This super descriptive poster is of 5 Centimeters a Second, by the way, a series of short films by Makoto Shinkai. I personally really love The Play Promised in our Early Days from him more than anything, though I think that's an unpopular opinion here on GAF thanks to the convoluted plot.

I recommend both these and Voices of a Distant Star, though - they're all beautiful.

A short series with an art style based of the manga/anime of the 1950s. Very abstract. You might like it. (12 episodes, I believe)

Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture

This is one that doesn't get talked about a lot, but should. How to explain...So these two best friends go to Tokyo Agricultural University because they are both involved in their family's business making sake. One of them has the ability to see microbes with his naked eye (they appear as strange, anthropomorphic creatures). It may sound weird, but it's awesome, and kind of educational, too. You'll learn about all sorts of things, like strange foreign food, how to make bootleg-ass booze, athlete's foot, food poisoning, seal anuses, and more! Too bad it's only eleven episodes. The opening and end credits are awesome, too. Just sayin'.

Ghost Hunt if you like Horror.

and Hajimo No Ippo if you like sport and shonen, and woun't mind long Anime.

You better check out Kaiba. It is amazing, a little slow an hard to follow for the first 4 or 6 episodes. But really the last 4 episodes make it worth it, it is incredible.

Hang on a sec, the main guy in this is the same VA from Bebop? If so I think ill start with this!

So Spike is Mugin (sp)? the Lord in the first ep was jets VA if im not mistaken aswell.

All of those are interesting enough, and you'll know if they're for you after a few episodes. Gantz is kinda fucked up though, and they draw out some scenes for so long it's ridiculous.

And someone recommended Code Geass like 5 times in one post -- I wouldn't recommend it. It's interesting enough to see it through, but I thought it was a pretty crappy series in the end.
 
just finished samurai champloo. amazed at how good it was. afraid nothing will be able to top it.

did afro samurai before that, i liked it.

going through cowboy bebop - fantastic, but not enjoying it as much as samurai champloo

any recommendations based on that?

Gantz has a made up shitty ending. So anyone who starts watching that stop with 2 or 3 episodes left to avoid that catastrophe of an ending.

I thought Code Gaess was awesome while not liking Trigun, Eden of the East, and Blue Gender from your list.

Its going to be hard to top Samurai Champloo and Coboy bepop, but i would recommend Gungrave and Black lagoon if you liked those two. you will get an entirly different style but worth it IMO.

Afro samurai was meh, but glad you liked it. Shows that your expectations for Anime aren't that high.

afro samurai was the first anime i watched - i liked the sort of, i dunno, "sergio leone pacing" and i thought the action was good. story was garbage.

Don't avoid Giant Robo, in the very least. It really is a fantastic OVA series.
 
I like the old ones ...

Ramna 1/2 (fun, fights and boobs)

Rayearth (why this isn't more known is beyond me ... it is a classic old school RPG story that becomes an awesome mecha stuff)

Slayers (if you think mecha are way too much and want just old school rpg stuff)

FLCL (lack of more recomendation on this impresses me)

Rurouni Kenshin (the ovas telling hw he got the scars are AWESOME)

For movies, can't go wrong with ghibli, paprika and tekkon kinkret

for the new ones .. i can recomend moyashamon, mononoke and paranoia agent

ALSO ... there are lots of game related anime that you might want to check if you like the game that originated .. like the "Tales of" ones

I did and thought it was shit, couldn't be arsed to watch the last two eps as it wound me up to much :lol then I wikid and found out it a bloody Berserk ending and nothing really gets resolved!

Ive got the count of monti cristo to work through but only managed one and a half eps so far as im to busy with games/life.
Also to view Ive got Brave Story.

Samurai champloo was awesome and I glad I watched it, Soul Eater seemed ok of what I watched kinda reminded me of Disgaea (watched that allready ;) )

Kino's Journey.

Watch it, it's perhaps one of the most profound pieces of literature in a very long time and exemplifies my very life ethic (it didn't write it though). It's really a shame that Tokyopop fucked up so royally in bringing over the work in its original form.

Watch it, love it, be moved. It's really something.

After i finished the series, i was so disappointed to find out only the first two volumes of the LN series were released in english.;_;

I believe it's just the awesome Benizakura Arc in the form of a "movie". Still, Benizakura Arc was fucking sweet.
