Red Dead Redemption 2: Digital Foundry Analysis (2-parts)

I read here some people saying its Sony faults for choosing this resolution to advertise the Pro runnes this game at 4k . I don't think this is the case. LA.Noire remastered supported the Pro and X and in turms if resloution it is the same as RDR2 (Native 4k on x. - 1920x2160 on pro)

This might explain why at 300 (using an OLED) my game looks washed out but the menues look even worse and have artefacts everywhere. Mind boggling why they would do such a poor version of hdr with the attention to detail this world has. It's like cooking an amazing high quality meal then serving it on a paper plate. Crazy.

An update from DF/contributor Adam Fairclough regarding the HDR implementation

So if you've thought it is less than stellar, you're right. It's basically not HDR really. So I'm guessing RAGE isn't capable of working in HDR internally? There's definitely room for improvement there for the next Rockstar game, whatever it may be.

That was a super detailed write up.

Good on DF for highlighting this issue, hope it gets fixed. Using your TV's HDR simulation mode is a better experience at this point.

I love how people on reddit (maybe here as well, dunno) were spinning the shitty HDR implementation as "realistic" and "this is good HDR" and that "we have seen only bad examples of HDR implementation so far, this is the first time it is implemented well". Holy shit, there was a super long post on reddit where someone explained in detail how RDR2s HDR is "good" and that everyone with issues had a shitty TV or it wasn't calibrated right.

i dunno this dumb echo chamber and all but my oled looks better with hdr then off at 300 settings.
off just looks bland and dull.

on looks more dynamic, not washed out mind you. i get a good contrast esp shows well in the intro of this game.
i wish i could take a screenshot but that would be pointless now wouldn't it be?

If you hop over to the thread about RDR2 controls here, that has been a running theme there too. "controls for $ACTION are quite bad" "no, it's realistic - go play a casual game you noob!"

Well, that's lame. Plus, there's no in-game HDR toggle on X1X to boot. Any chance Rockstar patches this sooner rather than later?

I hope, disabling it on the entire console is lame.

Yup, switched to SDR and it looks much better. Hopefully they'll patch the option in-game to the One version too - I don't see them improving the HDR implementation, as that would probably require very fundamental changes to the engine.

I have just tried to disable the HDR and it looks superb now. Seriously, disable HDR guys. The HDR in this game is utterly broken.

It's even funnier if you go onto Reddit and find the people who just said I had a shitty TV when I reported the same for Nier Automata :messenger_squinting_tongue:

The whole HDR thing - not just in RDR2 - I mean in general, is an utter mess.

I'm never really sure if I'm looking at a HDR image or not, I've got a HDR TV - admittedly one of the early ones when this whole HDR 10 bit/HDR 8 bit pseudo HDR debacle was going on. Games look amazing like Horizon Zero Dawn or Spider-Man but without actually comparing it to a TV that is confirmed to be showing HDR, I could be only seeing an amazing image instead of an incredible image.

Question - How is HDR actually implemented into a game? Does it need to be coded in and tweaked by the developer themselves or do they use a ready made program made by an external company and add it in? Or does your TV do most of the leg work?

When I read about this news, I insta-Tweeted @rockstargames to ask them to please fix the broken HDR on both Xbox One X(own this version) and PS4 Pro(skipped for the X version).

4k/HDR folks deserve an unbroken HDR implementation, especially if it's being advertised.

Game looks better with the "HDR" on for my eyes and TV (KS8000/Xbox One X), color looks more natural for the environment, blacks aren't crushed, contrast differentiation seems better and more diffused. I've tried it both ways whatever is happening with SDR doesn't look appealing to me, it's very exaggerated, everything looks blown out and oversaturated, blacks are crushed etc. SDR takes what looks like a realistic western depiction and turns it into the visual comparative of GTAV.

There's a part in the game where I am up to where I'm setting fire to a large area of trees at night (I think it's a night only mission in the Rhodes area)...this is by far the biggest difference I have seen in this game and it's making it really hard to continue to play on the pro as the graphics are actually preventing me from playing the game properly.

Playing on the x1x this scene looks amazing with ambient light and shadows bouncing around the area and you can make out targets to shoot and it runs smooth

Playing the exact same scene on the pro you get a giant wall of blur/white tinge which makes it impossible to make out targets and disabling hdr makes no difference.....the game also slows to an absolute crawl causing you to die repeatedly as enemies flank you.

I'm hoping they can actually patch this as I have been playing through both versions (1 with my son) and he was actually rubbing his eyes as he thought his vision had gone blurry playing the ps4 pro version......he normally cant tell

I'm enjoying being a murderous bastard on 1 and a hero on the other

on Xbox one i took a screenshot while in HDR where you could see rainbow in a fog, but when i viewed it later in SDR (xbox lets you have SDR and HDR version of screenshot) it was just a blob of white/gray but then switching to HDR version i could see the rainbow again...

does this mean my SDR settings are too overblown (would surprise me as i calibrate the brightness/contrast using test patterns and have all things like Dynamic contrast turned off) or can HDR still provide a better gradient in RDR2 even if it doesnt make use of high nits??

I strongly believe that HDR works, even though reading through this thread it seems it doesn't.

Pretty sure it's mostly colors that seem more muted in HDR, which I actually prefer over the non-HDR colors.

Even a friend of mine, who came over last wknd, immediately noticed a clear difference between HDR on and off and also said the game looked better with HDR.

Then again, the tech-experts disagree, so...

Edit:

PS4 Pro, btw.

I'd like a sub-4k mode on the X which keep 30fps more consistently. I can't resolve these tiny pixels from my couch, but I can see all the frame drops.

Can the game on PS4 Pro be set to 1080p on a 4k set or will it force the 4k rendering mode and SS it down to 1080p? I do not have the option to plug into a 1080p set, it's in a 4k set and staying that way.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Set your consoles resolution to 1080p...thats it.
The system level supersampling option is only there if you have it connected to a 1080P display.

Thats because you took the screenshot in HDR. it will only look the way it did in-game by looking at it in HDR. thats comepletely different than turning HDR on or off in the game. also note you can only properly go from SDR to HDR and back on xbox by closing the game and restarting.

Good post, so it's almost how Ubi already had a game running at that rez in a prior title and continued with it.....Since Vgtech says their counts come out mostly 1920 x 2160, it just shows that the CB is botched or not working at all...
Turned off HDR (Xbox One S) and it looks a lot better. Only issue for me now is the god awful frame rate drops in towns. Jaysus.
Glad that more persons are catching up to the HDR situation, so there's definitely a couple of things Rockstar didn't deliver properly on this release.....OTOH, I don't know if you have a PRO, but if you do. Play in 1080p mode and disable SS, you get a locked 30fps...

Could you not... type like this... it feels like... you are either channeling William Shatner... or are unable to form a coherent argument...

Thanks for sharing The Last Word. So the only way we can get a near locked 30fps on Pro is by forcing 1080P resolution at a system level? That's pretty outrageous given the "4K" marketing.

In regards to Keanu's Sausage™:

They're so... juicy. I... can't start the day without... an amazing sausage... in my mouth. That's where... Keanu... comes in.

Yes that's why I believe it's Sony fault they pushed for it so they can advertise it as 4k, that's the marketing campaign in the UK at the mo 'play it in 4k on ps4'. They couldn't allow Xbox to have that power hold over them over even thou the 'play it in 4k on ps4' is false advertising but the average gamer won't know that

Ok without a doubt, the HDR is indeed busted on Xbox One X(don't own the PS4 Pro version so can't comment). Since you cannot turn off HDR via in game settings in Xbox One S, X, you have to go to actual Xbox video settings and uncheck the HDR10 box then simply back out back into the game. The difference is crazy.

It almost seems like Rockstar actually got HDR switched around at least on the Xbox version. When I turn it off, the game becomes very colorful and vibrant, basically what HDR *should* be doing. Once I click the box back on, the picture becomes much less vibrant, very muted colors. I did this like 3 or 4 times and there is a very noticeable difference.

I'll be playing it on my Xbox One X with HDR turned off from this point out. I'm actually so bummed about this(but happy that it looks *BETTER* with HDR off) that I want to start a new game from the beginning to just take in the game with more vibrant colors.

These are *quick* screenshots off my cheap phone and while they aren't the sharpest, they give you a very good idea of the color difference between the busted modes:

HDR ON:

HDR OFF:

If anyone else can check/confirm this on their Xbox One X systems, it would be helpful to the cause!

Does forcing the Pro to 1080p help the IQ at all ?

I have an older 1080p TV. I'm debating on whether or not it's worth getting the Pro/RDR2 bundle and a new 4k TV. I'm far too used to Sony controllers to seriously consider getting an Xbox just for this game.

Is there any UK law that forbids false advertising? Curious what Sony's risk tolerance is for deciding to go with that kind of ad campaign knowing that people are going to find out eventually (gamers+internet=research/scrutiny)

Not only that but if the game is being marketed with HDR being a selling point with the 4k, there's potential issues as well, even in the United States. You can't market a feature and then have the feature not working/missing/busted. Most commonly referred to as "bait and switch" in the States. While I'm not saying Rockstar did this on purpose(there's no reason for them to do so) they really should make a point to patch this issue very quickly(the broken HDR) as it *potentially* could open them up to legal issues.

It fixes the fps to a perfect 30fps and the image is less blurry.

Check this new DF video

I swear, to me the colors with HDR on look much better and more realistic.
Especially the rocks.

With HDR off, it looks far too oversaturated for my taste.

GOW and HZD are the first to come to mind.

I'm aware that there are issues with HDR, but that doesn't change the fact that I prefer the colors of HDR on over off.

Those would have been my picks too, especially GoW - not only are there bright highlights, but it's like there's just more colour. The first time I entered that place with the trees that have red leaves I spent a few minutes just gazing them in awe, although narratively I was in a hurry. They were just so red!

Here though, I found that with the recommended setting of 100 for LCDs, my KS7000 (i.e. KS8000 in the US) didn't look nearly bright enough - at around 300 it's better, but then the black levels were too high (partially due to the TV being only edge-lit, I'm assuming). I ended up turning HDR off and prefer it that way, but if it works for you, great. In the end, a preferable image is highly subjective (just check the KS8000 thread and how wildly different settings people use).
