Reddit's new CEO posts the new groundrules for the future

If the Chimpire is allowed to exist the whole thing is empty rhetoric.
That's today's TLDR, if anyone asks you about it.
Wikipedia: "Governments, private organizations and individuals may engage in censorship. "
Would you then agree at least that there's a fundamental misunderstanding of First Amendment rights by many of these persons? Even if you want to define it as censorship there's still the total farce of the idea these people have that they're entitled to a platform for this stuff.
On that day, the world will awaken to a new dawn.
Today was a fantastic opportunity to set a new tone going forward across all public forums and social media that this kind of bullshit online just isn't cool. Instead we've been told that it all deserves a sheltered home. Goddamn internet. GAF has spoiled me by reminding me that communities of good people actually exist. And as such it's no small irony that there's such a disturbingly large movement of people who actively express their hatred of this place.
These are exactly the sort of 100% reasonable and well-articulated concerns that Reddit needs to be addressing and they are instead choosing to deliberately ignore them. I feel like a fool for thinking that Reddit was actually going to change its ways even in the slightest.

/r/coontown isnt banned? Why is talk of reddit even allowed anymore? It's confirmed to be a racist sexist shithole. I'm glad gaf-mods are doing what they can to contain the shitposters. This is truly the only place on the internet where I feel it's safe to talk.

Ctrl+F "first amendment" in the reddit thread, tell me what you find. Because while I see people talking about "free speech," and that is a phrase commonly associated with the First Amendment, I don't think many of the "free speech"ers are specifically talking about the First Amendment.

I think most Reddit users, even the blatant racists, recognize that Reddit has no legal obligation to let them speak, just as the Neogaf mods realize that racism and homophobia are not illegal. But Neogaf is shaping the community it wants, and Redditors on all sides are speaking up about the community they want.

I really think /r/coontown should be banned, but I can see why they're afraid to do it -- when they banned fatpeoplehate, people from there literally invaded every notable subreddit. They don't want that drama happening again.

Of course, they could just ban the users, but they're extremely reluctant to do admining instead of leaving it up to the subreddit mods. :\ it's stupid.

Reddit isn't a racist shithole, humanity is. Reddit was just more or less founded on the idea that they'd let people be people there without oversight. As it turns out, a lot of people don't want to see others being people.

People are the worst.

Censorship means a third party getting in the way of speech between two other parties.

I mean, that's literally exactly what it means. The government is an example of *a* third party, but it's not the only one.

It's kind of hilarious how the "THIS IS AGAINST MY RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH" claim being always wrong has swung so far in the opposite direction that now clear censorship is somehow not censorship. Whether one agrees or disagrees with this censorship is fair (or even if you think it should go further, like most people in this thread seem to believe) but it's censorship.

One day the racist shitheels and fat shaming fuckholes and misogynistic tools and gamergate morons will learn what the word "censorship" means.

On that day, the world will awaken to a new dawn.

And that's why they're sort of ultimately screwed. They can't bring the hammer down. And their plans and aspirations for growth as a website kind of require not being known as "that website that hosts all of the awful racist shit". They're caught between a rock and a hard place.

Ohanian has recently said that Reddit was NOT founded on people saying what they want without oversight, and gave examples of how early on in reddit he got rid of many questionable things.

Black people are simply worth less in the eyes of reddit admins. He can't get rid of the other subreddits and leave that up. It makes them look delusional.

He said that, now, when it is a problem for them. There are dozens of examples of the other founders and other admins in the past flying the "Reddit is a haven for free speech" banner high while it served their interests. His mistake was saying that it wasn't founded on those ideas, because that's flat out bullshit. They don't want it to be based on those ideas going forward. That test failed. But saying "Things change, grow up and shut up" wasn't going to go over well so instead he just lied and that didn't go over very well either.

Are people legitimately surprised that coontown and it's ilk aren't going anywhere?

Because I'm not.

I get linked to the occasional funny reddit story from various friends, and I'm quite fond of both tales from tech support and the FFXIV subreddit, but outside of that, fuck them.

You know, I'd be okay with this if /r/Coontown mods were really working at not inciting violence or going abroad and harassing individuals. But a few comments in that thread have sourced very clear examples of Coontown doing just that, and lots of people are using mental gymnastics to exclude it or handwave it away.

Also, who gives a shit about censorship on someone's site? It's their site, you're not entitled to have your words hosted on another person's site. I love a lot of Reddit but god damn are a ton of people idiots.

They're not, they're just being dumb.

How do they grow the way they want to? They can stay in this holding pattern, but they don't make a profit and they still want to turn it into a viable company. What do they do to get rid of this shit if getting rid of it causes it to explode?

I suppose if they had the money they could actually pay some people to do some serious deep-clean moderation and bannings until everything's purged, but that's an endeavor they don't seem too interested in. Maybe they will in six months.

You notice that when someone wants to praise X forum/site. They say they moderate.

If they want to criticize or talk down X forum/site, they complain about censorship.

GAF moderates and Reddit is going to censor.

See how it works?

Exactly, but if that is the story he is going with now they need to keep the boots on his neck.

Every single subreddit that was recently banned should be brought back. They can't have their cake and eat it to. Its not like any real company is going to want their advertisements on a site with a "NSFW" filter blocking a bigger white supremacist forum than storefront.

You figure out how to weather the explosions.

They have every right to censor what is and isn't allowed on their site. Well, the idea of ownership of what is essentially a community is a difficult one for me to accept, but they pay the bills so at the end of the day it's their decision. I don't have a problem with that, but denying that it's censorship isn't helping the discussion. It's just giving people one scratch in the armor that they can attack instead of the actual issue at hand of "Maybe we could not all be cunts sometimes"

Censorship is something the state does.

Reddit is not a government entity. Ergo, not censorship.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship

Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other groups or institutions.[1]
Governments, private organizations and individuals may engage in censorship.

It's censorship, but they have the right to censor whatever they want on their own website. Users have the choice not to frequent the site if they disagree.

It's true, it really throws a wrench in the discussion and everybody has to stop and clarify the playing field with each other, or argue about the playing field, before they can even use that field to advance debate.

Celebrating censorship? I mean it's their site so they can ban what they want. I just don't see the supporting of censorship as a good thing.

Ugh.

Reddit ------------------> Voat

You can't post that shit on GAF either. Why have an account in a place so heavy with the censorship?

GAF moderates and Reddit is going to censor.

See how it works?

I don't know what your point is of replying to me, although I agree with the content of your post.

We'll see if they're serious.

If they're really against that type of behaviour, then /r/shitredditsays won't be around much longer.

You do realize that SRS, for all intensive purposes, has been quiet for nearly two years?

Or is the SRS = bad boogeyman being perpetuated by outside users again?

They should keep the hateful/racist/etc subreddits, but make them like roach motels. As soon as you opt-in to one, you can no longer use that account to post anywhere else on the site.

I'm not agreeing with the content on reddit, but there are different expectations between the content on Neogaf and reddit.

I wouldn't expect to find porn on Neogaf, but reddit doesn't have an issue with it.

I can only speak for the brigading they do on comments they dislike and the doxxing of people they find distasteful.

Also, not to be a dick, but it's 'for all intents and purposes', not 'all intensive purposes'.

It's being perpetuated on reddit as well.

The entire time of the /fph debaucle, defenders of the subreddit kept point to SRS as being just as bad.

I would have taken it one step further that objectionable material as defined by the administrators would be removed. So no place for terrible subreddits. If people want to practice their freedom of speech, they could go elsewhere.

And you can still find porn subs on reddit it just needs an account and for you to opt in in your settings. It's just weird seeing people cry censorship because they are finally implementing some sort of moderation for all the vile subs on that place (though still allowing a bunch of vile ones as long as it doesn't encourage illegal stuff).

Like, you can still find your black or gay hate groups, they will just be NSFW now. You can still find you porn gifs or gonewild they will just need you to opt in to NSFW stuff. They are just taking a stance on the actual illegal shit that could end up with them in trouble like child porn or posting peoples private information and getting groups together to harass or threaten people.

I mean, yeah, in a way it is censorship by not allowing the crazy people who want to share or find that stuff but it's also, you know, not stuff you should be sharing or looking for in the first place.

I think you've misread my post or are replying to the wrong one. I'm just saying that the people on reddit have different expectations as to the content of that site than as we do on Neogaf.

I'm not anti-censorship on reddit, I think it's great they're getting rid of all the shit hateful subreddits.

I just hope they apply the rules across the board. Subreddits that exist to ridicule and bully people shouldn't exist in my opinion.

This changes nothing though because I am 100% sure subreddits like Coontown were already "NSFW" when you would click on a link from it.

No, these subreddits are quite openly racist. /r/coontown users don't even insist they have black friends. They hate all black people, and think you should, too.

But will they agree to be intentionally labeled as Racist and will others click "I'm racist" in order to view the trash? Even neo Nazis deny being racist.

At the end of the day it comes down to Reddit being a business and they get money from the users (ad views, gold subs etc) so while a sub like /r/coontown is vile, they still alow it because it will let them get money and they've swept it into the corner so you only find it if you go looking or knew about it before hand.

You'd think those kind of hate subs would go because it encourages hate, the reasoning they use for that rape sub that it encourages rape. I think all the hate subs should go, hate subs against blacks, gays, women, individuals, other sites etc. What I don't understand is getting rid of the fat hate one (which was vile) but sweeping the black hate one away. Maybe the black hate subs have more viewers so they get more money?

Yeah sorry about that bit of both and a bit of adding in another thought.

Once more, that was nearly two years ago. They've fell silent, and the admins themselves said a year ago that as long as SRS continued to act as they have, which is relatively silent and not going past the boundaries of their own sub, then they wouldn't be banned. Granted, it's under new administration now, but SRS will probably stay if they continue to stay in the shadows.
