If only they had GWB or Cheney doing a speech.

This is some serious bull crap non story.

MSNBC getting in the commercials when the clowns with no profile nationally were speaking? I AM SHOCKED!

So your claim is that because they naturally did not show a few of the non-minority speeches that they are in the clear for blatantly keeping minority speeches off the air. Gotta make sure Obama secures the minority vote that he already owns.
Logic fail.

Not exactly this but they are known to twist facts and edit things to fit their narrative. I hate that MSNBC is following Fox's lead even if I'm a democrat. I want facts not lies. You know, things the news are supposed to report. The truth.

Again, this seems a lot worse than just twisting facts. MSNBC isn't following Fox's lead and never has. They're running right along side them.

This has nothing to do with FoxNews.

I hate how every politicized issue can't be looked at on an individual basis. Like, if a Republican says something stupid, like, "legitimate rape," it can't be scrutinized on its own. It has to turn into, "WELL DEMOCRATS SAY DUMB THINGS TOO LOLOLOLOL!!!"

Same goes for this. MSNBC knew what they were doing. It's not a coincidence to cut every single minority speaker. Yes, FoxNews has their own issues. But we're talking about what MSNBC did.

Probably doing the GOP a favor.

well I can't see many Dems wanting to watch RNC coverage like this, maybe they were just catering to the relevant audience

the pattern of cutting away is disturbing, so no, I don't believe that

Nobody is 'marginally better' than Fox. Everyone other network is leagues better and only 1% as contemptible.

They don't directly call for the death of liberals, therefore it's not considered "opinion" by this guy's metrics.

Brett Hume definitely tows the GOP line.

If you watch Shep long enough though, he tends to let slip a few personal thoughts every now and then.

Nikki Haley?

Not showing speeches by some minor political figures that other networks did not show as well is WORSE than making shit up? Do you even consider the shit that you are typing?

Scenario A - MSNBC cuts a ton of smaller speeches which happens to include every minority speaker but not exclusively. This is pretty shoddy coverage but that's to be expected from cable news anyway.

Scenario B - MSNBC shows every non-minority speech and cuts every minority speech. This is really bad for reasons beyond the usual negligence.

So which is it?

Yeah except for the minority's speech they did show they didn't show any!

Not him - I meant Bret Baier

It doesn't matter. They'll tell you he's just as biased as Hannity.

This is what is so pathetic about politics these days. People just make up their own "facts" in their head. Your comment was mostly valid. MSNBC passes off it's opinion pundits as journalists, covering events. Fox at least tries to draw some line between the two, and for the most part they succeed.

This does not mean I actually enjoy either network, and in fact I don't. I think they're both garbage, but I call em like I see em.

They didn't, there is a note at the end of the article saying they didn't (albeit in a round about way).

"Not showing" is about the softest way possible you could say it. Try again.

Actively hiding the fact that the other party has minorities as members is a lot worse than you're making it seem.

Msnbc isn't as bad as Fox... yet. They're trying their hardest to be though.

Nope, that's not misleading at all!

I can't hardly stand either side anymore and almost prefer to get my news from Comedy Central so I can at least laugh about the politics in our country. I am getting fed up with almost every bit of it. You have to wade through tons of crap to figure out what people actually stand for. Often you have to lead your own private investigation.

Show me the white people they did keep on the air for speeches. If any of them are less well-known/important/popular than the Puerto Rican Governor's wife and a House candidate from Utah, maybe I'll switch sides of this argument.

Have you seen pictures of Ted Cruz and Brian Sandoval? To the average American, they don't exactly scream "minority."

Again, I don't even like MSNBC. I would love to have a reason to catch them doing something stupid and make fun of that shitty network. But this isn't a good reason.

Softest? That is exactly what this article is accusing them of.

Perhaps you should consider the fact that none of these speakers are nationally known and were propped up as tokens by the RNC to make up for their lily-white primetime speech lineup.

One thing I despise about MSNBC is that it seems like they put their opinion people on all news coverage.. Maddow, Matthews; etc

Fox puts non-opinion people on theirs.. Shepherd Smith, Brett Hume;etc

You never see Hannity or O'Reilly covering actual news

Shep Smith is well known and liked for his opinions. They're just kind of wacky and harmless instead of the hatred that comes out of most of his coworkers.

To be fair, the RNC seems to be doing a good job on its own cutting the speeches from minorities.

Guess you didn't see Tom Brokaw last night then did you...

And-- wait what? Brit Hume is "non-opinion people"?

Inherently wrong arguments like this are why most of GAF leans left.

It's that sad that people think Fox News or MSNBC even established some line between opinion and news. They are opinions 24/7. You want to see how real news news cable do it? Watch CNN International.

Shep is too good of a dude to be on Fox. He should either be anchoring one of the evening news shows on one of the big 3 networks or work for BBC America.

The artical is accusing them of worse than simply not showing minor political figures. They're saying msnbc actively minimized speeches given by minorities.

Perhaps you should consider that not every minority is a default liberal and some of these people *gasp* are successful.

I find it funny that the GOP has such a small pool of minority speakers. A few cuts to commercial and you've accidentally ignored all of them.

Ok, since people aren't too concerned with whether the treatment was exclusive or not, I'll go ahead and change the thread title.

Actively hiding the fact that the other party has minorities as members is a lot worse than you're making it seem.

Why is MSNBC under any obligation to prop up the GOP's minorities to make them seem like they have a bigger role than they actually have?

So if the GOP is only composed of racists, what does that make those minorities that are in the GOP? Do they hate themselves or something?

Shouldn't it be "MSNBC cuts some speeches"? Because they showed Nikki Haley's speech and I'm fairly certain she's not white.

Weren't most speeches cut in general due to time constraints from the iffy schedule created by the hurricane causing them all to lose a day?? I was told that the delegate speeches had to be compressed by half.

I love that dude. Totally a straight shooter. He definitely deserves a chance at the bigs. I think he'd be great on NBC Nightly or CBS Evening. Ooh, or Nightline.

There were at least 6 minorities speaking last night, I believe. 5 were cut out by MSNBC. And this wasn't all because of commercial breaks. MSNBC decided that viewers should hear the idiots like Ed Shultz blabbing on about something rather than showing the actual speeches. IMO, this can be seen as an indictment of cable news networks in general.

My first reaction to this was that this was a disgusting and manipulative action on MSNBC's part.

Then I started to question...

How many minority speakers does the RNC have?

How many high-profile/key-note type speakers does the RNC have?

All the central figures in the GOP are old white men. If you're going to run a commercial break, you would do it when a minor figure is speaking. Unsurprising, in the GOP, minor figures = minority figures.

Since when is an Indian-American not a minority?

How can you accuse of MSNBC trying to create a narrative for its own agenda, when the fact that Nikki Haley's entire speech was covered is not considered when reaching the conclusion that "no minorities got full coverage."?

Sometimes just opportunistic.

Since the Dems are more minority-friendly, there are lots of minorities in the Democratic party and as a minority you'll still be waiting in line behind lots of others if you're trying to make a political career.

However, since the GOP caters to rich white men and tends to draft hateful legislation against minorities, said minorities usually don't join the party for obvious reasons. Still, they know they need to at least try to get some minority votes if they can fool some of them into voting for them, so this provides an aspiring minority politician with a great opportunity to be fast tracked up the ladder, so to speak. They just need to fall in line and basically sell out to do it.

Wait so they cut some non-minorities? What are we debating here?

edit: Wait, they actually showed some minority speeches too? Why does this thread even exist?

Don't get me wrong. MSNBC is trash but lol.

Ok, since people aren't too concerned with whether the treatment was exclusive or not, I'll go ahead and change the thread title.

They didn't cut every minority speech. A lot of them, sure.

So if the GOP is only composed of racists, what does that make those minorities that are in the GOP? Do they hate themselves or something?

The fact that you say this as though internalized self-hatred is a bizarre and ridiculous notion is revelatory of how little you actually know about racism.

Yeah after looking into it. This doesn't hold. Not only did they actually have a minority covered, but there were non minorities that weren't shown also.

Wait so they cut some non-minorities? What are we debating here?

We aren't debating anymore, now that this is all known lol. MSNBC and Fox news are both ridiculous. But this is clearly a stretch.

While MSNBC is mostly terrible and pandering, it is not equivalent to Fox, and attempts to paint it as such fall under the bizarre American tendency toward 'impartial' 'centrism' as reasonable and objective. "They both do it!" is true only if we accept and allow that one 'side' does it worse.

Also MSNBC has Up w/Chris Hayes, the best news program on any news network in America, so they're just that little bit more redeemable.
