why does taking off the rope give batman super jumping powers?? did the rope have kryptonite in it??
If I remember correctly the prison doctor tells Bruce that climbing without the rope meant that he would feel fear again, thus overcoming the pit. Er something like that.

I thought it was weird that the steps of the prison had handrails on them.

Also, the Bane/Batman dynamic reminded me of Rocky IV.

And the League of Shadows stuff always bugged me, even back in Batman Begins. Ra's said back to Bruce in his mansion that it was the League who went after the city, "economics", and they spearheaded the depression that took over Gotham. And now Bane has come into relatively peaceful Gotham and made it a shithole. So it's like...if you're the one who made the city corrupt in the first place, you really don't have much of a leg to stand on and complain, do you? You created this mess just so you'd have an excuse to get rid of it.

I think the whole Harvey Dent act and the conspiracy behind it was to show how corrupt the gov't was. Or at least that's the way Bane's speeches to the public seemed to be. Also, Talia wasn't completely motivated by just the league of shadows but her father's death as well. Although Talia/Bane didn't know about the whole conspiracy when they first initiated their plan so I'm not sure. It seemed based on Catwoman's experience and Bane's speeches that gov't officials and the wealthy were corrupt but she was also a bit jaded in that regard.

ha

why is Catwoman crying?

Pray tell, what the hell was Bane talking about? Because we have been given no back story about Bane at all to read into any kind of metaphors about his past.

And for crying out loud, all you metaphor-loonies are ignoring the fact that the dark literally, physically helped Bane in the fight. As soon as Batman turned off the lights, Bane kicked his ass even harder. Which suggests that he was talking about a literal darkness he spent his early childhood in.

Bane wasn't born the violent Bane. He became "Bane" in the pit after being attacked. In a sense, he was "reborn" in the darkness. DONE.

I think Gramr knows. He's just satirizing the people who are criticizing the movie for things it flat-out explains.

Now you talk like you're one of them. You're not! Even if you'd like to be. To them, you're just a movie geek, like me! They need you right now, to explain the so-called "plotholes" but when they don't, they'll cast you out, like a leper! You see, their rating system, their taste, it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of fancy 3D, CGI, explosions and boobs.
We are just ahead of the curve.

What is this I don't even.

I loved the film.

The only glaring thing that bothered me was the fact that after 5 months of being trapped underground the police officers looked too clean, it's like they were given shaving kits along with the food and water.

Now I understand the practical reasons, while working with hundreds of extras it's totally impractical to wait 5 months so all of them grow beards, so sacrifices have to be made.

One detail I really loved is the returning theme from the first movie, the theme of a false figurehead. In begins we are lead to believe that ken watanabe is ras al ghul and is killed the first 30 minutes. With this film I never saw the reveal with coutiard coming.

I'm pretty sure Bane said that he was born in the darkness and didn't see the light until he was a grown man. I thought it was a plot hole at first when I thought he was the child, but when they revealed the twist, it actually proved what he said to be correct. He likely was born in the prison and spent his entire life there. He empathized with Talia who underwent a similar experience and didn't want her to share the same fate.

Edit: Also, I think it's likely that the prison became much more hospitable after the LoS took over. It was far from a happy place to be, but the LoS has its own sense of nobility even it it's pretty twisted. Also, movies always make places lighter than they're supposed to really be so that the audience can actually see what's going on. The fight where Bane broke Batman didn't appear any darker than the prison that we saw.

Doesn't seem that hard to me, to be honest

For all we know there could've been a way to at least get small supplies in there. It would've been nice to see them come out with a least a LITTLE wear and tear, though.

There was a way. We see them sending a bunch of stuff down in a net. Also, didn't they set up camp in tents down there? Who is to say they didn't have shaving kits lol. The clean clothes though....

Bane's voice is definately dubbed over [in the prologue].

Not only does he express certain lines completely different in regards to the IMAX prologue in front of MI4, some sentences are different or have missing segments.

Bane in Prologue: "No one cared who I was until I put on the mask"
Bane in TDKR: "No one cared who I was 'till I put on the mask"

CIA agent: "If I pull that off, will you die?"
Prologue: "It would be extremely painful"
TDKR: "It would be EXTREMELY painful" [big emphasis on extremely]

CIA agent: "Was getting caught part of your plan?"
Prologue: "Of course" [normal, calm intonation]
TDKR: "Of course" [very weird intonation, deliberately highpitched voice]

Prologue: "Dr. Pavel refused our offer in favour of yours. We had to find out what he told you about us"
TDKR: "Dr. PAvel refused our offer in favour of yours. We had to find out what he told you"

So yeah, Nolan definately had Hardy re-dub parts of the movie, if not everything. Which explains the complaints from people about Bane's audio feeling like a voice over.

people are seriously discussing why the police wasn't rocking beards during the last act? nitpicking much?

"Mr. Blake, are you aware of Coleman Reese's book about the connection between Bruce Wayne and the Batman?"

yes

"And that all of the equipment used by the Batman has since been positively identified as Wayne Enterprises technology?"

uh huh

"And can you confirm to GNC that do you recall being a beneficiary in Mr. Wayne's will, and that witnesses saw you and Commissioner James Gordon leaving a ceremony commemorating Mr. Wayne?"

yeppers

"And that last night, a man wearing a similar outfit as the Batman foiled a major gangland deal? A man who matches your physical description, and that several police officers definitively identified as you, their former colleague."

i don't know where you're going with this

"Well, we've brought an orphan from the Wayne Home with us and-"

SHIT CHEESE IT ALFRED

We've hit rock bottom, DM. This thread cannot be saved. It must be allowed to die. Like Constantinople or Rome before it.

Alfred goes back to batcave, sees JGL fucking around with Batman outfits, smiles knowing that by he'll be dead before he has to guilt-trip him into not being Batman anymore.

Amazing analysis! This is why this thread exists. Agreed with everything above. Especially the point that Bane's take-over of the city should have happened earlier. Nolan should have sacrificed Modine, Dent Act, "Chase Batman!", etc subplots and maybe done some reshooting to condense the first act. I don't like how the first time we meet Bane in the city (after the prologue) it's in his own lair in the sewers. Should have been a scene in there where he does evil shit somewhere in Gotham to reemphesize that he's the bad guy and up to no good. And I always thought the motives why Batman comes back was really unclear - if the streets are so clean, why come back? Then again, I've only seen it once so I might have missed something.

Thanks for taking the time to read my essay! I know it was extremely long. Sort of like the movie!

I actually liked the sewer scene. I don't like that it led to Gordon being in bed for half the movie for no real reason, well besides that he is hurt and they wanted to set up a cool exchange between Gordon and Bruce dressed as Batman the very first time he met Gordon on the rooftops in BB. I think mainly they should have cut out JGL coming to rescue Gordon. It isn't entirely clear why Bane's men would go after Gordon all of sudden either. Its not like he can stop them. Its a cool scene but I would have removed it.

Another cool intro to Bane in Gotham would have been if he crashed the charity event in the beginning. But then that would be a completely different movie.

I actually think both the intros for Bane (plane sequence) and Catwoman (stealing necklace and interaction with Bruce) are brilliant, perfectly shot, and the accompanying music elevates them.

As for your question, Bruce sees 2 reasons to come back. First as Bruce he has to come back into the picture because his company is about to be taken over, there is no profit, and he sees how it really affects the causes he cares for (the orphanage).

Bruce also starts to wonder why Selina would want his fingerprints while pretending to be after the pearls. His Batman instinct and urge is kicking in. Then he hears about Gordon being hurt, goes to see him, and Gordon tells him about "this evil rises" from the sewers. That is all he needs to hear to realize this is no ordinary crime (the fingerprints) and that this Bane dude means trouble.

Strongly disagree though about the cop fight taking place in daylight - it gives the movie a different feel: it doesn't need to take place during the night because it wants to be a visually different movie. This is fine, I think.

Yeah its a really personal preference and I know some would prefer day time. I think in a movie like this when you have a guy dressed as a Bat and 1000s of extras, a lot of the goofy stuff which makes its way into the final cut gets hidden by the darkness of night.

My other preference would have been if the fight between Bane's army and the cops took place at a separate location then the batter between Batman and Bane. I would have liked it if it just them two alone on the steps of the building they were fighting on. More dramatic. The brawl of 1000s could have worked as background to the main fight. It still does but I think visually it might have worked better how I am imagining it. Again minor preferences.

That reminds me of that bit in this movie where Bruce takes off the cowl and talks to Alfred and his eye make up is gone. He looks fucking swagtastic in the suit without the cowl, but still funny.

The scene after he comes back from his first night out right?

There is some picture evidence of the scene from Batman Returns. Someone find it!

Was I the only one that got pumped in the theater when all of the cops were slowly walking towards Bane's men and the Bat appears and flys away? It was like a quick warcry and all of the cops got instantly pumped... I couldn't help but get pumped too.

Yeah, it was awesome. The shot of the cops all uniform against the thugs was great.

Definitely got pumped, can't believe some people didn't like it. I don't know what else people wanted the cops to do anyway, weren't they fighting in a dead-end street?

I got pumped whith the first Batman appearance, lights starting to go out, the music starts to sound louder, and bam, batpod appears, grin on the cop face, TV's showing the "batman is back" text.

So good...

This thread has made me understand why Nolan used flashbacks in the movie to explain references to previous movies. A lot of people must stop paying attention the second the movie starts.

Good thing you mentioned it. On 2nd watch the flashbacks were not as noticeable.

Of the top of my head there is one of Dent as he is about to kill Gordon's family. Ra's scene from BB about his wife and kid while Bruce is hallucinating about Ras Al Ghul in prison. Then one more where Gordon is putting the coat on a young Bruce.

3...were there more?

Thomas Wayne dropping down and picking Bruce up from the well.

It was definitely a narrow street. They looked like they could've been annihlated at any moment. I guess that's why I loved when they cheered and charged after the Bat came.

That too. I was like "Awwww here we go!". Definitely a great scene, IMO.

Agreed. And that plus the dialogue more than any visual or text telling us the passage of time failed to appropriately convey time. It moved too fast and only a few lines told us what was when.
