Reggie calls out unsatisfied fans

I really really like Super Mario World but for the life of me trying to see what people mean when they say its an innovative title

the amount of free passes nintendo has received is just dumbfounding. i think now that there is an equal playing field, people can now see the corners they have cut and the quality put in by ps3/360.

if only sony would have gotten more love in the beg of this gen...
Free passes? Nintendo has been getting lambasted for their mistakes for years, most especially with the Wii. But they haven't really let up with high quality game releases, so people continue to appreciate the company for what it does do right.

Don't act like Nintendo's merely a joke that everyone falls for.

It really felt like a massive game back then for a platformer. The way they handled the world map was nothing short of perfect, and it baffles me as to why nintendo hasn't gone back to that

I wouldn't say it was radically innovative though. It just made a lot of really solid improvements in a lot of ways (though some might prefer the level design of smb3 more, as they felt really different)

But...but I'm a hardcore gamer! I'm supposed to be a dudebro and like blood and guns. That might make me gay cause you know I was told by GAF, G4, and the other dudebros liking Nintendo would ruin my rep on Xbox Live! I'm hardcore bro!

At 9:11pm and 10:22pm CST, ferr and AlphaDump declared overall lack of quality titles since Luigi's Mansion. "Dumbfounding amounts of free passes and 'tons of truth" rumoured to be laid down, more at 11!

Don't you remember?

The DS tanked, the Wii never took off, and the 3DS has no games

Nintendo has been dying a slow death ever since Luigi's Mansion. Got lucky with that Wii craze among the elderly.

haha no, what i meant by agreeing with the comment is that while there have been great games since, but they were already proven IPs. Luigi's Mansion took Luigi out of the mario universe and put into his own stand alone title, and it missed the mark. People aren't screaming for new Luigi's Mansions for that exact reason. Anyway, another attempt at a new IP was Wii Music. Pikmin is okay, i guess, but compared to what the competition is pumping out, not even close. New direction of Metroid? Yeah, that too.

Yeah its an evolution of the formula, which is just as good in many cases.

But the way people are selling it, think the 2nd coming of 2D platforming.

Woah, WHAT?

People have been upset about the lack of a sequel to Luigi's Mansion for YEARS. It didn't move trillions of units, but it did well and has a pretty big following all things considered...

...Which is why there's a sequel to begin with. If it "missed the mark", why would they have bothered with a followup?

Jesus, why don't we just rename the thread Nintendo Hate General? At this point, it's indistinguishable from what I'd see on that other website.

We get an amazing revival in Kid Icarus: Uprising.

We got a genre defining game in Mario Galaxy.

We got.. a generation defining game in Wii Sports.

I think they are doing well for themselves.

But over the past week, I've learned its mean I'm a sheep stuck in the Nintentrix.

Lambasted by whom? videogame journalism and regular media outlets held the wii as the second coming that was truly innovative, yet it wasn't even true 1:1 at launch. It was cheap, and in retrospect is obvious now, but then it wasn't even a question when it was released. It did get a free pass, and it's why so many wii's are collecting dust now.

Well Reggie, how about releasing games in the US that have ALREADY been translated into English and released in Europe. Maybe thats why we are complaining.

Word.

I had tons of fun playing the first Luigi's Mansion. A sequel is more than welcome.

I don't know about anybody else, but when the Wii U was first announced I was excited.

I thought to myself that Nintendo's games were finally going to get the justice they deserved being displayed in glorious HD.

I eagerly watched Nintendo's E3 hoping to get a glimpse of Mario in HD. Something as fantastic as Mario 64 was.....

I expected them to come in and blow everybody away with Nintendo's new direction. Show Nintendo fans that Nintendo really did care about them.

Instead we got them catering to the same shit Wii crowd that made them post a lost for the first time ever....

I was disappointed and put off from buying the wii U at launch. I will now take a wait and see approach and see if they are going to do the same shit with the Wii U as they did with the wii.

just my opinion though.

2D Mario not been real Mario games..people not wanting a sequel to Luigi's Mansion..

Is like I live in some kind of alternate universe. :p

Time Paradox! :p

It continually got lambasted for the software droughts, the horrible online, the focus on mini-game collections, the lack of 1:1 (as you mentioned), the bad 3rd party support, the questionable VC release schedule, among other things.

My point was that, while Nintendo made their mistakes, they also still put out good games, and the Wii itself built up a strong and varied library over time. Whether or not it was on the level of the other systems is beside the point. And that said, even in the beginning, while games like Wii Sports weren't 1:1, they were still a blast to play and helped re-invigorate social gaming in the living room. And then when Nintendo did finally release their 1:1 game, Wii Sports Resort, it was also excellent, but the company did receive flack for not supporting the Wii MotionPlus more, and they also got flack for dumping their other peripherals.

While people had to play the waiting game, they did eventually get their 3D Marios, Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, new Kirby games, Donkey Kong, surprises like Punch Out! and Sin & Punishment 2, Zelda, solid VC and WiiWare titles, and other things. The Wii had its ups and downs, but Nintendo did provide some great experiences, and third parties didn't always drop the ball either. The outcome of the Wii probably wasn't as strong as the DS but it brought some great gaming to the table; you just had to appreciate the system for what it was.

(A LOT of people appreciated it for what it was.)

And this is all just the Wii. I'm pretty sure I wasn't imagining how the 3DS was getting slammed for its lackluster launch and too-high price point.

Every company gets free passes, and Nintendo's no exception. But it's not like they've completely sucked hard since the days of the Gamecube and everyone's blindly forgiving the company. That's all hyperbole and selective abstraction; people love to focus on the bad and not the good.

Bro 1: Yo Bro 2, wanna go chug some brewskies and play some Unfinished Swan?

Bro 2: You know it Bro 1! After that let's blast through Tokyo Jungle! Shit's so cash!

Yeah, AFTER the gigantic free pass at the beg of the gen. Which is why they are so blindly confident in doing the exact same thing with the WiiU. I mean shit, you basically just described the WiiU debut at e3.

When I saw people say that in this thread I literally laughed. They HAD to be trolling. I won't accept any other possibility.

I wanted Nintendo to drop the gimmicks and come back with a strong, next gen console. Instead they're still trying to save money and make that lightning strike twice, which I am extremely doubtful will happen. I think the people that bought a Wii and sat on Wii Sports the entire gen will continue to sit on Wii Sports and ignore the U.

I wanted them to make an original Mario game that played to the strengths of that (nonexistant) console like World/SNES, 64/N64, and (to a lesser, non-launch degree) Sunshine/GC and Galaxy/Wii. Instead they show NSMB2, now with more gimmicks and still starring two placeholder toads.

Luigi's Mansion was a decent GC tech demo, I am very surprised to hear that anybody cared for it to the point where they'd be excited for a sequel.

So yeah, fans expect the great Nintendo of old, get the new, cheap Nintendo.

At least their portables are still good.

So, aside from the major parts of the game that we can agree are boring and uninspired, the rest was amazing? Got it.

Yeah, the gameplay was amazing and on par with World and SMB3. So, the important part, not the part people on the internet love to freak out about.

At least their portables are still good.
The 3DS is nice but it had a rough start, and Nintendo's release schedule for the eShop, especially in regards to VC titles, is as questionable as ever. Upcoming releases are looking good.

The Wii U looks to have a much stronger launch/launch window lineup than the 3DS, at least. To me that's a good sign. And if things go rough in the beginning, Nintendo will just go into panic mode like they did with the 3DS and will start kicking ass and being less arrogant.

I see things turning out just fine. Some folks just prefer to be pessimistic.

New super Mario bros is basically nntendo's very own call of duty. They can pump a new one out every year and people will buy it up just because.

Fuck that shut give me a proper sequel to Super Mario 64 and show what Retro Studios new game is

People will probably give you shit about getting it wrong on how close together the NSMB releases are but your analogy is dead-on.

Four games in six years. And we haven't even played two of them yet.

How is it dead on? It's been nearly three years since peoples' first experience with NSMB Wii, which was a great game and a big improvement over the original.

What's wrong with wanting to play a follow-up? People don't play "just because." They play because it's fun, and in the case of NSMB Wii, it brought people together in a way that no Mario game previously has. It innovated right under peoples' noses.

The point that it's different from CoD (because CoD games literally come out every year) is valid, barring the idea of NSMB games playing similarly and CoD games playing similarly. The analogy isn't dead-on; if it was, people would bring up the same stink with all series that have sequels and follow-up games.

Kind of agree, i was mad hyped for wii u but i dont know they just totally misfired at E3. All they really showed was pikmin, nintendo land isnt for me as i dont have anyone to play local mp with and alough i like the "new" mario games they arnt a real mario. Not to mention the total lack of hype towards the machines power and its online setup.

Now i read its my fault, i want to much really reggie. Your going there this early, you should be able to hype the shit out of people pre launch that is your job to sell this machine. I really hope they have alot more to share closer to launch to get people excited as i just dont see the excitement around for wii u.

It's pretty insulting for Reggie to say that considering that NoA skates by on the least amount of effort possible most of the time. They never try to really compete for customers until they are in trouble.

Regarding the points he made, Pikmin is really the only one with any merit. Having a Mario launch title isn't the saving grace of a system. It should be part of the backbone of a solid launch, but it needs to be supported by a strong selection, this isn't the SNES days anymore. (Plus, it's pretty ballsy to say that before the game has even come out.)

And the Nintendo Land comment? Please. Whether or not the game is fun, this is not what fans mean when the want Nintendo to make use of their dormant franchises, and he knows that.

His constant arrogance is extremely off-putting.

So, aside from the major parts of the game that we can agree are boring and uninspired, the rest was amazing? Got it.

Yeah... as in the actual gameplay was amazing. Nintendo makes platformers that are a step above the rest. They are just really fun.

I'm as annoyed to see NSMB U announced instead of a 3D Mario as the next guy, but at the same time, I remember what someone said about how people would probably love NSMB U if it just looked different and had the same exact gameplay. If it looked like Rayman Origins, for example, I bet people would be gushing about it.

I'm not say it's wrong, but it's an observation. I would probably be one of those people. There is something so completely bland and unexcited about the NSMB graphical style.

My issue is that we're not seeing the evolution of 2D Mario that the series deserves. Are Nintendo forgetting the Super Mario World games? I.E - Amongst two of the best titles they've ever made.

New super Mario bros is basically nntendo's very own call of duty. They can pump a new one out every year and people will buy it up just because.

Ignoring the massive amount of spinoffs and cameos, Super Mario Bros. 1/ArcadeVS/2/USA2/3/World came out in a span of 5 years.

This is really nothing new to get bent out of shape over.

So, aside from the major parts of the game that we can agree are boring and uninspired, the rest was amazing? Got it.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is some of the most fun local multiplayer I've played this entire generation, and the level design is wonderful and great for both single and multiplayer. It's an excellent game, tons of fun especially if you have friends to play with.

...but where's Elite Beat Agents 2?

New super Mario bros is basically nntendo's very own call of duty. They can pump a new one out every year and people will buy it up just because.
Oh, and don't you dare dislike it (not hating it, or going outrageously angry about it), because if you do, you're a dudebro. I found NSMB Wii to be pretty "meh" as both a Mario game and a platforming title, but it seems that anything with the 'Mario' name on it deserves all kind of praise and whatnot. Galaxy 1/2 were amazing, Mario games or not.

I think the problem is simply the same problem the Wii had for its entire lifespan - Nintendo's first party titles are stretched too thin. They can't possibly satisfy the fans' desire for games all by themselves. That's where the third parties come in, and where the Wii fell flat on its face. Nintendo has yet to convince anyone that the Wii U will be different.

To be honest if there was a few more third party games and more information on games behond Wii U launch, as well as showing the 3DS XL then it would of been fine.

Presentation was their key issue during their presentations.

They should of also money hatted or got Watch Dogs on Wii U. It would of been amazing after the Ubisoft conference and the next day they show it again and are like "Watch Dogs is for Wii U" - even if it was multiplatform it would of generated an amazing amount of hype.

That and Pikmin is very niche, not every Nintendo fan wants it. Just like not every Nintendo fan is happy with the 5 Mario games shown.

This is really nothing new to get bent out of shape over.

And all those games barring 2(jp) are all wildly different, which is more or less his point. Nintendo didn't release 2 here initially because it was too similar. And yet if you put NSMB Wii and NSMBU next to each other, how many people do you think would be able to tell the difference?
