Remember 2d side-scrollers? (56k)

No .... Super Contra????

Another one I would like to add is Super Advanture Island(I think that's what its called) on SNES. The one that you travel from island to island in ARPG style to rescue the princess. You can buy various weapon and magic for him, gain more money in casino. Can anyone get a real name of the game?

I always enjoy a good round of Golden Axe. Doesn't take long to beat either.... something about swing a sword... so therapeutic...

Hrmm... GA is probably pushing the definition of 2D side-scroller, isn't it? It's not 3D... but it is 2D with *cough*.. modest z-buffer? :D

How this thread got to page 3 with no one mentioning the AWESOMENESS that is the Turrican series (Turrican 2 for the Amiga... oooh) is beyond me.

lol indeed there it is!!

The page loading was slow and turrican is way below in the OP, didn't give it time to load! o:)

My faith in this thread has been restored, thx!

Totally sucks that all the images in the OP are blocked at work :(

2-D platformers are one of my favorite genres of gaming, too. There are a few 3-D platformers I've enjoyed, but none of them come even remotely close to some of the classics for me...

i really think duck tales is one of the most impressive 2d sidescrollers on the nes, and it has quite a bit to do with the introduction of a unique play mechanic that isn't present in any other game. what would otherwise be a completely average game is made wholly unique by the fact that only it and its sequel have this bizarre cane pogo stick.

as much as i loved new super mario brothers, one of my problems with the original mario brothers platformers is that i just don't find running and jumping through 2d environments as interesting as having some unique ability that makes me more capable of navigating in that environment. the klonoa games have the wind bullet, which is a simple thing that makes the game twice as interesting.

this probably functions to the opposite in 3d platformers, where the more abilities and gadgetry you're given the more dilluted and goofy the game becomes (i.e., super mario sunshine's fludd pack, which i enjoyed but thought just jumping around without it was more interesting)

Great list. You pulled out a few that I haven't seen in a long time such as Kabuki.

I would like to add BattleToads, and Double Dragon.

The daddy weeps at his omission from this thread.

As do I.

And yeah, I know it didn't scroll, but neither did Dizzy and he's there. I saw him.

WOW. This thread is awesome.

I love 2D sidescrollers. My love is infinite since i grew up with them. The first post almost made me shed a tear.

Oh and here's an underrated and unknown NES platformer of awesome:

only boring screens on the web though :(

2d side-scrollers live on with the Nintendo DS. The upcoming 'The Simpsons Game' on DS looks amazing! Here is a video:

http://gametrailers.com/player/21983.html

Plus with games like 'Contra 4' DS, the super amazing 'New Super Mario Bros.' and the 'Castlevania' DS games, Nintendo DS owners are currently experiencing some of the greatest 2d gaming ever created! :D

Typing here at the library since my pc passed away 2 weeks ago and here is thread worthy of logging in. I agree OP even with the DS the magic isnt quite there too often. I think part of it is the fact most go for some ugly 3D effect over more beautiful iconic sprites, some hook over solid fun gameplay. I dont feel like gaming too much anymore but I get a very strong feeling I would again if genres like this returned where games were more fantastical, fun, magical yet uncomplicated moving forms of art. Given the most fun I had this year was playing Legendary Axe and some old leisure suit larries I never beat the nostalgia excuse can not be used.

Maybe somewhere out there a group of brave men are reverse engineering Turbo 16 with the lastest techology and bringing back Legendary Axe, Keith Courage and hundreds of other wonders with abit of high rez holographic 2D. Well...yeah

Kabuki Quantam Fighter **** YEAH!
Yes, like 1% of everyone that I know that plays games knows about Kabuki Quantum Fighter :) What game where you attack with you hair isn't badass!

Major props out to Journey to Silius also, a hard, but freakin awesome game with fantastic music.

**** yeah a thread about real games for once.

Little Nemo Dream master is one of my favorites. and ristar is great. Batman was ****ing hard.

Such a phenomenal bunch of games. Reminds me how many I missed back in the day because I just couldn't afford them like Duck Tales, Kabuki, Goemon, Magical Turbo Hat Adventure, Mickey Mouse, Batman 2... the list goes on forever.
