I'm just ripping off ugly's thread because I really like the idea, and I think it's a good fit for films.

Very simple, someone lists five of their favorite films, the next person recommends a film to that person based on the five, preferably while providing some sort of logic for their choice. Try to avoid things the person will have likely seen, for example, if they post five Tarantino films, don't suggest Jackie Brown just because it didn't make their five.

Here are five of mine:
Blue Is The Warmest Color
The Double Life of Véronique
Hunger
Synecdoche, New York
Tree of Life

Paris, Texas. A moving story focused on human relationships, with gorgeous cinematography. I would say on some aspects it's similar to blue is the warmest color, the double life of veronique or even tree of life.
And if you've already seen it, Night On Earth.

My top 5:
-The Godfather
-Seppuku
-2001 a space odyssey
-Persona
-High And Low

I'm going to go with Waking Life, it's animated, includes some philosophy and a little comedy. No random violence though, for that, I'd say Clockwork Orange, but most people have seen it.

City of God
The Prestige
Cloud Atlas
Godfather
Not sure what my 5th is, American Gangster? American Psycho? V for Vendetta? something along those lines

I don't know enough of these films

The Lion King
Enter the Dragon
American Psycho
Spaceballs
blazing saddles

you might like City of God

The Dark Knight
The Godfather
Pulp FIction
Terminator 2
Jurassic Park

check out The Prestige

The Dark Knight

Have you seen The Rover? You seem to like bleak and depressing films and I assume you have seen everything Cormac McCarthy related.

I'm going to suggest The Ghost and the Darkness, based on your liking for movies that start with "The".

Plus it's a lot like The Grey (though I haven't seen that)

Lawrence of Arabia
Predator
Aliens
Amadeus
Barry Lyndon
Eyes Wide Shut, mostly based on Barry Lyndon. I saw it for the first time not too long ago and I thought it was utterly brilliant. It's definitely a slow burn, but I enjoyed the pacing and dream-like atmosphere immensily.

My top 5:

2001: Space Odyssey
Vertigo
The Godfather
Apocalypse Now
Seven Samurai

I'm staring at this thread for a while, unable to contribute, because I read a top 5, instantly come up with a recommendation, but have zero clue why I'm thinking of that movie or how that recommendation would make any sense.

2001: Space Odyssey
Vertigo
The Godfather
Apocalypse Now
Seven Samurai

Instantly thought "Unforgiven". Why? Fuck if I know!

My top 5:

No Country for Old Men
There Will be Blood
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Before Midnight
Airplane!

If you haven't seen No Country For Old Men, which is nearly impossible given that list, you really should.

I've seen it at least 5 times. :p

I might check that out.

I saw that when I was about 10 or 11. lol

I'm going to throw you for a loop and recommend Punch Drunk Love. Not sure why either.

It does have the same director from There Will Be Blood.

Everyone should watch Paris, Texas. Like it should be mandatory viewing for anyone wanting to join the ranks of the cinephiles.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for anyone. This is hard.

But my top 5:

The Avengers
Die Hard
Jurassic Park
Speed Racer
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

ThThere Will Be Blood
kill Bill vol 1
Casino Royale
The Departed
Collateral

That was hard.

It's kinda hard but Scorsese's stuff Goodfellas, Taxi Driver or The Departed. Or Zodiac, Se7en or Fight Club anything by Fincher really.

Anyway....

2001: A Space Odyssey
The Dark Knight
The Social Network
Seven Samurai
Inception
Pan's Labyrinth

Terminator 2

The Avengers

Based on those 5:

The Punisher (2004)
The 5th Element
Mad Max: Beyond The Thunderdome
Beverly Hills Cop
Sin City
The Watchmen
Dredd (2012)

These are a combination of good action films with a touch of comedy or extremely stylish and well-made action films. The combination of which I think encapsulates your list.

6 of my favorite films:

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
The Hunt for Red October
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Empire of The Sun
Edward Scissorhands
The Matrix

Watch The Usual Suspects.

I don't believe you can rank movies across different genres so I'm listing my favorites from genres I can list a best.

Die Hard - best action
Contact - best sci fi/fantasy
Lost in Translation - Best romantic
The Ring - Best horror
Casablanca - Best drama
Home Alone - Best comedy
Seven - Best psychological thriller
Romeo Must Die - Best martial arts
Planetes - Best animated

So you can either try mentioning a category I haven't mentioned yet or try to suggest something better than I have already seen.

My favorite

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Garden State
Terminator 2
Perks of Being a Wallflower
Gangs of New York
