Simple controls, nice graphics and catchy music. As far as I know, this favourite genre of mine has been as good as dead for a number of years now. Not even the DS seems to be getting any quality side-scrollers besides the usual Mario and Castlevania games, even though the sales for NSMB were huge. So, is that it? Should we consider the 2d side-scroller to be dead and gone for good?

I'm sure I forgot a bunch of awesome games.

I never played it. The only Shinobi related game I've played is Shadow Dancer on the Amiga.

The DS is still gettting a few..heck, even the Wii got Super Paper Mario a few months ago, which is basically a 2D side-scroller..that gives you the "power" to move in 3D sometimes...so is not like the genre is dead..plus the Wii has it's VC games..so yo ucan replay many of the classic ones..or in the 360 at the Arcade.

Hopefully a game like Little Big Planet will encourage a developer to start working on a beautiful side-scroller. Give me a Ranger X with LBP's level of graphics and I'd splooge gallons.

I think I'm going to cry. The OP was beautiful. You might not have posted every great 2D game there is, but you did a great job and the formatting was nice.

Super Paper Mario doesn't count, Fernoca. That game has nothing, NOTHING, on old 2D gaming. But, yeah, the Wii is a great tool for replaying these games. Unfortunately, only about 5% of the ones posted are actually available so far.

One of the best side scrolling games ever. Shinobi III outclasses every game in the series for the pure action element alone. (And I have a HUGE soft spot for the arcade versions of Shinobi and Shadow Dancer)

I personally want to kill every person who posted that the OP has failed because he didn't include X game. You think he can put a screen shot of every game ever made? How about commenting on the subject?

And yeah, my favourite genre as well. That collection of screen shots almost brought a tear to my eye. Thankfully though, the genre does occasionaly get an amazing new release. Such as Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins.
