Remember 2d side-scrollers? (56k)

somewhere, sometime, future-gaf's gaming discussion page just had a thread pop up titled "remember first person shooters? (t1 no)"

Odin Sphere? Alien Hominid? Castle Crashers? Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow? Castlevania Portrait of ruin? Heavy Weapon? etc etc
You're just not looking very hard.

Most common genre by far. Lotta great games, controls usually worked great. If only third person games had an average quality level that high.

I way prefer 2D sidescrolling gameplay than 3D open-worldness.. The main reason.. is that most devs haven't figured out how to effectively use the extra dimension, as well as figuring out a camera system that pisses off the least amount of gamers.

If some of the 3D platforming hackjobs I've played within the last decade were remade on a 2D engine, the dev would be hung. and maybe castrated.

**** yeah Super Metroid! Seriously, 2D platformers include a lot of the best games ever made. I wish they'd make more of them.

im sure someone on ZedGammaGAF, there would be threads with people just finding out about God Hand and other people remembering videos games that require you to hold a controller.

First post is enough to bring a tear to your eye...

So true.

Sometimes I hate 3D platformers...

unfortunately they're pretty much all I can get for my consoles if I still want to play a platformer.

And with the abysmal sales of console 2D platformers like DK: Jungle Beat, it's not likely to get any better.

Then again, Mario Galaxy and the new Ratchet game look great. I just wish we could see more 2D games as well.

**** YEAH! That game is the shit! It was actually the first game I ever played, and was hooked from then on.

EDIT: That's it. I'm busting out the TG-16.
YEAH TG-16 FOR LIFE!!!!
I still play mine when I feel the need for some Falcon or Vigilante

The Virtual Console needs a bigger library. I understand why they're releasing just a couple a week, but geez, sooo many classics I'd love to see there. Shame licenses and rights cause problems for so many games.

Was anyone a fan of the GI Joe games on the NES? I played the first one so many times as a kid. The Atlantis Factor was less cool, but still a favorite.

oh what a bleak and horrible future we live in!

I just saw a screenshot of Journey to Silius in the op post, damn, I thought nobody remembered that game!
I used to play the hell out of that game despite the fact it was short. I still remember as a kid thinking those opening still shot "cutscenes" outlining the story with that slow "ominous by 8-bit standards" music was the most epic thing ever.

GREAT thread. I absolutely love 2D sidescrollers. In fact, I've been playing nothing but the past couple of months. Recent games have done nothing to excite me. Been re-playing all my classic Marios, GBA Metroids and I just got my first Castlevania game(Aria of Sorrow). Unfortunately, it seems that even the DS is getting more of the 3D treatment these days. If even a quarter of 2D sidescrollers came out as FPS games do these days I'd be a very content gamer.

could anyone find me a ROM??

i've been wondering about a game for ages that i have the fuzziest memory of, but it was pretty cool. all i could remember was that you would go through doors that were in trees. so obviously this game strikes me as familiar

Wizard and Warriors. One of my favorite games by Rare. Good luck on the ROM...can't help you with that one.

Well the DS has New Super Mario Bros. Super Princess Peach, Wario Master of Disguise, Yoshi's Island DS, Viewtiful Joe, Castlevanias and a few more.

I'm guessing we will see a NSMB2.
