) when you're done with it :P

Also, welcome

I saw some of it and liked it. But I was trying to watch it on the BBC site and it kept messing up so I never got to see the third episode. Is it on Netflix? I might try seeing it there.

Right now I'm watching through Doctor Who...

Dude, my game face when playing pong said it all. So much emotion. Mostly anger.

What would I do without you? No. No.

You complete me.

I was 3 when my parents brought home the NES.

I specifically remember my dad trying to hook it in to the TV and failing. And then he brought out the tools which meant something was about to break.

Our first games were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Metal Gear. I remember I had to call my mom in to the room every time there was text on the screen because I couldn't read it.

I nearly beat one of the hardest games I ever played when I was four. If I tried to do it today, I'd fail miserably.

You played pong? Thought you were early-mid '20s, .la1n. Wait, you did say before that you have an inability to age... Are you secretly
50
?!

And to think I went off to college with a black and white TV so I could play Space Invaders, Asteroids* and Missile Command whenever I wanted.

*Still the greatest game ever.

It's funny, now whenever he has to use his computer where there is no internet he says, "What did we use computers for before internet again? I can't seem to remember..."

I do this all the time. The other day I curled up into a ball and started weeping while remembering what it was like to even get simple things done like installing a driver for your network card before the internet. Hell, even once dial-up came about you still needed to go over to a mates place, wait 2 days for it to download then archive it into 1.44mb chunks and copy those to 10 floppy disks -- new ones of course, or you might get a corrupt disk in the middle that screwed you.

It's odd, I'm a total graphics horse in general but it's more like if I have the option I'd rather have my games looking their finest. Considering that I used to play D&D I'd actually argue that the best games don't need graphics at all!

Early-mid 20s, ha I wish. I do have the inability to age which is what probably messed up your guesstimate. Take your age and subtract 2.

Same here. I'd never give up my 1080p/60FPS PC wonderland, but I'll still happily play "ugly" games and not care about the visuals after an hour.

Yes BBC version. I think its coming to the U.S in a few months time, if you dont get the chance to see it any other way

Its certainly worth it. Each episode is 90 minutes long, so your definitely getting your monies worth. Its all written brilliantly culminating in the final episode of series 2..which may just have been my favourite bit of television in a looooooong time.

And, thank you :)

My first system was one of those old NES rip-offs with 20 "games" in one cartridge.
My first REAL system though, was this

Anyone else had one of these? lol
