Recommend Adult Anime TV Shows

Michiko E Hatchin wasn't very good, it was a disappointing series. manglobe has only made one great series that being Samurai Champloo thanks to Shinichirō Watanabe, there other series have been average or suck. Ergo Proxy is essential a rip off of texhnolyze series which is much better. Sacred Blacksmith was outright moe bait garbage.

Another series worth checking out:

Haibane Renmei

To reiterate:

Ebichu
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Patlabor
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Monster

To add:

Devil-Man
Vampire Hunter D (both films)
Requiem from the Darkness aka 100 Stories

Now and Then, Here and There.
Seconded. It's about kids, but it's really grim, tells the gruesome tales that happen when in war. Also,

Gantz(anime follows the manga pretty much until the last few episodes, which are really weird, so just ignore those and read the manga afterwards)
It's a pretty crazy manga, about people who get transported to a room with a strange black ball when they die. Feels like Berserk in certain aspects.

Dorohedoro
This is a manga only I think? Was recommended here by someone, turned out to be pretty awesome. It's got action and it's adult themed, though it's not based off historical stuff, it's a fantasy setting in a completely different world.

Monster
I've only read the first two volumes, but from what I've read and heard, it's pretty good. Light on the action (so far), heavy on the detective stuff.

What's that? Is that the Berserk game on the Dreamcast?

there's no such thing as that, it's only "Berserk".

I guess i'll recommend Macross Plus, there's action, mecha, love, music and good animation. watch the 4 part OVA and then watch the movie addition. Does not require your knowledge of the macross (robotech) universe to get into.

serial experiment lain and texhnolyze are very hard to get into, i don't recommend to new comers.

Just got done with Blassreiter and that seems like you may like that. Has action, twists, monsters, death, minimal amount of romance, and no fanservice that I noticed.

OK I have changed my mind about Samurai X TV show. I watched the first 11 episodes of Season 1 (for the introduction of characters), then skipped straight to Season 2. The episodes that I have missed don't matter as they are filler. I finished watching Season 2 last night and really enjoyed it. However I'm not sure if I should watch Season 3, I have heard Season 3 has allot of filler and is not as good as Season 2 as it doesn't follow the manga anymore. So the question is, will I enjoy Season 3 if I enjoyed Season 2.

Glad you liked it :D. Yep, you should probably stop there. There are a few decent episodes from there on out, but none of it compares to what you just watched, and some of it is downright wretched. Read the manga if you get a chance.

As for further recommendations, based on your preference for action and violence over drama and the like...

Gantz and Baccano have a pretty hefty dose of ultraviolence. Black Lagoon is also pretty heavy on the action.

Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex and Second Gig are fantastic, mature shows but have a fair amount of dialogue too...

Really though, you can't go wrong with just about anything suggested in this thread.

"The girl who leapt through time" and "Paprika" are two awesome movies.
"Bakemonogatari" I'm two episodes in, and its a great drug trip.

Just to let you guys know

I am enjoying anime, which I thought was a lame medium.

Since the creation of this thread I have watched Samurai X (up till the end of S2) and Samurai X Trust and Betrayal and Cowboy Bebop. Of course I only watch one show at a time in a slow pace, only watch a couple of episodes before bed.

I have got all of the following anime, thanks to this thread
Baccano
Black Lagoon
Cowboy Bebop
FLCL
Gankutsuou
Gantz
Ghost in the Shell SAC
Ultimate Hellsing
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Samurai Champloo
12 Kingdoms

That collection should last me a long time, once I run out I will be sure to come back for more that I have missed.

Nothing will ever top Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo for me, but I'll recommend Wolf's Rain. One of the most original animes out there.

Third page, and NOBODY has said Detroit Metal City?

I know it doesn't really fit the criteria laid out in the original post (there's absolutely zero character development, and no ongoing story), but DMC is absolutely hilarious, and anybody who likes any form of animation (anime or otherwise) should check it out. One of my friends loves it, and he doesn't care for anime at all.

It's only 12 episodes, and each episode is only about ten minutes long, so you can get through them all really quickly.

Going by your original post I'm not sure how much you would enjoy 12 Kingdoms or FLCL. I would definitely recommend throwing Darker Than Black (1st Season), Gungrave, and Basilik to your list. Other than that, great choices I think you'll enjoy almost all of them.

i feel like, with the exception of gurren lagann, "adult" anime stopped in 2004. the shit japan has been pumping out is just ridiculous...
Posts like this always make me laugh xD Trying to act all elite but citing Gurren Lagan as an adult anime~ I love it but come one.. adult?

Boogiepop Phantom

Seconded. Loved everything about this, especially the audio. Made the mistake of reading the novels, which aren't terribly bad, but have an entirely different tone to it and are geared for middle school girls.

Question for those who watched texhnolyzed. Does it get more interesting/pick up pace? I remember watching this and Ergo Proxy about the same time, and just couldn't get into it. Decided to stick with EP, which was a terrible mistake.

If you're looking for an adult anime I cannot recommend "Monster" enough. It is a 100% adult themed anime, there's no supernatural elements whatsoever, nor any of the typical "anime" style humour and situations.

It deals with a variety of complex topics, psychology, morality, concepts of good/evil, so many facets of the human mind. Probably the most well-written anime I've ever watched. If you're like me it will creep you out, and I don't mean in the blood/gore way (there's a few scenes which do have it, but realistic depictions).

Here's the OP, best of any anime in my opinion:

Though I enjoyed Gurren Lagann, it really felt like DBZ and Gundam mixed together, with a dash of Evangelion. Maybe I need to rewatch it. How are the movies? If they're even out yet.

Gotta agree. Thusfar, manglobe are one-hit-wonders capable of nice animation. Much like Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy started off pretty good...but it turned to shit much quicker.

Watched the first three episodes of monster thanks to this thread, and I have to say that the show seems really horrible. The art is just pathetic, it almost doesn't feels animated at all...and the writing is just ridiculously bad. Does it get any better or should I just drop it if I don't like it by now?

This is a revival from the dead but I am having a itch for anime (haven't watched anything in a couple of years) Any recent adult oriented anime? Or is it long dead?

This season's most sensible show is probably Usagi Drop, by far. AnimeGAF regulars probably know more about last year, though.

Wasn't Gantz just a OVA? I remember watching that long ago, I guess they made a series?

Really appreciate all these recommendations.

Dear god, someone recommended Gantz.

That alone is criminal, but as an "adult" anime ?
You have to be this tall to watch it, right?

This thread Lesser known Anime from the 2000's: Because they still make great anime has a wide variety of works for you to peruse at your leisure.

You shouldn't bother with Season 3, but you most certainly should bother watching Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal. Either the OVA (4 episodes) or the director's cut movie version (same content all put together) work, though I would choose the OVA if I were you, because the episodes end at natural breaks in the story line almost as if they were acts in a play, the OVA and Director's Cut have different music and the OVA's is better, and the Director's Cut adds a few extensions to scenes that I personally think take away from pacing rather than add anything.

Also, fair warning if you're a dub-only sort of person -- Trust & Betrayal not only has poor and incredibly monotonous voice acting on dub, but it also alters the meaning of lines in some cases and takes away from characterization and the story.

It's up to you, though.

Could you clarify as to how you think the writing is ridiculously bad? I couldn't tell you whether you should continue unless I know what your complaint is on that point. I'm leaning towards no, at the moment, though. And you're simply wrong about the art. As far as art and animation goes, while the character designs are not uniformly appealing, the show's animation is about as good as you're going to get for a 74-episode, non-action television show and the backgrounds are detailed.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (it's not what you think, watch to episode 3)
Usagi Drop
Kaiji
Dororon Enma-kun Meramera (very immature but hilarious)
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (see above)
Wandering Son

Nope, 2 13 episode series. They kind of messed up the ending (it's an adaptation of a manga) but still good.

Well, it's not exactly recent, but I'm surprised that Gunslinger Girl wasn't mentioned. It's got violence, political intrigue, Italian architecture, and lots of gun porn.

A required mention from me is of course Kino's Journey. That's just a very mature show in general, even if it's not particularly bloody or sexual.

And if you want something recent, Hidan no Aria is basically a study on every bad 80s and 90s action movie in a campy Japanese high school setting. It is really the most bizarre and ridiculous thing to come out of anime in the last several years, and it's AWESOME.

FYI OP, a lot of people were unhappy with Samurai Champloo. I wouldn't give it high priority on your watch list.

Oh, also Shiki. It's TECHNICALLY shounen (at least the manga is which the anime is based on rather than the novel) but there are plenty of adult themes and the tone isn't really for kids, especially by western standards.

Uh, yeah.

Gantz isn't as ridiculously juvenile as 30,000 responses make it seem. You just need to approach it like Starship Troopers - it's self-fashioned to resemble pulp and ends up being actual pulp (for the sake of perspective, this is the exact opposite circumstance of, say, a Tarantino film).

Would "Future Boy Conan" be a good recommendation? My memory is fuzzy on this show because I watched it when I was a wee lad, but I seem to remember it wasn't juvenile or anything, though maybe a bit lighthearted for what this thread is about.
